MOT Tips The only time you can drive your car when its MOT has expired if you’ve booked an MOT and are driving to the test centre. Although you still must have valid insurance.

If the police stop you on the way, you’ll have to be able to prove that you have an appointment.

If your car fails its MOT, you can only drive it if the previous year’s MOT is still valid unless it has been deemed ‘un-roadworthy’.

An MOT can be taken anytime within the 12 month period before the existing MOT expires.

Retesting should be free if the necessary repair work has been carried out and the re-test completed within 10 working days of the original MOT test.

If you’re found to have an invalid MOT certificate you could be fined up to £1000 and you could have the vehicle impounded.

For peace of mind you should also set up a MOT reminder to avoid missing your MOT expiry date (some garages can provide this service).

Avoid unnecessary mot fails on simple things by: Topping up your windscreen reservoir.

The Benefits of Reflexology Reflexology dates back to ancient Egypt and was also practised in India and China. It is a healing art therapy that eradicates stress, pain and congestion through the body by applying pressure and stretching techniques to the hands and feet. Areas of the body are thought to be found in certain points of the foot, for example, the spinal cord runs from the base of the big toe of the foot all the way down to the arch of the heel. Reflexology has many benefits both physiological and psychological such as: • Relieves muscle tension • Increased energy • Relieves fatigue • Strengthens self-healing mechanism, • Promotes a sense of calmness and wellbeing • Relaxes body and mind • Helps reduce stress • Soothes emotional distress It is fast becoming popular and sought after in many salons, hospitals and Holistic Wellbeing centres all over the world, and is recognised now by the medical profession as beneficial for cancer patients, during and after their treatment. Many people use Reflexology to maintain a healthy lifestyle and treat such conditions as: • Insomnia • Anxiety • Infertility • Irritable bowel syndrome • Depression.

Many ladies seek relief with pre-menstrual pain and find that this does indeed make a big difference, in order to fully get the maximum results for any such conditions mentioned above, it is recommended regular treatments to get the best results. I am very passionate about wellbeing and believe that we have to have a balance of both mind and body, and reflexology certainly does prove this, it can be used on men, women and children of any age - including babies. Proving to have a very positive effect on all. The effects of Reflexology can be long lasting. I have been having it myself for twenty five years and i find it is a very relaxing calming experience, bringing peace and tranquillity and soothing both body and mind, restoring balance to the whole person. Root, Leaf & Branch With Spring fast approaching we are all thinking about getting our gardens back into shape. Use our guide below to know the dos and don’ts of tree care. Overhanging Branches One of the most common problems is that of overhanging branches upon which advice is sought. There are no statutory controls applying to deciduous trees, (while those applying to evergreen are limited to high hedges), and in the absence of direct, proven damage from a neighbour’s tree there is little you can do to restrict its height or growth other than prune back overhanging branches to your boundary. This may be applied to tree roots, but it might prove unwise as severing structural roots, especially on your side of the tree, because you may cause it to become unstable and predisposed to fall towards your home. Tree Height There is no legislation relating to the height of trees, councils can do nothing to enforce a reduction in the height of a neighbour’s tall tree. Large trees statistically are very safe, with fewer than ten fatalities per year arising from them, therefore it is unlikely that you will encounter any harm from a tree just because it is tall. However non-one can predict how any structure, natural or man-made, will behave in extremes of climate.

10

Trees and Drains There is a myth that certain trees, especially the willow and poplar species, have a tendency to invade and damage drains in their search for water. In reality tree roots, of any species, will colonise drains opportunistically. Trees and Subsidence The most common problem usually occurs because there is an underlying layer of shrinkable clay soil on which the house rests. During excessively dry periods a large tree or trees may cause what is commonly known as “persistent moisture deficit” in this soil that causes it to shrink. When this happens some settlement of foundations may occur and usually presents itself as a pattern of diagonal cracking around right-angled fixtures such as door and window frames. Roots and Buildings Tree roots do not exert sufficient pressure to dislodge the footings of a house or other heavily-loaded structure. Occasionally they can damage lighter structures such as garden walls, and when this occurs there are sometimes solutions that will allow both tree and wall to co-exist, in general terms a tree root will not affect your house because the weight bearing down on the footings is too great. We advocate in all cases discussing your tree related problems with your neighbours first and always respect their property (that includes the tree) and if in doubt always consult a professional. TO SLEEP OR NOT TO SLEEP? Most people spend on average more than 2,500 hours in bed every year. With so much time spent under the duvet it really could pay off the ensure your mattress is right for you. Goldilocks Got it Right A bed that’s ‘too soft’ can sag, preventing the spine from properly aligning. One that’s ‘too hard’ tends only to support the heaviest parts of the body. Getting the firmness ‘just right’ promotes maximum support for the whole body allowing the muscles to relax and recharge themselves. This is particularly important for the spine during the deepest sleep referred to as R.E.M (Rapid Eye Movement) Sleep. This is when we dream, to stop us from acting out our dreams the spine relaxes and spinal support diminishes. So a bed that might feel supporting whilst awake could preform differently during R.E.M Sleep. A bed specialist can advise you on the best type of bed for to consider. Signs That it Could be Time to Replace Your Old Mattress • Waking feeling tired and achy • You’ve had your mattress for over 10 years (most beds have a life span of 5-10 years) • Your bed is sagging, has lumps or is just uneven

offering adequate support if your partner is tossing and turning) Talk to a bed specialist to ascertain which type of bed you should start to consider. When choosing a bed make sure you do the ‘rest test’ - lay on the bed in several positions then lay in your usual sleeping position for a few minutes to see if it feels right for you. Chicken Tikka Pasties Ingredients 100g plain flour 25g cold butter cold water 2 tablespoons cooked chopped chicke n 1 spring onion 1/ 2 tomato 2 tablespoons natural yoghurt 1 egg 1 teaspoon curr y powder

WHAT YOU’LL NEED

Try this delicious recipe... it’s so easy & makes the perfect lunch box or picnic snack. Can be enjoyed hot or cold.

20

2

AND HERE’S HOW TO MAKE THEM... 1 Pre-heat your oven to 180c. 2 Using fingertips rub the butter and flour together to resemble breadcrumbs. 3 Add enough water to make a dough and put to one side. 4 Chop the onion and tomato and mix with the chicken, curry powder and yoghurt. 5 Divide the pastry into two and on a floured surface roll into two circles.

20

6 Beat the egg and brush around the edges of the pastry. 7 Divide the chicken mixture between the two circles. 8 Using the egg as ‘glue’ bring up the sides, seal together and crimp (squash together). 9 Brush with the beaten egg. 10 Bake at 180º for approx. 20 minutes until golden brown.

Words by Robert Chapman

‘London Porter’ As we enter spring, I will be reviewing a porter from the Pitfield Brewery in Morton, near Ongar, Essex. Porter was invented in East London in the 18th Century. I was based on a type of beer called ‘Three Threads’ or ‘Entire’. The new beer became very popular with the porters at Spitalfields and Billingate markets - and so the beer became known as the ‘Porter’s beer’ or ‘Porter’. Strong beers were known as stout porters. Early in the 20th Century the word porter was dropped and stout became the word to describe dark beers. Pitfield Brewery started brewing its porter in 1986 and continues to this day. Happily, this style of beer is very popular once again. Porters are generally a bit lighter in body than stouts. The Pitfield 1850 London Porter is brewed with pale malt, smoked malt and dark malts with a 5.0% abv. As you would expect this is a black beer with chocolate and dark malt flavours and a lovely nose. It is brewed to an original Whitbread recipe from 1850 hence its name. In 2010 it won the Champion Bottled Beer of Britain Silver Award and the 2010 Champion Beer of the SIBA East Beer Competition. If you like the dark side of ales then this beer is well worth trying, it is available in bottles and through independent pubs in the South East. Try a pint for yourself at The Woodbine Inn

Words by Robert Bentley

Louis Latour Pinot Noir If you’re fed up with this cold wintry weather and yearning for a spot of Spring warmth, here’s a wine from the South of France which is akin to bottled sunshine! This Pinot Noir comes from the LanguedocRoussillon, France’s largest wine growing region, with production greater than the whole of Australia. As such, the quality of wines from this region can be rather patchy, but rest assured the Louis Latour brand conveys a genuine seal of approval. The Domaine de Valmoissine is located on the site of the ancient monastery and university of Valmoissine (at 500 meters above sea-level) in the Côteaux de Verdon, a visually stunning and historically rich region of France only 70 miles north of the holiday hot-spot of Saint Tropez. The vineyards are situated up in the mountains, not far from the magnificent gorges that the region is famous for.

“The grapes are entirely hand-picked before being fermented.”

These unique growing conditions mean that the grapes benefit from a slightly warmer climate but are also enriched by the longer, cooler night-time hour that give the wine its ultimate finesse. The grapes are entirely hand-picked before being fermented for a short period of 4-5 days. Excess colour and tannins are extracted prior to maturing in stainless steel vats for 10-12 months. This Pinot Noir is ruby-red in colour, with streaks of garnet. It features an intense nose of cherry and raspberry, and a taste of fine tannins and laced with notes of dried flowers. An ideal companion to grilled red meat, cheese, or fruit. For more deatils visit: www.foremostwineclub.com
