Patronage Bonus Announced Bayfront Branch Remodel Send Holiday Debt Packing

Federally insured by NCUA

MESSAGE FROM THE CEO

New Year, New Goals Moving forward in 2019!

With the holidays over, it’s time to look forward to the New Year, and as a member-owner of the Erie Federal Credit Union; you can look forward to a little extra in January 2019. As a result of another record year of growth in membership, loans and deposits, Erie FCU is pleased to declare a Patronage Bonus for 2018 in the amount of $600,000. Each year the credit union determines the income necessary to cover regular dividend and operating expenses, as well as increase capital to ensure our continued strength in the event of an economic downturn. Because of our members continued referrals and loyalty in choosing Erie FCU products and services, we are able to provide this benefit to you. Eligible members, in good standing on December 31, 2018, will receive their share of the declared Patronage Bonus in their primary savings account in January 2019. At Erie FCU, we strive to responsibly deliver financial solutions that meet the needs of our community and improve the way we do business based on input directly from our membership. At a time when for-profit institutions are making record income with the goal of returning profits to stockholders who most likely have no vested interest in the communities or customers they serve, not-for-profit organizations, such as Erie FCU, strive to return profits back to members in the form of lower fees, higher savings rates and lower loan rates. This distinct credit union difference assures members maximize their income and savings potential while at the same time benefitting our local communities.

“...Erie Federal Credit Union is pleased to declare a Patronage Bonus for 2018 in the amount of $600,000.”

The Patronage Bonus Program was developed to distribute an equitable bonus back to members based on their individual account relationship and usage of credit union products and services over the past calendar year. Erie FCU is the first financial institution in the area to give back to members through a Patronage Bonus Program. This means over the past two years, Erie FCU has been successful in returning more than $1.1 million dollars back to you, our membership. From all of us here, thank you for trusting Erie Federal Credit Union with your financial needs; we look forward to serving you and your family for many years to come! May you and yours have a safe and prosperous New Year,

Brian J. Waugaman

Bayfront Branch Remodel

Changing & growing to meet your needs Erie FCU will soon be starting an office remodel project at our location at 1005 Greengarden Road. The branch will be receiving much-needed attention both inside and out. Construction begins on January 7th and is expected to be completed in April, 2019. “We realized that after nearly 20 years, the Bayfront Office was in dire need of a refresh”, said Chief Operating Officer, Chris Cortes. “This is a great opportunity to provide a more convenient in-branch experience through a modernization of the facility. Our staff is very excited about the upcoming changes and looks forward to serving members from the remodeled office for years to come”. The branch will remain open with no interruptions of service during the construction. Some of the planned upgrades and time saving features: • Total refresh of the branch lobby • Relocation of our member waiting area • An improved member service desk • Renovation of Loan Officer offices • More Safe Deposit Boxes with an improved privacy/viewing area • Remodel of Remote Teller Stations • Removal and replacement of existing flooring • Improved exterior lighting To follow our progress, check for updates on our Facebook page and on our web site.

In the Community! Erie FCU CEO, Brian Waugaman, COO, Chris Cortes and Erie Mayor, “Santa” Joe Schember had the honor of lighting the star topper on the new Erie community Christmas tree at the annual Downtown D’Lights event in December.

We were very proud to sponsor this popular event!

Credit Union Ambassador Named

In November 2018, the Erie Chapter of Credit Unions held their annual Credit Union Ambassador contest. In order to replicate the state level contest, participants were tested on credit union knowledge, took part in a series of interviews with judges, and then presented a speech. Coming out on top was Erie FCU’s very own Mary Wagner who was selected the Erie Regional Credit Union Ambassador Representative for 2019! Mary, an Indirect Loan Officer, will now advance to the state competition where she will represent the Erie and Crawford County credit unions at the Pennsylvania Credit Union Association’s (PCUA) annual meeting in May 2019. Mary will compete against other credit union chapters in the state-wide competition for a chance to become the Pennsylvania Credit Union Ambassador Representative! Congratulations Mary! We are very proud of you. Best of luck!

6 Ways to Save More Money in the New Year 1. Budget Budgeting helps you organize your finances so you have money left over to save each month. It may seem laborious, but budgeting doesn’t have to be hard. Mobile apps cut a lot of the work and can help you track spending throughout the month.

2. Pay yourself first Firmly commit to making a savings deposit monthly, even if you can only afford a small amount. Do this before paying your other bills.

3. Automate If you’re not confident your resolution will stick or you want to simplify the process, automate your savings deposits. That way, a portion of your paycheck will automatically go to your savings account, or an amount you choose will be transferred from your checking to savings account each month.

4. Make your money work harder Compound interest is the interest paid on the interest your money earns in an account, and it allows your principal balance to grow faster. To fully benefit from compound interest, consider opening a high-yield savings account or a certificate of deposit that offers higher rates than the average savings account.

5. Plug up cash drains

Beginning January 1, 2019 show that pesky debt the door! Simply transfer your high interest credit card balances to an Erie FCU Platinum Mastercard® and save! Get a 2.99% balance transfer promotional annual percentage rate through December 31, 2019 on balances transferred January 1, 2019 - March 31, 2019. Plus, enjoy no annual fee and no balance transfer fees. Paying less interest and fewer fees is a smart way to send debt packing! Now with Apple and Samsung Pay! Don’t have a card? Apply today – Eriefcu.org. After December 31, 2019, remaining balances will accrue interest at the regular APR applicable to your account, which can range from 8.90% to 17.90% APR, based on your creditworthiness. Existing Erie FCU loans or credit card balances, purchases, cash advances, and Business Mastercard® accounts are not eligible for this offer. Loans subject to credit approval. Membership eligibility required.

It’s not always the big expenses that sabotage saving efforts; small expenses can add up and be a huge cash drain. • Shop around for the lowest possible rates on utilities, insurance, TV, internet and mobile plans. • Check bank account statements for less obvious fees such as those for account maintenance, ATM use or having a low balance. • Monitor daily spending and cut back on extras like lunches out, donut runs or fancy coffee. • Explore free and low-cost entertainment options, including parks, beaches and hiking trails, as well as local concerts, theater and sporting events.

6. Bring in extra bucks When trimming expenses doesn’t do the trick, the only way to create enough free cash for saving is to increase what’s coming in. You can: • Sell unwanted items online or at a yard sale. • Cash in credit or debit card reward points. • Take on an additional part-time job or turn your hobbies or skills into dollars.

The benefits of saving kick in very quickly and only get better with time. © Copyright 2018 NerdWallet, Inc. All Rights Reserved

Improve the Resale Value of Your Car

A message from Liberty Mutual Insurance - A Credit Union Partner We’ve all heard how a new car’s value depreciates the moment you drive off the lot. So, it may seem counterintuitive to think of your car as a financial investment. However, a little effort along the way can pay substantial dividends down the road. Here are simple things you can do to drive the value of your car up when it comes time to sell.

Buy Smart The time to start thinking about selling your car is before you even buy it. DMV.org suggests you do some online research to see which makes and models hold their value before you purchase a new car. You may even find that treating yourself to a nicer model is also a smarter move economically.

Awards & Recognition We love giving back to our communities in the Erie and Crawford Counties. And we certainly appreciate when our efforts are recognized and rewarded by others. Here are some of our awards, accolades and public recognitions from 2018: • Erie FCU was named the Erie Times News “Erie’s Choice in Credit Unions” 6th year in a row. • 2018 PCUA - “M.I.C. Award” - 1st place “It’s Who You Are” Award (CUs over $200M in assets) for our Team AOK (Acts of Kindness) company-wide community outreach initiative.

• For 2nd year in a row, the Pennsylvania Credit Union Association (PCUA) recognized Erie FCU with a Dora Maxwell award “honorable mention” for our #Team AOK community outreach initiative.

Park Smart If possible, park your car away from other cars to avoid door dings. If you must park near other cars, watch out for 2-door models with extra long doors. When possible, park in the shade to protect the material of your dashboard.

Keep a Clean Machine Dirt doesn’t just look bad – it can actually deteriorate your car faster. Clean your car inside and out regularly to help protect paint and fabric. Plus, who doesn’t love being behind the wheel of a just-washed car?

Stay Under Cover Seat covers are a relatively small investment that will keep your interior looking brand new – especially if you have pets or children. They’ll not only protect your seats from everyday wear and tear, they’ll shield them from sun damage. If your seats are already looking a bit worn, seat covers can help them look new again.

• Erie FCU voted “Erie’s Best Credit Union in Edinboro” by Edinboro Journal readers for the 3rd year in a row! • Erie FCU received a Preservation Erie, Greater Erie Award in the “adaptive re-use” category for our Glenwood Facility build.

Tax Time Is Here Luckily, help is too!

Keep Records

2018 Tax Filing Options - Income Based Tax Filing Assistance Available

Anyone can say they’ve taken good care of their car. Records provide proof, so be sure to save all receipts in a folder so you can present them to a prospective buyer. Carcare.org recommends that you maintain your car regularly, and take care of small problems before they become big problems. If you’re placing an ad for your car, be sure to mention recent work that’s been done.

The Erie FCU is proud to once again support Erie FREE Taxes, a no-fee program that helps anyone with low to moderate income to file their Federal, State, and Local taxes for free. This free service is available to members with household incomes of $55,000 or less.

What NOT to Do

Erie FCU Drop-Off service Glenwood Branch Office Community Room 3503 Peach Street February 5-April 9, 2019. Tuesdays only: 9-4:30 www.eriefcu.org/taxes

Avoid smoking in your car; the smell will likely be a deal breaker to a non-smoker. Eating in your car is not only unsafe, it causes stains and leaves crumbs in hard-toreach places. Finally, if you need to get your car painted, don’t get too creative. A color that’s hard on the eyes will certainly be a hard sell. Of course, a good auto insurance policy the most important protection of all. With Liberty Mutual Insurance, you can enjoy superior auto coverage and save money at the same time.

To learn more about Liberty Mutual Auto and Home Insurance or to get a free, no-obligation quote, call Adam Ruffner at 724-598-1531 or Kienan Owens at 724-202-2957. If you haven’t compared auto insurance rates lately, it’s a great time to take a look. Your credit union membership could result in some great savings. eriefcu.org

You must bring all your tax information, valid state ID, and social security cards for everyone, including children you will be claiming on your return.

MESSAGE FROM Getting Your Personal Finances in Shape for 2019

Now is a good time to assess where you stand and where you could be. It’s 2019! Use the new year to plan improvements to your finances. Start now and give yourself time to examine critical areas of your budget, your credit, and your investments. You could work on your emergency fund (or your rainy day fund). To clarify, an emergency fund is the money you store in reserve for unforeseen financial disruptions; a rainy day fund is money saved for costs you anticipate will occur. A strong emergency fund contains the equivalent of a few months of salary, maybe even more; a rainy day fund could contain as little as a few hundred dollars. Optionally, you could hold this money in a high-yield savings account. A little searching may lead to a variety of choices; it is not hard to find accounts offering 1.5% or more annual interest, as opposed to the common 0.1% or less. Remember that a high-yield savings account is intended as a place to park money; if you make regular deposits and withdrawals to and from it and treat it like a checking account, you may incur fees that diminish the savings progress you make.1

Your Financial Team

Review your credit score. Federal law entitles you to a free copy of your credit report at each of the three nationwide credit reporting firms (Equifax, TransUnion, and Experian) every 12 months. Now is as good a time as any to request these reports; visit annualcreditreport.com or call 1-877-322-8228 to order them. At the very least, you will learn your credit score. You may also detect errors and mistakes that might be harming your credit rating.2

Think about the way you are saving for major financial goals. Did your financial situation improve in 2018, to the extent that you could contribute a little more money to an IRA or a workplace retirement plan now? If you are not contributing enough at work to receive a matching contribution from your employer, maybe now you can. Also, consider the way your invested assets are held. What are your current and future allocations? Some people have heavy concentrations of equities in their workplace retirement plan, IRA, or brokerage account due to Wall Street’s long bull market. If this is true for you, there may be some pain when the next bear market begins. Check in on your portfolio while things are still bullish. Can you spend less in 2019? That might be a key to saving more and putting more money into your rainy day or emergency funds. If your pay has increased, your discretionary spending does not necessarily have to increase with it. See if you can find room in your budget to possibly cut an expense and redirect the money into savings or investments You may also want to set some near-term financial goals for yourself. Whether you want to accomplish in 2019 what you did not quite do in 2018, or further the positive financial trends underway in your life, now is the time to look forward and plan. Erie FCU Gives Back

Official Notice of Election of Directors Three-Year Term Commencing May 20, 2019 The Erie FCU Board of Directors consists of five directors who each serve a three-year term. The duties of a Director include: setting operational policies for personnel; reviewing investments; and ensuring guidelines for asset–liability management and federal regulatory compliance. A director must also be committed to the Credit Union Philosophy, understand Federal NCUA Regulations, and make competent policy decisions. Members in good standing who are interested in learning more about how the credit union operates may request to serve as a volunteer on the Supervisory Committee.

I have been a huge fan of the Erie FCU for about 40 years – I was a member when it was the Hammermill Credit Union. Everyone I have ever encountered at Erie FCU has been professional, helpful and caring. Today you showed me a whole other level of caring on the part of your employees (Sock-tober socks and gloves donation). You are a blessing to the homeless men in Erie and to St. Patrick’s Haven by helping us to continue our mission of serving homeless men in Erie. You have made a difference in the lives of those who really need help. Betsy W., Social Justice Coordinator

Requirements to hold the Office of Director: 1. Attend a full-day orientation session and meetings scheduled by the Chairperson. 2. Attend state, national and local meetings as required. 3. Attend specialized training sessions on Asset-Liability Management, Investment Polices, and other training as required by NCUA. 4. Successfully completing the Volunteer Achievement and Leadership Program administered by the Pennsylvania Credit Union Association. Nominated by Committee: James Lazan and Dennis Howard James Lazan, Board of Directors, has served the credit union for 26 years. Jim also served many years on the Supervisory Committee.

Dennis Howard, Board of Directors, has served the credit union for 3 years and previously served for 35 years on the 1st Choice Community FCU board.

Members interested in becoming a candidate for the Office of Director must be at least 18 years of age and a member in good standing. The petition process requires a candidate to obtain signatures from 1% of the primary Erie FCU membership and submit them by March 11, 2019. If there are nominations by petition, an election will be held by email or paper ballot. Petition and additional information can be obtained by contacting Susan King at 814-825-2436, opt.1, Ext 1037.
