STUDENTS MEET THE PM, THE SPEAKER AND AN INDEPENDENT IN CANBERRA

The Global Politics classes from Years 11 and 12 were given the incredible opportunity to embark on a two-day, “jam-packed” trip to Canberra on 22 and 23 February. We travelled to Parliament House where we spent the whole day exploring every aspect of it: from the House of Representatives to The Senate.

We were amazed - and shocked to say the least - when we sat in on Question Time which turned into “Yell at Malcolm Time”: nonetheless we enjoyed it. After that memorable experience, we were all so unbelievably excited (especially Mr Farrar and Ms Turner) because it was time to meet Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull. Of course we were a little star struck but we got the words out to ask him a few questions and take a happy snap before he waved goodbye, leaving us in awe.

After a tour we met The Speaker of the House, Tony Smith, and Independent Member for Indi, Cathy McGowan. Both gave us even more insight into Australian politics. The following day we visited the American Embassy which was not only a great opportunity to talk about the up-coming election but to also discuss foreign policy. The rest of our time was a whirlwind: from the War Memorial to Old Parliament House, from the Tent Embassy to the High Court. It was a rewarding day that gave us all the curiosity to learn more about our country. Everyone involved took the time to inform us and answer our eager questions. It really made our trip the sensation that it was, and for that we are incredibly grateful. Bridget Chadwick Year 11 Global Politics student
