What is Plant-Based Eating? Plant-based eating focuses on eating more plant-based foods (vegetables, fruits, whole grains, nuts, seeds, and legumes) and less animal products (red meat, poultry, fish, eggs and dairy).
Following a plant-based diet can reverse coronary artery disease and can reduce blood pressure, cholesterol, and hemoglobin A1c. People who follow a plant-based diet are less likely to develop hypertension, heart disease, type 2 diabetes, colon cancer, gastrointestinal cancer, and cancer overall.
Why Eat More Plant-Based Foods? Health Impact: Including more of these foods in your meals can treat, or even reverse certain chronic diseases. Research has shown that: â€˘ People who report eating more plants have a lower BMI, lower cholesterol, and lower fasting glucose than those who eat less plants.
Environmental Impact: Livestock production creates more greenhouse gases than all types of transportation, including cars, trains, planes, and trucks. • Animal foods use more natural resources than plant-based foods. In fact, livestock production uses 75% of the planet’s agricultural land. • Producing a ¼ pound beef burger uses as much water as filling 10 bathtubs, and uses enough energy to power an iPhone for 6 months. Animal Welfare Impact: Animals raised on factory farms are sometimes kept in small, confined spaces. How to Incorporate More Plant-Based Meals Incorporating more plant-based and whole foods in your meals doesn’t mean you have to become a “vegan” or completely remove all animal foods. Hurray!
