Tel: [+44} 74139 50605 COVER LETTER FOR ARCHITECTURAL ASSISTANT PART-II Email: ebenezer.han@gmail.com Dear Gensler Recruitment Team, I am writing to express my interest in joining Gensler as a part-II Architectural Assistant. I completed my MArch (ARB/RIBA Part-II) degree in Architecture with Merit at the Bartlett School of Architecture and gained significant experiences working in a London practice. I believe that Gensler would be the ideal firm for me to gain exposure to exciting and innovative projects. As a large, internationally-renowned practice encompassing different architecture related disciplines, I believe it is an excellent place and opportunity to learn and contribute my expertise. Part-I BArch and Part-II MArch Architecture courses have equipped me with well rounded skills for the visualisation and technical articulations of architecural design. Through constant evolution of my work at the Bartlett, I have constructed a firm foundation as a designer and gained solid understanding of multiple 3D modeling and CAD 2D drafting softwares. I became highly interested in community driven projects using film as a mean to communicate digital design. My part-I work at Andrew Paine Architecture gave me the opportunity to experience broad range of responsibilites involved within architecture. I learnt to efficiently draft 2D/3D drawings, and co-ordinated numerous presentations and also took part in consultant meetings whilst working on residential masterplans. These experiences helped me to execute any given tasks in a calm and pragmatic manner. After completing part-II studies, I gained valuable practical experience from APA, participating further in larger residential projects which varied from addressing the regeneration of Brixton, London to redesigning historic listed buildings such as Ireland House and Old Mill house which are 11 acres of listed buildings which date back to the 15th Century. My role at the studio forged me to be extemely efficient with 2D/3D drafting and rendering. I also developed a few design schedules that helped our team develop multiple design options quickly. I have been priveledged to work in detail and in close contact with clients and contractors seeing through all stages from feasibility, detail design, construction to hand-over.. Due to the scale of projects which I have so far been exposed to, my experiences has taught me to be diligent and considerate to detail and that the co-operation between designer to client is very important. However, I would like to be exposed to more international and commerical projects in which I believe I can contribute and also develop my skills as a designer. I believe Gensler is the ideal firm for me to learn and be a part of a team that works with a variety of mixed use to commercial and residential projects and maintains an intimate cooperation with clients at an international scale. I enjoy design challenges that integrate various spatial functions and form complexities to create comfortable and meaningful spaces. I admire how Gensler create projects that respect and understand the users, city context, their visions and cultures as well as the aesthetic balance between contemporary design and rational spatial qualities with an elegant touch of finish. I aspire to take part in projects of various types and sectors that Gensler delivers. Finally, I am a friendly, easy to approach person which will allow me to interact well with fellow colleagues and clients. People describe me as focused, hard-working and keen both at work and at school. With my qualifications and passions in our shared design ethos, I am confident that I have the qualities and ambition that you are looking for in a candidate as a leading practice. Thank you for your time and considerations, I look forward to hearing from you soon. The following pages include my CV and samples of my design work for your reference. Yours Sincerely,

Ezer Han

Andrew Paine Architecture as RIBA Pt. I Architectural Assistant

[RIBA stage 1-5, Construction] [Site Vist, consultation, 2D+3D Drafting, Detail Drawings, Rendering, Planning +BC submission package] The clients wanted to expand the house with a 2 storey rear extension and a single storey side extension, as well as internal modifications on both levels. The work was carried out in 4 phases. In phase 1, the rear extension. In phase 2, the single storey side extension. In phase 3 proposed alterations to the garage space. Phase 4 is the loft conversion.

Burnley Road // London, UK / Residential

Andrew Paine Architecture as RIBA Pt. I Architectural Assistant

[RIBA stage 3-6, Construction] [Site Vist, consultation, 2D+3D Drafting, Detail Drawings, Rendering, Planning +BC submission package]

The clients wanted a rear extension for the addition of a private library to their home, they also required internal alterations to the ground floor. The client also requested bespoke design of the shelves and other furniture to match the library design.

04

Alfarthing Lane // London, UK / Residential

Andrew Paine Architecture as RIBA Pt. I Architectural Assistant

[RIBA stage 1-6, Construction] [Site Vist, consultation, 2D+3D Drafting, Detail Drawings, Rendering, Planning +BC submission package] The client wanted a full loft conversion, and various other internal alterations. Extending the roof to create an inhabitable loft conversion has the potential to add either one or two bedrooms to the house as well as a bathroom or shower room. The second floor loft extension will require planning permission and represents the biggest risk to the project as it will require negotiation with Wandsworth Council.

05

Regent Road // London, UK / Residential

Andrew Paine Architecture as RIBA Pt. I Architectural Assistant

[RIBA stage 1-5, Construction] [Site Vist, consultation, 2D+3D Drafting, Detail Drawings, Rendering, Planning +BC submission package] The existing building is a Victorian terraced house of brick construction with a relatively common existing configuration including a pitched roof. The clients wanted a full loft conversion, rear extension and various other internal inspriratins. Extending the roof to create an inhabitable loft conversion has the potential to add either one or two bedrooms to the house as well as a bathroom or shower room. The second floor loft extension will require planning permission and represents the biggest risk to the project as it will require negotiation with Lambeth Council. The addition of a first floor rear extension has the potential to add either an additional bedroom or bathroom. This would require an extension that is a Permitted Development as it would have a volume of less than 40 cubic metres.

New Homes for Neighbourhoods // Brighton, UK / Competition Andrew Paine Architecture as RIBA Pt. I Architectural Assistant

[Site Vist, 2D+3D Drafting, Detail Drawings, Rendering] The Brighton Boot is a new flexible housing typology desgined to respond to restricted sites within Brighton. The ‘boot’ form presents a simple, flexible and affordable geometry that can adapt to site specific issues such as overlooking across, solar orientation and tenure. The materiality of the project responds to both the marine environment of Brighton and the building materials used in the local area. A light brick ‘lining’ clads the front and rear elevations of the building with a black rubber ‘skin’ that wraps around, frames and protects the lining as well as shading the southern facades. The rubber cladding uses EPDM (ethylene propylene diene monmer) rubber waterproofing, which is ideal for a marine envrionment. It is a natural material that can withstand extreme temperatures, has no fire risk, and absorbs the impact of the wind and rain as well as providing a striking visual contrast to the light brick.

07

Network Rail Footbridge // UK / Competition

Andrew Paine Architecture as RIBA Pt. I Architectural Assistant

[Concept Design, 2D+3D Drafting, Detail Drawings, Rendering] From experience with the transport sector (Crossrail 2), I identified the importance of ease and speed of construction and maintenance, planning for end-of-life recycling or re-use and, where possible, to allow these to take place without the need to suspend rail traffic for extended periods. While this in no way reduces the importance of a highquality outcomes for the user, design innovation and cost-effectiveness, our submission focusses on making these possible while allowing the railway to continue to operate smoothly throughout the lifespan of the structure.

The Korean Reunification : The Architecture of Nostalgia, Transition and Unity. UNIT 26 | BARTLETT | MArch YEAR 5

This project explores approaches for a socially sustainable Korean reunification. Behavioral responses to space is interpreted differently by North and South Koreans, and this differing way of engagement to their spatial context is a reflection of the way their lives and opinions are accustomed to the conduct of their society. The reunification center accommodates the first reunification stages of the divided families. The building will facilitate the reconnecting and familiarisation of similarity of the two people groups and the programmes within the centre will give a gradual adjusting environment to one another’s culture- to build up compassion and anticipation for the future. The reunification centre is the first of many steps towards the reunified Korean city of Gaeseong. The community will grow, and this movement will spread through city by city until it is at a national level.

The [EU]Logy of Great Britain UNIT 26 | BARTLETT | MArch YEAR 4

This project is a memorial museum based on the decline of the second British Empire [1815-2016]. Artefacts, paintings, films and records of the great feats, accomplishments and also unfortunate events that built the identity of ‘britishness’ will be exhibited with the intention to inform and create nostalgia for the lost identity for the post-brexit visitors. The building will integrate several spaces in ‘jenga’ like vertical composition to create a divide of negative voids that create confusion within the circulation. There are 4 different routes that will lead the users into endless combinations of journeys throughout the building. This is to allow each visitor to experience and absorb a unique perspective of British identity. There will be exhibition spaces both ephemeral and constant and a clear segregation of public and private spaces within this vertical maze like building.
