STARTING POINT Newsletter Number 18 Double Scoop for FMC at Barking & Dagenham Business Awards! Former Starting Point group, Future MOLDS Communities (FMC), are the proud winners of two Barking & Dagenham Business Awards. The group picked up the award for Community Involvement and Social Enterprise and for Supporting Education, Training & Development. During their time at Starting Point, FMC developed their organisation to deliver youth and community projects, providing social and inclusive activities for young people and their communities. FMC use informal education methods to increase opportunities. They are dedicated to supporting existing projects to maximise the young people’s potential within their communities whilst promoting and developing community cohesion.

After completing the 18 month Starting Point programme in December 2011 FMC secured an office in the new Barking Enterprise Centre. Since then they have supported many young people including residents in East Thames’ Barking Foyer. Please join us in congratulating FMC, on their awadrd wins, they have worked really hard and we’re very proud of them! Starting Point looks forward to working alongside FMC in the future to support our community. New Administrator for Starting Point! We are delighted to welcome Gavin Charles to the Starting Point team! Gavin joined us in August having previously worked in the Customer Contact Centre at East Thames. He has a very customer focussed background and is excited to be joining the Barking & Dagenham voluntary sector. Community First Programme- Abbey Ward We are delighted to announce that several Starting Point groups have been successful in securing a grant through the Community Development Fund. The grants were available to groups delivering services in Abbey Ward which meet one of the ward’s three priorities: • • •

Bringing different communities together Activities for young people Pre-school support & parenting support, particularly to young parents

Many applications were considered but we are pleased to announce that Starting Point groups were awarded 75% of the available funding. One of the successful bids for funding came from two groups who have collaborated to provide a healthy eating pre-school club called Mini Kidz based in the heart of Abbey Ward. Please look out for information around all the projects being delivered on our website news page.

Virgin Money Giving Virgin Money Giving is a really useful website to assist you in fundraising. It’s quick and easy for people to make a donation to your community organisation/charity and it’s also great for one-off fundraising events. It takes around 10 minutes to set up your page and you can then post a link to your page on any social networking site such as facebook or twitter. Donators can access your page easily and safely give money to your

organisation in minutes using their credit or debit card. There is also the option for tax payers to ‘gift aid’ their donation. This means the charity/ organisation can reclaim basic rate tax on your gift, adding 20% to the value of your donation. Kids World out of school club provides a high quality child service to working and studying parents in the London borough of Barking and Dagenham and its neighbouring boroughs.
