I call architecture frozen music. - Johann Wolfgang von Goethe

Architecture is that rare evolutionary discipline that allows an architect to conceive reality according to his / her unique vision. Essentially, architecture can be regarded as a time capsule that encompasses human ingenuity and allows students the freedom to draw on multiple influences to realize their vision. At the core are the entire spectrum of experiences architects share – familiar, yet unique vocabularies, values and beliefs, all of which are further synthesized through the pursuance of their craft. Architecture has to address some of the most difficult questions that we face today, yet we can safely rely on human ingenuity and man’s penchant for storytelling for guidance and inspiration. Our inspiration stems from various sources in the living, breathing world around us, which in turn has inspired our most creative constructions. Here in the 21st century, space is a luxury that is becoming harder to afford. Buildings that that walk the fine line between beauty and practicality and are a natural extension of the environment around it are the ones that stand the test of time. We believe that architecture should be limitless and without boundaries. Form and function are one. Light is the most important consideration; each construction must illuminate and remain illuminated. Minimalism is often underrated. The fewer words you say it in, the better. Inspiration is in everything around you, hiding just out of sight, waiting to be discovered. All one has to do is look. Using this portfolio, we will attempt to weave an architectural narrative, exhibiting some of our on going projects. Architect Shashank Shahabadi EASTSIDE OFFICE Email: mail@eastsideoffice.in

Overlooking Independence Square and in the distant azure waters of the Indian Ocean, the Colombo Aureole soars above the bustling capital of Colombo. Inspired by the blue water lily, the national flower of Sri Lanka, the Colombo Aureole opens its petals wide to the tropical sun. Reflecting its muse, the edifice serves multiple purposes, such as, a top-of-the-line shopping mall, mega luxury apartments with a five-star hotel and state-of-the-art offices. The base of this superstructure tapers elegantly to avoid the direct glare of the sun, instead allowing the ingeniously-constructed petal segments to reflect the light in all their mirrored glory. The verdant gardens in the rear, further emphasize the union of the lush valleys, virgin beaches of the land and the diverse and multicultural population. Graceful and compelling, the Colombo Aureole stands as a proud icon of the heralding the birth of a new Sri Lanka.

The aim of this Design Exercise, was to design a compact shopping arcade in a fairly-restricted urban space in Udupi City, by adhering to local bylaws. The overarching purpose was to provide citizens with a one-stop address for recreation, shopping and entertainment. The final super-structure was achieved by juxtaposing solid geometrical shapes in such a manner that allowed for bright interiors and optimal usage of space. The unconventional geometrical shape gave rise to interesting and spacious, yet congenial interiors, which allowed shoppers to shop and socialize with ease. Exits, elevators and stairs were also placed in such a manner so as to facilitate the easy movement of human traffic within the mall.

TREEHOUSE

Competition Project

The aim of the Design Exercise was to construct a Tree House which would be ecologically-sustainable, energy-efficient and structurally-viable. The construction serves as leisurely retreat. We worked on a flexible design, which was portable and could be assembled and dismantled easily. With the rapid depletion of forest cover, we were opposed to the idea of using wood as a construction material. Instead, we looked for a more sustainable and flexible material. Coastal India experiences tropical weather, therefore we had to construct a sturdy and sustainable arboreal tree house that could withstand the elements and also provide comfort.

Keeping the above factors in mind, the concept of the design was inspired by the shape and form of a cocoon. The cocoon is one of those few naturally-occurring, selfsustainable structures that last until the entire metamorphosis process is complete. Like a cocoon, the structure is comprised of flexible PVC rods, held in place by a light-weight aluminum frame. Bamboo is used for the flooring and the outer membrane is composed of polyester fabric, which forms the skin of the shell. This ensures that inmates are provided a safe and comfortable living environment. Additionally, the portability makes it a true “getaway residence.

The aim of this exercise was to develop an appropriate design for an 82.87 Acre site which is 1.1 kms away from the Nation Highway, NH17, which passes through Udupi. We were given the liberty to design the entire site. Based on the location parameters, we had to come up with an appropriate design which could address the growing population needs and attract investment which would inevitably lead to the region’s economic resurgence.

SIT E LO CAT IO N Development Restriction of The Land

central road -20 meters wide

Taking all the necessary factors into account we decided to design, an IT SEZ zone, which will be the 1st dedicated IT park in the district. Due to locational advantages and its proximity to the nearest city, Mangalore, we believe that this will be enhance the profile and the economic well being of the region. As Udupi is home to the famous Manipal University, an IT Park would serve as a appropriate recruitment and employment center, comfortably housing almost 35,000 people.

SITE PLAN

The SEZ zone is located on the extreme western side of the site, which is closest to NH-17. The IT Park is built around the central signature tower, which is the tallest building on the site. The central ring road has four main roads which act as entry and exit routes. These main roads are connected by a series of peripheral roads. A lot of open space is provided on on the south eastern part of the site. A park divides the space between the mall and the convention center. The site is self-sufficient with considerable open green spaces. A water retention basin has also been created to recycle water and use it for landscaping. The entire site is exquisitely landscaped and people live and work in this congenial environment.

The site is located in Jankia dist. khordha,42 Kms from Bhubaneswar city. The natural landscape is bordered by hills in the interior and has a stream flowing near the outer periphery of the site.

The proposed farm house development project is intended to be a super luxury retreat possessing all entertainment and leisure amenities such as fully equipped golf course with a neighbouring club house. this will be developed on a 500 acres of flat land which has o be designed using artificial springs and fountains. The project will have 70 residential plots of 2 acre each.
