... spring 2013 There’s a great sense of out and about-ness running right through the Eastgate’s spring programme. Landscape Theatre’s Secrets, Trees and Stars is based on one woman’s exploration of the Borders landscape, from tiny flowers to big skies. In Rowan Tree Theatre Company’s double-bill of new writing From Script to Stage the ‘debatable lands’ also provide an atmospheric backdrop to two contrasting tales of modern life. Meanwhile the Spanish sierras are the setting for Mike Maran’s charming new show, Platero – Travels with a Donkey. Musically the mix is just as wideranging, counterpointing homegrown Scottish talent with some exciting bands from much further afield. The Henry Girls enrich their own Irish tradition with a generous dash of Americana. Genticorum bring an inimitable concoction of French Canadian tunes and rhythms. And Budapest Café Orchestra (who may not be entirely Hungarian!) return with the most eclectic selection of European sounds that you could imagine. Familiar fare or far horizons – the choice is yours.

Nabucco

La Donna del Lago

Auditorium

Auditorium

Auditorium

A masterwork containing some of the greatest choral music, wonderful arias and ensembles.

A masterpiece set in the Scottish Highlands. Based on The Lady of the Lake by Sir Walter Scott, this is the most fully romantic of Rossini’s Italian operas with expansive ensembles and shimmering orchestration.

Britten’s portrait of the public and private faces of Elizabeth I is a brilliant depiction of the Tudor court and the tension between affairs of state and affairs of the heart, the public image of the Virgin Queen and her seething personal feelings.

Domingo takes another thrilling step into the baritone repertory, following his triumphs as Simon Boccanegra, as he sings the title role of Nabucco for the first time. Acclaimed director Daniele Abbado makes his Royal Opera debut with this co-production with La Scala, Milan.

John Fulljames’ staging provides an insight into this rich but under-explored seam of operatic gold. Featuring three of the leading bel canto voices of our time (Juan Diego Flórez, Joyce DiDonato and Colin Lee) La Donna del Lago promises to be a musical revelation.

Verdi’s rich score does full justice to the opera’s epic themes of nationhood, faith, love and redemption and calls upon the full might of the Orchestra of the Royal Opera House and the Royal Opera Chorus.

Mon 27 May 6.45pm

Award-winning Richard Jones directs a Gloriana for our time, in a setting that re-creates the excitement of our own Queen’s Coronation year. Starring Susan Bullock as Queen Elizabeth I, this is a unique tribute both to the nation’s monarch and to its greatest opera composer.

Four Farces

Platero. Travels with a Donkey

Duelling pistols, mistaken identity, double-crossing, intoxication, cross dressing, romance and a shot in the dark…just some of the ingredients of these four uproarious one act comedies.

Spend a year in the timeless Andalusian landscape of sunny southern Spain with a poet and his constant companion, a little silver donkey called Platero.

European Arts Company is now in its tenth year, touring the UK and internationally. These four farces will be performed in its usual breathlessly imaginative, inventive style. This promises to be a night of raucous laughter and great fun.

“European Arts Company really takes the audience by storm. A surreal performance, witty and hilarious, full of energy, talent and creativity” Culture Guide

Master storyteller Mike Maran, internationally renowned director Levan Tsuladze and puppeteer Nino Namitcheishvili create a beautiful adaptation of Juan Ramon Jimenez’s stories, accompanied by a new score from Craig Ogden.

“A joy to watch... this is storytelling at its finest” “Stunning... incredible attention to detail”`

This fresh, new production of Puccinin’s Madame Butterfly is set in modern day Japan. This tale of love, sacrifice and heartbreak promises to be a memorable night for opera lovers and newcomers alike.

What does growing older in Scotland looks and feel like today? This multi media production, with film and music, is inspired by stories gathered from theatre based projects with older people. It illuminates aspects of older people’s lives that society often ignores. Your partner rips your clothes off at 20 and at 78. Same action, different meaning. A neighbour shakes a woman’s hand – the first time anyone has touched her in 19 years since her husband died.

Opera Bohemia has built its reputation for exciting and high energy productions by engaging young performers to create such critically acclaimed touring operas as La Bohème and Lucia di Lammermoor.

Refunds Refunds are not given except in the event of a show cancellation. Tickets may be exchanged or transferred at the discretion of the Box Office Manager. We may be able to resell your tickets but only after our own stock has sold out, and we cannot guarantee that your tickets will be resold. Data protection We keep all customer details confidential and we never share them with or sell them to anyone else. If your details have changed, please let us know. Special effects If we know that a show contains special effects we will mention it on the event page; but sometimes we'll only be able to warn you on the night, so look out for signs in the foyer. Latecomers Latecomers can be admitted to most music shows and some other performances. If you're late, we'll guide you to the back of the auditorium so that the performers and audience aren't disturbed, and you'll be able to move to your chosen seats during the interval (if applicable). If you’re late for an event that doesn't admit latecomers, you will have to wait for an interval before we can let you in.

for more information visit www.eastgatearts.com

Accessibility We provide level access, adapted toilet facilities and a passenger lift. Wheelchair spaces are available on the front row of the auditorium (please book in advance through Box Office). Babies/young children There are baby-changing facilities in the Disabled Toilet, and there are high chairs available for your baby/toddler to use in the café. All children require their own ticket at the prices advertised. Babes-in-Arms (under 2 years) are free but still require a ticket due to fire regulations – please ask at box office. Accompanying adults will be asked to remove any noisy children from the auditorium out of consideration for other customers. Guide dogs Guide dogs are very welcome. If you have a guide dog, you may wish to sit in the front row so that your dog has room to be comfortable. Please mention when booking your seats. Alterations to programme We do our best to make sure that all the information in this brochure is correct at the time we go to press. However, sometimes circumstances beyond our control mean that prices or line-ups might change; and we reserve the right to be human and make the odd mistake.
