Open Galleries Evening This year’s festival is launched by galleries, studios, workshops and all sorts of other venues, including shops, opening especially in the evening to showcase the extraordinary wealth of visual arts and crafts created in and around Peebles. From commercial galleries to a fish shop, from a home to a bustling hotel, expect to find original art work to suit every budget…and some very special treats. Each of the open galleries venues is marked on the map on the centre pages, the page at the back of the map has a more detailed listing of each venue. 6.30 – 9pm FREE Many of the galleries and shops are open during the day for most of the Creative Peebles Festival; studios and other venues may only be open at the weekend. Blast in the Park Neidpath Pirates are a motley crew, and somehow got stuck in Peebles on their way to Ocean Blue. Can you help them defend their ship against the mischievous River Rascals and heave up their anchor from Dangerous Depths? Even More Secret Peebles Join photographer and writer Liz Hanson for a fascinating new tour of some of the town’s less well known streets, squares and closes –identifying the places that embody the history of Peebles from medieval settlement to a thriving 21st century country town. Philip Hutton, Loretta Whitcomb and Tony Lawrence discuss all sorts of things in poetry and prose. Their writing covers everything… from whether you can send bees by post, how to make an emergency stretcher and why the cormorant is known as the ventriloquist bird… with style, wit, and a touch of the surreal. The Wednesdays and Carlops Jazz Band The sixteen women of The Wednesdays Choir perform all around the Scottish Borders, singing hits by performers including Coldplay, Adele, Aretha Franklin and Dolly Parton. For this performance they have joined forces with The Carlops Jazz Band renowned for their big band treatment of songs including Be My Baby, Happy Together and Moon River. The choir and the band will each play a short set of their own material then get together to play a selection of songs and fill the theatre with music. Eastgate Auditorium 7.30pm £12, £6 under 15

Sunday 26 August

Simply Samba workshop and parade with Mark Cameron Come along to this samba sensation workshop. Once you’ve learnt your samba steps and put on you samba-style headdress, you’ll be ready to sashay onto the streets of Peebles and show everyone your new moves. River Tweed Ramblings Join the Friends of the Eastgate for a leisurely afternoon stroll along the banks of the Tweed. There will be some historical facts; a bit of poetry; pieces of prose; maybe some song – all designed to heighten your appreciation of the beauty of this magnificent river flowing through the town. This will be a leisurely walk, with plenty of stops to enjoy the scenery. Meet in Eastgate Café 2 – 4pm £8 A BUILDING ON SUCCESS fundraising event for the Eastgate Development Project.


The Border Shepherd A celebration in song and story of the work of the shepherd – a way of life that still follows a centuries-old tradition, despite the advent of quad bikes and new breeds of sheep. Fisher Lassies repertoire spans songs about shepherds, sheep and wool, some collected in the Borders, others from further afield. Eastgate Studio 2.30pm £8

A Way with Wool Audience members are invited to go one step further in discovering the importance of sheep in the Borders – be staying on for a hands-on opportunity to try the traditional processes of carding, spinning and woolcraft with locallyproduced wools under the guidance of local shepherd, and Fisher Lassie, Dorothy Thomson. Take to the Floor The Eastgate Theatre and Peebles Hydro have joined forces to create a spectacular new dance celebration incorporating a strictly style competition. The evening will feature performances by professional and community dance groups, as well as a dance competition for couples who will perform for a live audience and in front of a panel of judges. Music will be performed live by Swing Loaded, the very cool big band from Peebles High School. Northern Lights A thought-provoking workshop for drama lovers and play readers who would like to explore some of the characters and concepts presented in two seminal Scandinavian plays – Ibsen’s Hedda Gabler and Miss Julie by Strindberg. Writer and director Clare Prenton will provide synopses and scenes on the day, but do read ahead if you have a copy of either play. Eastgate Studio 10am – 12 noon FREE

Playing with Words Join local writer and teacher, Kath Mansfield, for a playful writer's workshop. Share work and enjoy the creative process free of expectations and judgement. Take time to look at Dorothy Alexander's Found Poetry system, then join in a prose session (using chance and a dice) before playing with language for effective descriptions. Generations of Growth Come and hear the story of these magical gardens in the company of Lady Angela Buchan-Hepburn, owner of Kailzie Estate, and Guy Crowhurst, head gardener for almost 35 years. Your guides will reveal all about the planting of the different areas at Kailzie – from the wild garden to the magnificent walled garden and greenhouses – as well as the fascinating social history of the estate. Totally Plastered Again Visit this gem of a museum, housed in the busy plaster workshop which has been operating for more than 125 years. It is full of intricate pieces from 7ft long friezes to the plaster miniature of the Elgin marbles. Life, Love and Loss – Tales from Neidpath Castle Owned down the ages by three powerful Scottish families – Fraser, Hay and Douglas – Neidpath Castle provides a fascinating look at life inside a 14th Century Scottish tower house. Come and join the current owners for a rich and varied tour of this famous Peebles landmark. The views from the rooftops are worth the visit alone. Meet at Neidpath Castle 2 – 4pm £8

Spinning and Weaving Dreams (1) Fiona Potter leads a workshop in creative off-the-wall knitting, looking at how to create garments with interesting textures, working with cashmere, silk and exotic hand-spun yarns. Equipment supplied; booking essential School Brae Studio 6.30 – 8.30pm £45


John Buchan and the First Nations of Canada A talk to illustrate John Buchan’s links with the Canadian First Nations tribes. As Governor General of Canada, Buchan toured extensively meeting the indigenous peoples and, on one occasion, was presented with a magnificent eagle feather headdress. Come and hear about Buchan’s links with the Blood Tribe and others stories, including excerpts from his novel Sick Heart River. The John Buchan Story Museum, Chambers Institution 7pm £8 (includes refreshments)


Understanding Cancer In the annual Festival Lecture Prof. David Cameron, Clinical Director of Cancer Research UK in Edinburgh, outlines the research helping us to understand, control, cure and eliminate cancer in its many forms. Explore the ritual, danger and absolute beauty of fireworks in this stunning documentary, made by the creators of Beasts of the Southern Wild. The National Pyrotechnics Festival is a ten-day celebration that sees huge papier-mâché structures adorned with exploding fireworks parade the streets of Tultepec, Mexico. Exploring the Page with Felicity Bristow Take a series of short structured walks in the studio, reflecting on the space you are in and the steps you take. Take these reflections into the making of a pamphlet stitch book recording your movement and mapping your experience of the space by simple mark making, stitch and collage. INCHORUS present

Choir-aoke Sit back and immerse yourself in the good vibes of the choir performing in the first half. Then, after the interval, rinse those vocal cords and experience for yourself the fun of group singing. Lyrics and encouragement will be supplied. Dutch courage and hairbrushes are entirely optional. This concert is the culmination of InChorus’ tenth birthday celebrations. Ghosts, Ghouls and Rats – Tales from the Castle Crypt Fascinated by dungeons? Love tales of ghosts and ghouls? Always wanted to see a dessicated rat? Then come and learn all about the horrible history of Neidpath Castle – a 600-year-old tower house built overlooking the Tweed on the edge of Peebles. Age 8+ Meet at Neidpath Castle 2 – 4pm £8

The End of the Line It’s more than half a century since the last trains ran through Peebles – operated variously by Peebles Railway, North British Railway and Caledonian Railway. Fifty years later, there are still many remnants of buildings, signs and place names that bear witness to the town’s age of steam. Stuart Akers is the guide for this nostalgic tour around Peebles’ railway heritage. Meet in Eastgate Café 2 – 4pm £8

Beyond Witch Wood A guided walk in the Dawyck and Dreva area, around some of the places that John Buchan used as inspiration for his atmospheric novels Witch Wood and John Burnet of Barns. The two hour walk will incorporate a few stops to appreciate Buchan’s writing, his descriptions of people, places and the landscape. Meet at Dawyck Botanic Garden car park. Peebles Horticultural Society Annual Flower Show

Peebles harpist, singer-songwriter and composer Esther Swift is joined by four of Scotland’s finest young string players. Together they play the world premiere of Saturday 25 August Esther's latest composition, jointly commissioned by Music in Peebles and Enterprise Music Scotland. The music is accompanied by a film specially created Traquair House, Traquair, by Tom Swift. Innerleithen EH44 6PW The Brodick Quartet go on to play a Saturday 25 and selection of Nordic folk tunes arranged Sunday 26 August by the Danish String Quartet. Wee Movers with Alex Saunders This class offers parents and carers a chance to dance with their wee movers. Using creative movements, props, rhythm and song, it encourages movement development, balance and coordination.
