Q

Your Questions Answered We realise that going to college can be a big step, and naturally you’ll have lots of questions, which we’re happy to answer. Here are a few of the most frequently asked... Will I have to pay? Depending on your circumstances some of the College’s courses are free (whether or not you are receiving benefits). If you have to pay any fees, in some circumstances arrangements can be made for you to pay by instalments to help spread the cost. However, your instalment plan must be paid in full before you complete the course. If you are unemployed some benefits will qualify you for a reduction of fees. Please check our website for the list of benefits and the required evidence needed at enrolment. For those on low incomes we may also be able to assist with other fees for your course. Proof of benefit must be seen at the time of enrolment, you cannot be enrolled without it. In exceptional circumstances the College will provisionally accept you on to your chosen course pending proof of benefit, if no proof is seen within 2 weeks we will cancel your application. If the course you are interested in is a Level 2 or Level 3 you MAY NOT have to pay the tuition fee if: The course is a full Level 2 and you are over 19 but under 24 and haven’t already got a full Level 2 qualification, such as 5 GCSEs grade C or above or an NVQ Level 2. The course is a full Level 3 and you are over 19 but under 24 at the start of your course and do not already have a full Level 3 qualification, such as 2 or more A Levels or an NVQ Level 3.

Will my benefits be affected if I come to college? If you are unsure please contact your local Benefit Office. The rules on studying are very complicated and there may be a limit on the number of hours you will be able to do. I’m 18, can I study free? For students under 19 on 31st August 2017, no course or examination fees are payable. Does not apply to College Certificate courses. Can I get help with costs? If you feel you need help with costs, the College has some funds available to help. The funds are limited, so we may not be able to cover all costs requested. Information is available from Student Services. Funding is means tested so we will need to see proof of your income.

A

What is the Advanced Learner Loan? It’s a bit like the loans available to university students. If you are aged 19 or over you could apply for a Advanced Learner Loan to cover the cost of certain courses at Level 3 or higher. Loan repayment will only start once you have finished your qualification and are earning more than £21,000 a year. And even better news, for students who study on the Access to Higher Education programme, is that Student Finance England will ‘write off’ any outstanding Advanced Learner Loans you owe for an Access to HE course once you complete a higher education course. This means you don’t have to repay it.

FREE GYM MEMBERSHIP Worth over £450 per year

All EDC students, full time and part time, get free membership to our stateof-the-art fitness gym. This membership includes the class pass package, giving you free access to a range of fitness classes while you are a student at the College.
