Clinical Externship (classroom learning and online learning available) This program will train students to assist physicians by performing functions related to the clinical responsibilities of a medical office. Instruction includes preparing patients for examination and treatment, routine laboratory procedures, diagnostic testing, technical aspects of phlebotomy and the cardiac life cycle. Students will review phlebotomy, pharmacology, the proper use and administration of medications, taking and documenting vital signs, cardiology including proper lead placements, professional workplace behavior, ethics and the legal aspects of healthcare. This program includes 140 hours of classroom lecture, hands-on labs and a clinical externship opportunity at a local healthcare provider. To be eligible for the clinical rotation, students must successfully complete the 140-hour program, submit to a background check, drug screening and meet other requirements. Note: Upon successful completion of this program, students will be eligible to sit for the National Health Career Association (NHA) Certified Clinical Medical Assistant (CCMA) national examination. (classroom learning and online learning available) The 60-hour Dental Assisting Program prepares students for entry-level positions in one of the fastest growing health care positions – dental assisting. The purpose of this course is to familiarize students with all areas of pre-clinical dental assisting and provide training in the professional skills required to function as an assistant in a dental practice. This course covers the following topics: the history of dentistry and dental assisting; introduction to the dental office; the legal aspects of dentistry; and policies and guidelines. Clinical topics include: introduction to oral anatomy; dental operatory; dental equipment; introduction to tooth structure; primary and permanent teeth; the oral cavity and related structures; proper patient positioning; dental hand-pieces; sterilization; and other areas. Dialysis Technician Program (classroom learning and

online learning available) This 50-hour Dialysis Technician Program provides students with the knowledge and skills needed to perform the duties required of dialysis technicians. Under the supervision of physicians and registered nurses, dialysis technicians operate kidney dialysis machines, prepare dialyzer reprocessing and delivery systems, and maintain and repair equipment. Furthermore, technicians work with patients during dialysis procedures to monitor and record vital signs, and administer local anesthetics and drugs as needed. Additionally, they may also be involved in training patients for at-home dialysis treatment. Note: This program does not include a national or state certification as part of its overall objectives. (classroom learning and online learning available) This comprehensive, 50-hour EKG Technician Certification Program prepares students to function as EKG technicians and to take the American Society of Phlebotomy Technicians (ASPT) – Electrocardiograph (EKG) Technician Exam and other national certification exams. This course will include important practice and background information on anatomy and physiology of the heart, medical disease processes, medical terminology, medical ethics, legal aspects of patient contact, electrocardiography and stress testing. Additionally, students will practice with EKG equipment and perform hands on labs including introduction to the function and proper use of the EKG ma-

This 50-hour program will prepare students to work as a pharmacy technician in a retail or other pharmacy setting, and to take the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board’s (PTCB) exam. Course content includes: pharmacy medical terminology, the history of pharmacy, the pharmacy practice in multiple environments, pharmacy calculations and measurements, reading and interpreting prescriptions and defining drugs by generic and brand names. Through classroom lecture and hands on labs, students will review dosage calculations, drug classifications, the “top 200 drugs”, I.V. flow rates, sterile compounding, dose conversions, aseptic technique, the handling of sterile products, total parenteral nutrition (TPN), dispensing of prescriptions, inventory control and billing and reimbursement. This 70-hour Physical Therapy Aide Program prepares students for the growing field of physical therapy. Working under the direction of a physical therapist, a physical therapy aide is generally responsible for carrying out the non-technical duties of physical therapy, such as preparing treatment areas, ordering devices and supplies, and transporting patients. Furthermore, these workers assist physical therapists in providing services that help improve mobility, relieve pain, and prevent or limit permanent physical disabilities of patients suffering from injuries or disease. Physical therapy aides may be employed in nursing homes, hospitals, sports rehabilitation centers and some orthopedic clinics. This 100-hour Veterinary Assistant program introduces students to the exciting and growing field of veterinary medicine. Students will learn about the care of animals, as well as how to recognize signs of illness and disease. This program also covers interpersonal communication, interaction with clients and their animals, and how to assist the veterinarian during examinations. Administrative duties, such as fee collection, banking and accounts payable are also emphasized to provide the student with the skills necessary to maintain an efficient front office. Students will enjoy learning through classroom lecture as well as hands on labs. PHOTOGRAPHY Digital Photography for the Beginner

Do you own a digital camera but are not getting the quality images that you want? Then this class is for you! Basic photography will be covered in this class, including setting the aperture, shutter speed, ISO, working with depth-of-field, selecting lenses, backing-up, simple editing, and more.

This exciting course will help you understand 35mm photography by learning just two camera modes! That’s right – two camera modes will take care of 90% of your photographic subjects. Learn the basic recipe known as “the photographer’s triangle” while getting to know your 35mm DSLR camera; your tool to creating and capturing your art. The goal of this course is to stop using “auto everything” settings and learn how to gain creative control of your camera. EASTCONN partners with Head Start to provide a free family literacy program. Windham parents and families with English-as-a-Second-Language (ESL) needs will benefit from this program.

Reading & Math Adult Basic Education

Free Adult Basic Education classes are offered for students to work on basic reading, writing and math skills. Instructional levels range from beginner to pre-GED readiness.

J.E.T. (Jobs, Employment & Training)

This free program is for eligible 17-24 year-olds with or without a high school diploma. Opportunities include high school completion; National Retail Foundation’s Customer Service certifications; and work readiness skills and career exploration, including paid internships. Transitions to Post-Secondary Program This free program will help EASTCONN Adult Education students navigate the post-secondary maze and successfully enter college or training programs that will increase their earning potential. Community Education Registration Information Registration:

Paid pre-registration is required for all classes. Registrations are processed on a first-come, first-served, PAID basis. Classes run contingent upon PAID enrollment and may be cancelled or postponed due to insufficient registrations. If class is cancelled or postponed, you will be notified using the contact information you provide with your registration.

Confirmation/Receipts:

All confirmations and receipts are sent via e-mail. If an e-mail address is not provided, you will not receive a confirmation. If class is cancelled and time permits, notification is provided via e-mail. In the event an e-mail is not provided and time permits, we will contact registrants via the phone number provided at the time of registration.

Refund Policy:

A full refund will be issued when EASTCONN Community Education cancels a course. If desired, a voucher may be issued to use at a later date. Please allow up to four weeks from cancellation to receive credit and/or voucher. Weather Cancellations:

If EASTCONN and/or the school or site at which your class takes place is closed due to inclement weather, your class will not meet. Should bad weather develop during the day, class cancellations will be announced by late afternoon. Adult Education classes on page 11 of this catalog will be cancelled on WVIT NBC30 TV; or, listen to radio stations 98.3 FM, 97.5 FM, WINY 1350 AM, or WILI 1400 AM. Weather-related cancella-

tions for all other Community Education classes will be listed on the home page of the EASTCONN website at www.eastconn.org, and on the Community Education Facebook page.
