Carolina Fall Z BY JESS MARGESON
As rain softly pitter-pattered against the roof-top of the rustic gazebo, a beautiful table design was taking shape under its sturdy protection. The Hutchinson House, an extension of Old Edwards Inn and Spa in Highlands, N.C., provided an ideal backdrop for this intimate, fall dinner. Intricate stone work mingled with wooden accents and hand-hewn railings, and combined to form the perfect structure for this outdoor pavilion, nestled discreetly back in the woods. As the outdoor fire place roared, the table was decked in all the finery this fall season could provide. To form the back-bone of the design, large, heirloom pumpkins in muted tones of blue-grey were hollowed out to create room for an array of sumptuous fresh floral arrangements. While the most generously sized pumpkin served as the focal point of display, two smaller gourds flanked the central piece, drawing guest’s eyes down the length of the table. Each piece was chocked-full of lush florals ranging from caramel-toned orchids to vibrant burnt-orange roses, and each boasted pops of colorful berries and trailing elements. Dainty stemware and crisp linens complemented the posh look, while the more rustic addition of antler accents paid homage to the harvest season itself. The generous use of candlelight lent a delicate softness to the overall ambiance, while also providing warm contrast against the misty backdrop. In short, the table was a perfect appointment for the harvest dinner to follow. 32
