LOCAL LOYALTY CARD

Welcome to our ninth issue and third print edition of Ealing Living Magazineand what a milestone it is! We’ve doubled our print run, meaning even more of you can enjoy this issue filled with inspiration, community stories and local gems.

I just love our front cover - a striking parakeet beautifully captured by Andrew Wilson, author of Wild in Ealing & Pitshanger. His book is a must-read for local nature lovers and is available at Pitshanger Bookshop and Waterstones, Ealing as well as on his website.

Inside, we continue to celebrate everything that makes Ealing special. Our Community Spotlight shines on MIND, a vital mental health charity, while our Jewel in Ealing’s Crown is the incredible Petra Johnson, a talented local wig maker.

With Mother’s Day on 30th March, my Editor’s Picks are filled with thoughtful ideas to mark the occasion (don’t forget to add it to your diaries!). Our "Why We Love..." series highlights the hidden gem that is Ealing Village, a place many still don’t know about.

We’ve also launched two brand-new features! Just Landed rounds up all the exciting new arrivals in Ealing, while Ealing’s Most Exclusive takes you inside a stunning home in the area.

Spring is a season of renewal, and we’re embracing it fully - spring cleaning everything from our faces and wardrobes to our homes. We’re also bringing the outdoors indoors and helping you wake up your garden. Our Special Feature, with stunning photography from Anne Valluy, explores how to make the most of your garden - beyond just gardening!

And because food is at the heart of every season, we’ve got fresh springtime veg, delicious seasonal recipes and a fabulous restaurant recommendation in The Brentford Project.

I hope you love reading this issue as much as we loved putting it together. Here's to a brighter, greener and more beautiful spring in Ealing!

A NEW HUB FOR MENTAL HEALTH

This Curious Life, a new psychotherapy clinic in South Ealing’s restored Seal House, offers therapy, counselling, coaching, yoga, and meditation to support the local community. With mental health concerns on the rise, founder Ruth Gibson—a former FTSE 100 global people lead—retrained as a Psychotherapeutic Counsellor at Ealing’s Metanoia Institute to be part of the solution. Frustrated by the lack of suitable therapy spaces, she transformed Seal House into a welcoming hub with five thoughtfully designed rooms, including a space for yoga and group work. Now open, the clinic aims to break the “cycle of despair” and invites like-minded practitioners to join its mission. www.thiscuriouslife.co.uk

THE DOUGHNUT CLUB

Local author Kristina Rahim’s debut novel, The Doughnut Club, is set for release on 8th May in the UK, with publication in the US and Canada also planned for May (date to be confirmed). Inspired by her own family’s experiences, Rahim began writing for children after witnessing how often her daughters, who were conceived through donor conception, had to explain their family set-up to their peers. She believes that exposure to diverse narratives helps foster inclusivity in younger generations, making stories like The Doughnut Club both timely and important.

The novel follows 12-year-old Quinn Parker, a donor-conceived child who discovers she

PETRA JOHNSON

REDEFINING CONFIDENCE THROUGH BESPOKE WIGS

Petra Johnson never imagined that losing her hair at 19 would lead her to create something as meaningful as Berenice London. Her personal journey with Alopecia has shaped both her life and the mission of her brand. "Our mission is for women to feel themselves wearing our wigs," she explains. "They shouldn’t feel selfconscious of 'who can tell'; they should have full confidence that no one can tell."

In the early days of her hair loss journey, Johnson wore wigs that were obvious and unnatural. Looking back, she recalls feeling incredibly self-conscious. This experience shaped one of Berenice London’s core values—creating wigs so natural-looking that they are indistinguishable from real hair.

To achieve this, the company works only with the best materials, never

compromising on quality. "We work with the highest quality, ethically sourced hair. We know our donors and see the hair we will get. Donors are paid generously," she says. The lace used in their wigs is also of the highest standard, making the hairline completely undetectable. "Many clients come to us thinking they need a fringe to disguise the front, but with our wigs, they can have any hairstyle they like."

Over the years, Berenice London has become a trusted name for bespoke wigs worldwide. According to Johnson, their customer service sets them apart. "Buying wigs is not straightforward, especially for those who have never worn one before. Our clients need a lot of support, and we are here to give them that reassurance."

Another distinguishing factor is their precise attention to detail. Whether clients visit in person or work with them

remotely, they ensure a perfect fit. "We take detailed measurements of the head and hairline, even for overseas clients. We guide them through video calls to get the right measurements." Comfort is just as important as appearance. "Our wigs are breathable and don’t require adhesives— they can be put on as easily as a hat and stay securely in place."

Reflecting on ten years of helping people cope with hair loss, Johnson finds the most rewarding moments in seeing her clients’ reactions. "The most rewarding times are seeing happy tears in our clients’ eyes, receiving kind words, and knowing they recommend us to others." For chemotherapy patients, the impact is profound. "These ladies are going through such a challenging time, and having the hair of their dreams makes them so happy."

Looking to the future, Berenice London is focusing on expanding its stock wig collection to reduce wait times. "Instead of a six-week wait, we now have over 40 wigs in stock for immediate purchase, which can still be customised," Johnson shares. The company is also strengthening its partnership with the NHS to reach more patients.

From her personal struggles to the countless lives she has touched, Johnson’s journey has been one of resilience and purpose. "At Berenice London, we don’t just create wigs—we restore confidence, dignity, and joy."

COMMUNITY SPOTLIGHT

NICK SMITH: RAISING AWARENESS, BREAKING STIGMA WITH HFEH MIND

I’m Nick Smith, and I have the privilege of serving as the Head of Marketing and Communications at Hammersmith, Fulham, Ealing, & Hounslow Mind (HFEH Mind), your local mental health charity. I’ve lived in West London for over 20 years, with my sister and her family close by, while my parents are abroad. My professional journey has taken me around the world, predominantly in corporate roles within live sports and entertainment. However, I reached a point where I wanted to give back to my community and create a positive impact, especially as I raise my daughter in an environment where mental health support is prioritised.

Mental health is a cause that is incredibly close to my heart. I do this work for friends who are no longer with us, for those who suffer in silence, and for myself. Like many others, I have experienced the impact of poor mental health firsthand. At HFEH Mind, we support individuals from the age of five and upwards, ensuring that everyone has access to the help they need. My main focus is to make sure as many people as possible across West London know we exist, that our services are free, and that they are not alone.

“I do this work for friends who are no longer with us, for those who suffer in silence, and for myself.”

At HFEH Mind, we believe that everyone deserves the support and respect necessary for recovery. Our work includes listening, supporting recovery, fighting stigma, and collaborating with partners to take meaningful action on mental health. We operate over 30 different services, ranging from Mental Health Support Teams (MHSTs) in schools to Safe Spaces for those in risis and advocacy units within hospitals. We also provide wellbeing

training and strategy implementation through our Well at Work programme.

One of the key initiatives I’ve been proud to work on is Thirty for 30K. This campaign engages the heart of our local community—businesses, groups, and individuals—to spread awareness about mental health and ensure people receive the care they

deserve as early as possible. By working together, we can share stories and support each other in breaking the stigma surrounding mental health.

Our Adult Services provide a range of support, including advocacy for individuals detained under the Mental Health Act, crisis Safe Spaces across multiple boroughs, and financial and social issue navigation through our Money Minded and Compass services. Meanwhile, our Youth Services offer essential mental health support in schools and colleges, safe spaces or young people in distress, and resources such as

For the Ealing community, our work is especially vital. Ealing is a wonderfully diverse and community-driven borough, and we are committed to ensuring its residents receive the mental health support they need. Whether it’s through our Safe Spaces in South Ealing, Ealing Broadway, and the Lido Centre, or our presence at events like the Ealing Jazz and Blues Festival, we are dedicated to making a tangible difference. Our partnership with the Ealing Eagles Running Club and participation in local marathons highlight our deep-rooted connections within the borough.

Last year alone, we supported over 15,000 children and young people through our Youth Services and 17,000 adults via our Adult Services. Additionally, through our Well at Work programme, we trained over 800 individuals across 24 businesses, bringing our total impact to more than 27,000 people.

You can support HFEH Mind in many ways. If you’re a local business, community group, or individual, you can join our Thirty for 30K campaign by visiting our website and downloading the toolkit. Sharing your mental health story with us, following us on social media, volunteering, or fundraising can all make a difference. Every small action contributes to our mission of reaching 30,000 conversations across West London, ensuring that no one struggles alone.

Together, we can make a lasting impact on mental health in our community.

EALING’S MOSTexclusive

A SANCTUARY IN ST STEPHEN’S

Tucked away in the leafy St Stephen’s area of Ealing, this beautifully refurbished home is a masterclass in balancing modern living with timeless elegance. Having previously lived in Brick Lane, The Owners were drawn to West Ealing for its abundance of green space, quiet residential streets, and the convenience of the Elizabeth Line.

Having spent lockdown in a small flat, they longed for space, light, and a seamless connection to the outdoors. Their vision was clear: retain the home’s original features while embracing a contemporary aesthetic that feels both welcoming and practical. With large families, small children, and dogs frequently visiting, the house needed to be as functional as it was beautiful. Open-plan living, soaring ceilings, and vast glass doors now flood the home with natural light, creating an effortless flow between inside and out.

The transformation was brought to life by Daniel Kowalczyk of DK Home Refurbishment, who led the project with meticulous attention to detail. The renovation included a vast back extension and a loft conversion, complete with all-new plumbing and electrics. While the scale of the work was significant, Daniel recalls no major challenges—just a rewarding process of expanding and enhancing the space. His proudest contribution? The bespoke wall paneling and decorative features, which add a refined yet characterful touch to the home.

From its restored cornicing to its thoughtfully designed joinery, every detail of this St Stephen’s sanctuary has been carefully considered, resulting in a home that is as stylish as it is inviting.

TRANSITIONING YOUR SKINCARE ROUTINE FROM WINTER TO SPRING

As the seasons change, so should your skincare routine. The harsh winter months often leave skin feeling dry and dull, making spring the perfect time to refresh and rejuvenate. Experts from Northfields Beauty Bar and KuKo London share their top tips for making the transition smoothly.

Lighten Up Your Moisturiser

Winter calls for rich, heavy creams, but as the weather warms, switching to a lighter, more hydrating formula is key. "Say goodbye to those heavy creams and try something lighter and more hydrating instead," says Alba at Northfields Beauty Bar.

Kate from KuKo London adds, "We replace heavy face creams with lighter serums and creams. As temperatures rise, remember to include SPF in your daily care."

Exfoliate—But Don’t Overdo It

Exfoliation is key for a smooth, radiant complexion, but balance is crucial. "Too much exfoliation can leave your skin irritated," warns Alba. She recommends gentle enzyme-based peels, followed by a hydrating mask.

Kate advises, "Fine-grained scrubs used once a week in the evening routine are a good option. I wouldn’t recommend using AHA or BHA acids at home without professional guidance, as incorrect use can cause more harm than good."

The Power of Vitamin C and SPF

With increased sun exposure, Vitamin C and SPF are essential. "Vitamin C brightens and protects your skin, while SPF shields it from harmful UV rays," says Alba.

Kate recommends choosing Vitamin C serums with 10%-20% concentration and SPF 30-50 for daily use. "Consider a mineral sunscreen for outdoor activities or a chemical sunscreen for a lighter feel," she suggests.

Time to Refresh Your Routine

Spring is all about renewal, and that includes skincare. "You deserve a moment to pause, breathe, and feel good in your own skin," says Alba. Whether booking a facial or making small adjustments at home, a seasonal reset will leave your skin glowing and refreshed.

THE EYES HAVE IT

THREE LOCAL EYE-ENHANCING TREATMENTS

EFFORTLESS BROWS

I’d heard so many great things about Ruby Pugh, a microblading specialist in Ealing Broadway, so I was excited to finally try the treatment for myself. Microblading is essentially a form of tattooing—it’s a semipermanent technique that enhances the brows with natural, hair-like strokes. I loved the idea of waking up with perfectly shaped brows every day, but I was a bit nervous about whether it would hurt. Thankfully, the numbing cream worked brilliantly—I barely felt a thing!

Ruby started with a thorough consultation, assessing my natural brow shape and explaining everything clearly, from preparation and healing to long-term care. She encouraged me to bring inspiration photos so we could create a shape I was completely happy with.

I opted for Combo Brows, which combines microblading with soft shading. Ruby first created delicate, hair-like strokes to mimic real brows, then added shading to give them a fuller, more 3D effect. The result is beautifully tidy, structured, and incredibly natural. Her attention to detail was amazing —she carefully drew in tiny hairs to make my brows look effortlessly real. The treatment took around 2 to 2.5 hours.

A touch-up is recommended after 5-8 weeks, and with proper care, my brows should last 1-3 years. While the treatment is quite expensive, it’s worth it for the longlasting, effortlessly polished look. I love that I no longer need to fill them in every morning— if you're considering microblading, Ruby Pugh is a true expert!

BROW REVIVAL

Years of over-plucking in the ‘90s have left me filling in my brows every day, so I was eager to visit Kristina Theo at Grove Studios in Central Ealing. Kristina, who has recently set up here, has an impressive client list, including Vogue Williams and Vic Hope. Her Bespoke Brow Treatment is tailored to each individual, based on face shape, eye shape, and the natural hair (or lack of it!).

Kristina stressed the importance of a brow regrowth programme, which—if you commit to it—can make a real difference. Her top tip? Keep your growth serum next to your toothbrush so you remember to use it twice a day.

My treatment included a custom-blended tint to match my hair colour, followed by a carefully balanced mix of waxing, threading, and makeup finishing touches. No two brows are the same, so Kristina tweaked and perfected them, even adding subtle hair strokes to enhance symmetry. Her attention to detail is second to none, and I left with more defined, natural-looking brows—and a renewed determination to grow them back properly! If you’re looking for a true brow expert, Kristina is the one to see.

LASH LIFT PERFECTION

I recently had The Lash Lift at The Pretty Parlour on Ealing Green with Portia, and the results were nothing short of amazing. This treatment is like a perm for your lashes, gently curling them from the root to create the illusion of longer, fuller lashes—no extensions needed!

The process was incredibly relaxing. Portia expertly lifted my lashes using a special solution, before securing them onto a shield with a bonding gel. A setting lotion was then applied to lock in the new shape, followed by a cleanse and hydrating serum to keep the lashes nourished.

But, as with everything at The Pretty Parlour, there’s always an added extra. While the treatment worked its magic, I was treated to aromatherapy, an arm and head massage, and a cleanse with a hydrating sheet mask—pure bliss in a beautifully calm atmosphere.

The best part? My friends were wowed by the results! I never thought I had much in the way of lashes, but this treatment brought them out beautifully - no mascara or extensions required. If you’re looking for effortless, natural-looking lashes with a touch of luxury, I can’t recommend this enough.

ELM TOP TIPS

Be gentle when removing makeup to prevent stretching the delicate structures that help maintain the eyelid's natural position.

Beware of blepharitis, a common condition where the oil glands in the eyelids become blocked and inflamed. Makeup applied too close to the eyelid margin - such as eyeliner - can worsen symptoms, leading to increased inflammation and dry eyes.

With unpredictable weather, knowing what to wear in spring can be a challenge. One day, the sunshine tempts you into thinking summer has arrived early, while the next, a sudden downpour reminds you that winter isn’t quite ready to leave.

To help navigate this tricky transition, we’ve enlisted the advice of two local style experts: Sarah Sole, sustainable stylist and founder of preloved shop Sourced Studio, and Riana Horner, TV presenter, model, and influencer. From layering tips to must-have pieces, here’s how to refresh your wardrobe for the new season effortlessly.

Invest in Versatile Staples

Staple items form the foundation of a seamless seasonal transition. Sarah Sole recommends a good blazer or utility-style jacket as an essential piece:

“A light check, dark denim, or thick cotton utility jacket is incredibly versatile and will be making a big comeback this spring.”

She also highlights the continuing popularity of tank tops and waistcoats:

“Think pastel tones like powder pink and lemon yellow, or classic mocha and chocolate – perfect for layering over dresses or pairing with trousers.”

Riana Horner agrees, adding that a well-fitted blazer is a key transitional item:

“This in-between seasonal staple pairs well with everything from shirts and tees to jumpers, making layering a breeze.”

Master the Art of Layering

Layering is crucial when dressing for unpredictable spring weather, but the trick is to avoid unnecessary bulk. Sole suggests using lightweight, natural fibres such as merino wool:

“Thin merino base layers are warm yet breathable, making them great transitional pieces. COS

“People are becoming more conscious of quality and longevity, moving away from polyester and nylon in favour of timeless, comfortable, luxury materials.”

SARAH SOLE, FOUNDER OF SOURCED STUDIO

offers some excellent options, or you can find quality second-hand pieces on Vinted and eBay.”

She also notes that windbreaker-style jackets are trending this season, available in bright colours or neutral 70s-inspired shades like beige and mocha with check detailing.

Horner advises starting with lightweight, fitted base layers and gradually adding heavier fabrics:

“Don’t be afraid to show off underlayers – this adds depth and dimension to your look while keeping you comfortable.”

Update Your Footwear

As temperatures rise, it’s time to retire heavy winter boots in favour of lighter alternatives. Sole highlights the importance of footwear in defining a look:

“Ballet flats, slingbacks, and less bulky trainers will be everywhere this spring, working effortlessly with most outfits.”

Horner suggests heeled ankle boots as a stylish yet practical option: “They elevate even the most basic jeans-and-jumper outfit and pair beautifully with dresses and skirts on warmer days.”

Embrace Seasonal Colours and Fabrics

Spring fashion is about fresh, breathable fabrics and a soft yet playful colour palette. Sole predicts that natural fibres like cotton, linen, merino wool, and silk will be at the forefront: “People are becoming more conscious of quality and longevity, moving away from polyester and nylon in favour of timeless, comfortable, luxury materials.”

She also identifies key trends for the season: Ruffles – Adding softness and intrigue, perfect for balancing masculine tailoring.

Pastels & Sheer Fabrics – While not her personal favourite, Sole acknowledges their strong presence this spring.

Electric Blue, Mocha & Chocolate Brown – Bold hues making a statement.

Quiet Luxury & Tonal Dressing – Minimalist, monochrome looks in beige, cream, and mocha.

Nautical Styles – Breton tops, boat shoes, white jeans, and navy blazers – timeless spring classics.

Gingham – A perennial springtime favourite, best sourced preloved.

Horner anticipates that plaids will also dominate the season, particularly in casual shirts and tailored trousers. She highlights the growing trend of athleisure:

“It’s totally acceptable – if not encouraged – to incorporate sportswear into everyday outfits. Think track jackets, fitted joggers, and pleated tennis skirts!”

The Finishing Touches

Accessories can make all the difference in spring styling. Sole notes that neck accessories are having a moment: “Balaclavas, neckerchiefs, snoods, and even ties are all in. Raid your husband’s wardrobe for some unique finds and keep your neck warm in style!”

Horner swears by a stylish lightweight scarf:

“It’s the perfect accessory to balance out the early spring chill.”

Transitioning your wardrobe for spring doesn’t have to be daunting. By investing in versatile staples, mastering layering techniques, updating your footwear, and embracing seasonal colours and fabrics, you can effortlessly step into the new season with confidence. www.instagram.com/ rianahorner www.sourced.studio

BRINGING THE OUTDOORS

indoors

HOW TO INTEGRATE NATURAL ELEMENTS INTO YOUR HOME

Bringing nature into our homes has long been a fundamental aspect of interior design, but in recent years, the concept has evolved beyond simply adding a potted plant or two. Today, homeowners are embracing biophilic design, an approach that strengthens the connection between indoor and outdoor spaces through natural materials, organic textures, and lush greenery. Not only does this create a calming and inviting atmosphere, but studies have shown that incorporating nature into our interiors can boost mood, reduce stress, and even improve air quality.

Vanessa Fernandes, from interior design consultancy Consult by FD, explains, “Surrounding yourself with greenery can completely transform the atmosphere of a space, adding not only beauty but also a sense of peace. The key is finding the right balance between your plant’s care needs and your design vision.” She encourages layering natural materials such as wood and stone, ensuring they blend harmoniously rather than overwhelm the space. “Don’t shy away from layering different wood tones throughout your home, whether through subtle accents like photo frames or larger statement pieces. Mixing textures adds depth and interest.”

Lighting and layout play a crucial role in reinforcing the connection between indoors and out. “Maximising natural light is key,” Vanessa notes. “Large windows, glazed doors, and skylights bring in outdoor views and create a seamless transition. Strategically placed mirrors can also reflect natural light, enhancing brightness and making spaces feel more expansive.” To blur the lines further, she suggests extending interior style outdoors: “Using similar materials, finishes, and colours in both spaces can help them feel like extensions of each other. Outdoor rugs, mirrors, and lighting create a cohesive aesthetic.”

One of the most accessible ways to bring nature indoors is through houseplants. Whether you’re a seasoned plant parent or a total beginner, Aysha and Katy from Greenka, a beloved plant shop on Oak Road, offer expert advice on choosing and caring for the right plants.

For those new to houseplants, Aysha recommends starting with resilient varieties that make a big visual impact. “You can’t go wrong with Zamioculcas Zamiifolia, or Easy ZZ. It thrives on neglect, making it perfect for busy lives. Sansevieria (Snake Plant) is another fantastic choice—its bold, upright form adds structure to a room while purifying the air.” If you’re after something with a more dramatic presence, Monstera Deliciosa (Cheese Plant) offers stunning, fenestrated leaves that make a striking focal point. For low-light conditions, Aysha suggests options that naturally tolerate reduced sunlight. “Aspidistra Elatior, or Cast Iron Plant, is practically indestructible. It originated in shaded woodlands, so it’s well adapted to dim interiors. Pothos (Epipremnum Pinnatum) is another versatile trailing plant that thrives in indirect light.” When working with small spaces, compact varieties such as Bird’s Nest Fern, Alocasia Dragon Scale, and Peperomia are excellent choices.

Keeping plants healthy year-round requires understanding their specific needs. “Light is non-negotiable,” Katy stresses. “Before buying a plant, assess the natural light in your space. Even 'low-light' plants still need some indirect sunlight to thrive.” When it comes to watering, there is no universal rule: “Check the soil rather than sticking to a set schedule. Succulents and cacti need dry soil between waterings, whereas tropical plants prefer more consistent moisture, especially in summer. Always ensure pots have proper drainage to avoid root rot.”

Maintaining plants isn’t just about watering—it’s also about ongoing care. “Dusting the leaves regularly helps them absorb light more effectively,” Aysha advises. “Using the right soil mix for each plant type also prevents common issues like overwatering or poor drainage.”

By embracing biophilic design and incorporating plants thoughtfully, you can create a home that not only looks beautiful but also nurtures well-being. Whether it’s through statement greenery, natural materials, or strategic lighting, bringing the outdoors in is one of the most effective ways to transform your space into a peaceful, restorative sanctuary.

WAKE UP WAKE UP

YOUR GARDEN YOUR GARDEN

EXPERT TIPS FOR A FLOURISHING SPRING EXPERT TIPS FOR A FLOURISHING SPRING

Waking up your garden for springtime is a delightful ritual that not only prepares your outdoor space for new growth but also invigorates your mind and spirit. With winter finally behind us, it’s the perfect opportunity to refresh your garden and set the stage for a season of colour, life, and tranquillity. Local Garden Designer Agata Henderson suggests that "January and February present the perfect opportunity to revamp your garden while plants are still dormant." This early preparation is key: before the first shoots emerge, take time to clear out any dead foliage or debris left over from winter. Begin by carefully digging out perennials, sifting the soil, and clearing the area around mature shrubs and trees. This foundational work sets the tone for everything that follows.

Pruning is another essential task. Agata advises, "Inspect and clean the roots of any plants you wish to retain, then incorporate fresh compost before replanting." For smaller shrub roses, a light pruning—cutting them by half—can stimulate vibrant growth later in the season. In addition to pruning, be sure to remove persistent weeds such as bindweed, nettles, brambles, and buttercups. These unwanted guests can quickly overrun your garden if left unchecked.

Once the initial cleaning is complete, it’s time to focus on soil health. One of Agata’s top recommendations is to "apply a generous 10 cm layer of bark mulch" to protect your plants, enrich the soil, and hinder future weed growth. Bark mulch decomposes slowly, retains moisture, and reduces weeds by about 70%. Adding fresh compost or a slow-release fertiliser can give your plants the nutrient boost they need to thrive throughout the growing season.

Spring is also the ideal time to plant new flowers, vegetables, or herbs. If you love spring-flowering bulbs but missed the autumn planting window, don’t worry—many garden centres now offer blooming bulbs like alliums and daffodils, which can be left in the ground year after year. For an instant burst of colour, Agata recommends hellebores and cyclamens, noting that their blossoms are long-lasting and resilient in cooler weather.

Don’t forget to check and repair any garden structures that might have suffered during the winter months. Trellises, raised beds, and even your irrigation system should be inspected and serviced to ensure they’re ready for the season ahead. A little maintenance now can prevent bigger issues later.

For those with busy lifestyles, Agata offers a few lowmaintenance ideas. "At Agata Henderson Garden Design, we specialise in creating easy to look after urban gardens for busy families," she explains. Evergreen plants such as Fatsia japonica 'Spider Web', Loropetalum 'Chinese Lanterns', and various Euonymus species are excellent choices as they provide year-round beauty with minimal effort. Even in shaded areas, plants like Sarcococca Confusa or Heuchera add visual interest without demanding too much attention.

As you embark on your spring garden revival, remember that each small step—whether it’s a tidy cupboard of garden tools or a freshly mulched bed—contributes to a more vibrant and inviting outdoor space. With careful planning and a few expert tips from Agata Henderson, your garden will soon burst into life, welcoming the season with open arms and a renewed sense of energy.

HARMONY IN DIVERSITY

EALING TOGETHER: A LANDMARK CONCERT AT THE ROYAL ALBERT HALL

On 24th June 2025, the Royal Albert Hall will play host to an extraordinary musical event as Ealing Council’s Music Service (EMS) and The Ealing Symphony Orchestra (ESO) join forces for Ealing Together – Harmony in Diversity. This groundbreaking performance will bring together 1,400 schoolchildren from across the borough of Ealing, alongside the fifty-strong ESO, in a celebration of local talent, community, and cultural diversity.

The event will showcase a range of musical performances from young musicians and established composers. Among the highlights is the world premiere of Ada in Ealing, a new composition by Ealing-based composer and ESO member, Laura Rossi. Commissioned by ESO in 2022 to mark its centenary, the piece features a libretto by renowned children’s author Michael Rosen, and follows the journey of Ada Lovelace through the borough. The programme will also include music from celebrated local composers Hannah Kendall and Liz Sharma, as well as wellknown works such as O Fortuna from Carmina Burana by Carl Orff and Adiemus by Karl Jenkins.

"For many of these children, this will be their first opportunity to perform in a world-famous venue, making it a truly lifechanging experience."

The concert represents an unprecedented collaboration between EMS and ESO. Over 1,200 children from 40 schools will form a massed choir, supported by young musicians from groups including Ealing Youth Orchestra, Ealing Youth Jazz Orchestra, and other Cadenza ensembles run by EMS. For many of these children, this will be their first opportunity to perform in a world-famous venue, making it a truly life-changing experience. Lee Marchant, Acting Head of Ealing Music Service, shared his thoughts on the project: “This is a fantastic opportunity to showcase local talent while fostering a sense of collaboration and community within Ealing. By bringing together schoolchildren from across the borough, we hope to inspire a lasting love of music and the arts.”

Jo Boswell, Chair of ESO, reflected on the collaboration: “We wanted to plan something really special to mark ESO’s centenary, but post-pandemic challenges made it difficult to bring our vision to life. Partnering with EMS has allowed us to achieve our dream of performing at the Royal Albert Hall while strengthening connections between different music groups in the borough.”

Organising an event of this scale comes with its challenges, from coordinating

rehearsals across multiple schools to ensuring the smooth execution of such a complex performance. However, both EMS and ESO have been working tirelessly to ensure that every logistical detail is meticulously planned. Their efforts have been supported by the Royal Albert Hall, which has offered a charity-discounted let as part of its commitment to supporting the arts and education.

The initiative has received overwhelming enthusiasm from schools, students, and the wider community. Marchant noted, “It’s been incredible to see how engaged the schools have been. The most rewarding part has been witnessing the collective energy and excitement of the children as they prepare for this once-in-alifetime experience.”

Beyond the concert itself, Ealing Together – Harmony in Diversity aims to leave a lasting impact on music education and cultural engagement in the borough. By offering students the opportunity to perform on such a prestigious stage, the event seeks to inspire a deeper appreciation for the arts while reinforcing the importance of community and collaboration.

Both EMS and ESO hope that this concert will serve as a catalyst for future projects that celebrate Ealing’s rich cultural landscape. “This is about more than just one night at the Royal Albert Hall,” said Marchant. “We want to create lasting connections between schools, music groups, and the wider community, ensuring that the love of music continues to flourish in Ealing.”

Tickets for Ealing Together – Harmony in Diversity will go on sale in early 2025. For those interested in supporting the event or making a donation, more information can be found at https://ealingmusicservice.com/events/ealing.

GARDENS AREN’T JUST FOR GARDENING

TURNING LOCAL BACKYARDS INTO THRIVING WELLNESS AND BUSINESS SPACES

ANJA FORKERT PERSONAL TRAINER

I started my garden gym purely out of love and passion for fitness. My days begin bright and early—if a client wants to train at 5 a.m., I’m more than happy to start! I offer a mix of private sessions, small group training, women-only classes, and personal training, with a special focus on rehab for lower back, knee, ankle and shoulder issues. I’m a constant learner, always looking for new and exciting exercises, which is why I’ve recently started using skateboards as a creative alternative to a reformer. For me, technique is far more important than making money—keeping class sizes small allows me to focus on each client, ensuring they stay motivated and perform exercises correctly. Having my gym at home also means I can keep working even when my boys are off school, which makes life a lot easier.

It’s not really about my back garden—it’s about my love for working with people and seeing them push themselves. Nothing makes me happier than watching my clients achieve results by listening and putting in the effort. Training outdoors has so many benefits, and I love continuously changing the layout and equipment to keep things fresh. While my indoor space can sometimes feel too small, using the garden means my home still feels like a home rather than just a workplace.

Before I installed AstroTurf, winter rain would flood the garden, creating a mess, but now we can train all year round. It can be challenging to keep workouts varied, but that’s what excites me —finding new equipment, new exercises, and new ways to help my clients grow.

TOM WHITAKER LITTLE HEALING SAUNA & ICE BATH

I run a private sauna and ice bath business called Little Healing, tucked away down the side of my house here in Ealing. I’ve always been a big fan of hot and cold therapy for relaxation and recovery after workouts, so I thought— why not share it with my neighbours? The setup allows individuals or pairs to book online and enjoy a peaceful, restorative session. It’s all about boosting wellbeing, easing stress, and leaving people feeling refreshed. Having it in my garden means I can offer a down-to-earth, local wellness experience without the fuss of a big commercial space, making it feel more personal and inviting.

What I love most is how close to home everything is—literally! I can step outside to check the sauna temperature, prep the ice bath, or tweak the setup to keep things running smoothly. There’s something special about seeing the space lit up at night and welcoming clients ready to unwind. Balancing this with my 9-to-5 job has been a challenge, especially when demand first took off, but I’ve learned to stay organised and stick to a routine. Ealing’s community vibe has been a huge support—locals love discovering new wellness spots, and word-of-mouth has brought in so many new faces. Working in the garden also keeps me connected to nature, inspiring me to enhance the experience with thoughtful touches like soft lighting, essential oils, and incense. It’s a simple setup, but that outdoor energy is something my clients really feel—and that keeps me excited about growing Little Healing.

AOIFE NAUGHTON CONSULTANT OCULOPLASTIC SURGEON AND INJECTOR

I’m a Consultant Oculoplastic Surgeon, specialising in eye and facial surgery, working at an NHS in Portsmouth and a private practice in London. Seeing a growing demand for non-surgical aesthetic treatments among friends and neighbours in Ealing, I wanted to offer a more convenient and affordable alternative to city clinics. By running my injectable treatments from a dedicated garden space, I can keep costs lower while providing highquality, ethical care in a relaxed, local setting. It’s incredibly rewarding to bring Harley Street-level expertise into my own

Compared to hospital life, my garden clinic offers a peaceful retreat and a better work-life balance - though I do have to resist sneaking in after the kids are in bed! Ealing’s strong sense of community has been a huge support, and having moved here just before becoming parents, my husband and I have felt truly embraced. Beyond treating clients, my clinic doubles as a quiet space for writing, webinars, and focused work. It’s where I feel most creative and productive, making it invaluable both professionally and personally.

I am a visual artist specialising in 2D and 3D artworks, mainly focusing on flowers using water-based media. Having a dedicated studio in our back garden has given me the space and freedom to create without the interruptions of everyday family life. It allows me to plan, experiment, and leave works in progress to dry or evolve over time. The studio also serves as a place to store, display, and reflect on my finished pieces. Being surrounded by greenery and nature brings a real sense of calm, and the peaceful environment fuels my creativity. I love that I can step straight into my studio whenever inspiration strikes, whether it’s to sketch a new idea or refine an ongoing piece.

Working in my garden studio keeps me connected to nature, which is at the heart of my art. I adore watching plants grow through the seasons, many of which have sentimental value as they were given to me by my parents and neighbours. However, working alone can sometimes feel isolating, especially as I was used to being part of a team in previous roles. To overcome this, I joined an art class and a creatives’ network, set up an artist social group, and now mentor others who are new to the field. Taking part in the BEAT (Borough of Ealing Art Trail) and volunteering on the organising committee has also been incredibly rewarding, allowing me to connect with fellow artists and share my work with the local community. Ealing itself is a constant source of inspiration, with its rich cultural diversity, history, and green spaces shaping both my work and my approach to creativity. https://janestonebridgedesigns.square.site

TZADDI ALLICK-HAMILTON BIJA GARDEN YOGA STUDIO

Bija Garden is a holistic eco-space designed for people to reconnect with themselves through yoga, meditation, holistic therapies, retreats, and events. Nicknamed the "Womb Room," it has a strong focus on pre- and postnatal care. The vision for this space came to me during my yoga teacher training in 2016, where I was surrounded by palm trees and the Caribbean Sea. I wanted to recreate that sense of tranquility in the UK, so I incorporated tropical plants, underfloor heating, and the soothing rhythm of ocean breathwork. Owning my space also felt empowering—offering stability in a changing business landscape and creating a welcoming, inclusive environment for those who, like me, hadn’t always seen themselves represented in the wellness industry.

The biggest gift of working from my garden has been time—I can teach a class and still be present for my family without a long commute. The studio is also incredibly versatile, transforming into a serene workspace, a filming set, or an intimate event venue. Of course, there have been challenges, from seasonal garden upkeep to ensuring the space remains a safe and supportive environment for my family and clients. But the benefits far outweigh them. Having a sanctuary just steps away has been life-changing, particularly during the pandemic when I could retreat into meditation and chanting for my own wellbeing. Being in Ealing, where my family has deep roots, adds another layer of meaning—I love hosting tea ceremonies using my grandmother’s tea sets, connecting past and present in a space that truly feels like home.

Tucked away between Hanger Lane and Madeley Road, Ealing Village is one of West London’s most distinctive residential enclaves. Designed in Dutch ColonialBaroque style by R. Toms & Partners and built between 1934 and 1936, this private estate of five Art Deco blocks was envisioned as a slice of Hollywood in Ealing. Though film stars from nearby Ealing Studios preferred West End hotels, the estate became home to film crew members and local residents.

Paul Leslie of Leslie & Co. highlights its charm: “Ealing Village is a distinctive private estate with unique architectural character and a rich history.

Constructed between 1934 and 1936, it features Dutch Colonial-style white facades, red-painted ornaments, and green-tiled roofs. Initially designed to attract film stars, it instead became home to film crew members and locals.”

“Though it never became the celebrity haven its developers envisioned, Ealing Village has carved its own identity.”

A Rich History with Wartime Resilience

Ealing Village played a role in WWII, with resident Vernon Coelho serving as air raid warden from the estate’s bike shed. Residents grew food along the railway as part of the ‘Dig for Victory’ campaign, and its white facades were rumored to have spared it from bombing, being mistaken for a hospital. Air raid shelters beneath the lawns remain intact, and in 1991, the estate received Grade II-listed status, later reinforced as an area of Special Character and Local Importance by Ealing Council.

A Community at Its Heart

More than its architecture, Ealing Village thrives on its strong community. Amanda, a resident and co-owner of T&T Markets, shares: “What I love most is our community. In summer, we BBQ together in our beautiful shared garden. We’re a diverse, like-minded group keeping this piece of Ealing history alive.”

Amanda’s connection runs deep: “As a baby, my grandma pushed me through the village in my pram. When I viewed my flat in 2011, she had passed away, but neighbours still remembered her. We joke that we are Ealing's answer to Hollywood.”

A Timeless Architectural Marvel

The estate’s five blocks, with white facades and green-tiled roofs, resemble Amsterdam’s canal-side buildings. Flats retain original 1930s features like brass door handles and tiled fireplaces. The clubhouse, once the social hub, hosted coffee mornings, whist and beetle drives, and Christmas variety shows. By the 1960s, it gained a reputation for lively gatherings, likened to Peyton Place.

Resurgence and Preservation

After years under private ownership, residents acquired the freehold and began restoring Ealing Village. The lost

gates and railings were reinstated, and amenities like the clubhouse, tennis court, and swimming pool were carefully maintained. The Grade II-listed pool, with yellow tiles, a lion’s head fountain, and a covered walkway, remains a favourite summer gathering spot.

Ealing’s Hidden Hollywood

Ealing Village remains a sought-after location, attracting professionals, creatives, and even a cabinet minister. With excellent transport links - including three Tube lines and direct trains to Paddington - it offers a peaceful yet connected retreat in West London.

Though it never became the celebrity haven its developers envisioned, Ealing Village has carved its own identity. As Amanda sums up: “Ealing Village is like nowhere I’ve ever lived! The 30s design is unique, and the shared spaces—the clubhouse, tennis court, and swimming pool—make us feel like we’re on holiday in summer.”

A true hidden gem, Ealing Village stands as a testament to thoughtful architecture, resilient history, and a community that cherishes its past while embracing its future.

DECLUTTER AND RENEW

HOW SPRING CLEANING BOOSTS WELLBEING

There are some 'truths' which we need no evidence for. Ice cream is cold, ovens can be hot and spring cleaning can be cathartic." These words from Ruth Gibson, founder of This Curious Life, encapsulate the spirit of spring cleaning—a time when the simple act of decluttering transforms not just our homes but our state of mind.

Spring is a season of renewal and rebirth, and what better way to embrace this than by clearing away the old and inviting fresh energy into our lives? The process of decluttering has profound psychological benefits, helping to reduce stress and enhance overall well-being. As Ruth reminds us, it’s not merely about the end result of a tidy space; the journey itself, filled with small wins and mindful moments, is equally rewarding.

Holly Murphy from Karu Declutter Reorganise offers practical advice for those looking to embark on their own spring cleaning journey. “Have a plan and stick to it,” she advises. Holly emphasises the importance of scheduling your tasks around your daily commitments, noting that both physical and mental energy are essential to the process. By starting with small items like clothes and food, rather than tackling large pieces of furniture right away, you can steadily build momentum. “When the home is organised, so is the mind,” Holly explains, highlighting how an orderly space contributes to mental clarity and a more positive outlook.

The benefits of decluttering extend beyond the confines of our homes. Kyle Worral from Acton-based car valet company, KEW the Valet, points out that our vehicles—often our second largest investment—deserve attention too. “Just like our homes, it's essential to ensure your car is at its best inside and out. It promotes healthy wellbeing!” By keeping our cars clean and well-maintained, we not only protect our investments but also create a pleasant environment for our daily commutes, which in turn supports our mental and emotional health.

For those who find the task of deep cleaning overwhelming, Liz Lutz from Time for You Domestic Services underscores the benefits of hiring professional cleaners. According to Liz, professional services focus on areas that are often neglected—such as skirting boards, behind appliances, and high ceilings. This thorough approach not only results in a spotless home but also improves air quality by eliminating allergens like dust and pollen. “A professional deep clean extends the life of carpets, upholstery, and furnishings,” she explains, while also saving time and reducing the stress associated with tackling every nook and cranny on your own.

Moreover, spring cleaning offers an unexpected bonus—the boost of endorphins and the sense of achievement that comes from physical exertion and realising tangible progress. The simple act of setting aside time to organise a drawer or rearrange a room can be incredibly therapeutic. It’s a moment to be mindful, to focus on the present, and to celebrate the small victories that lead to a more organised and calm environment.

THE POMODORO TECHNIQUE

As we welcome the season of renewal, let us embrace the transformative power of spring cleaning. Whether you’re clearing out a single cupboard or enlisting the help of professionals, every small step contributes to a clearer mind, a healthier home, and a renewed sense of energy for the days ahead.

The Pomodoro Technique, a time management method recommended by Ruth Gibson of This Curious Life in South Ealing, is designed to enhance focus and productivity through structured work intervals. Developed by Francesco Cirillo in the 1980s, the technique involves working in short, timed sessions—typically 25 minutes— followed by a five-minute break. After completing four of these "pomodoros," a longer break of around 30 minutes is taken.

By breaking tasks into manageable chunks and minimising distractions, the Pomodoro Technique helps individuals work more efficiently. A timer is used to maintain the balance between focused effort and rest. The method takes its name from the Italian word for tomato, as Cirillo originally used a tomato-shaped kitchen timer to test the system.

The Pomodoro Technique follows six key steps:

1. Set a timer for 25 minutes.

Choose a task to focus on.

2. Work on the task without interruptions.

3. When the timer rings, take a five-minute break. 4. Repeat the cycle three more times. 5. After completing four cycles, take a longer 30-minute break before starting again. 6.

Recommended as a simple yet effective way to boost concentration and reduce procrastination, the technique is widely used by professionals, students, and creatives alike.

ASAVOURING SPRING

CELEBRATING SEASONAL INGREDIENTS WITH FRESH FLAVOUR

s spring arrives, it brings an abundance of fresh produce - crisp greens, vibrant rhubarb, and sweet strawberries. Eating seasonally not only enhances flavour but also supports local growers.

James from Parade Fruiterers on Mattock Lane has seen a growing interest in seasonal shopping. "More and more people want to know what's in season and grown in the UK. We go to market every day to ensure the freshest produce, straight from farms to our shop overnight. Supermarket produce, by contrast, is stored longer, which affects its freshness." His top tip for preserving quality? "Keep fruit and veg in the fridge or a cool garage - never a hot kitchen!"

Local chef Sophia Salloum of Pebbles London loves the delicacy of spring vegetables. "Peas, asparagus, and leafy greens are best kept simple. Blanching peas in salted water and then cooling them in

ice water locks in flavour. A drizzle of olive oil, a sprinkle of salt and pepper, and lemon zest elevate fresh greens without masking their taste."

For those looking to combine fresh produce with store cupboard staples, Sophia suggests creative pairings. "Spring vegetables make great sauces for pasta or grains like couscous and quinoa. Rhubarb’s tartness can shine in both sweet and savoury dishes - I love roasting it with lemon zest and sugar for a glossy topping or poaching it in vanilla syrup for a panna cotta."

With nature doing the hard work, the key is to let seasonal ingredients shine - keeping meals fresh, simple, and full of spring’s vibrancy.

TOP TABLE

For an early 10th birthday celebration, my daughter and I headed to Rottura in The Brentford Project for a special mummydaughter date night. She adores Italian food, so this felt like the perfect spot to mark the occasion.

The Brentford Project is really coming into its own— Sam’s is just a few doors up, Plonkers Bar is nearby, and there’s the added excitement of an Everyman Cinema opening soon. It’s a fantastic area that’s beginning to buzz, and Rottura fits right in.

Rottura, which opened in July 2024, is a beautifully designed space with a relaxed, welcoming vibe. The young staff are personable and friendly, creating an atmosphere that’s both stylish and comfortable. The restaurant’s name itself is a heartfelt tribute—RO from Romano, their grandparents’ surname, and TTURA from their own, Frattura. The founders, Emily and Elena Frattura, were deeply inspired by their Italian roots, growing up with a love for food, shaped by family gatherings where meals were central to their lives. Elena Frattura, a quarterfinalist on MasterChef, is the culinary mastermind behind Rottura, bringing her skill and passion to every dish. Their passion for sharing authentic Italian cooking shines through in every plate.

We started with the tempura broccolilight, crispy, and utterly delicious. My daughter was particularly impressed that broccoli could taste this good! The arancini followed—three gorgeously cheesy, golden-fried rice balls that melted in the mouth. A steaming basket of homemade focaccia rounded off the starters, fresh from the oven and wonderfully fragrant.

For mains, she chose the classic Ragu while I opted for Cacio e Pepe. Both were beautifully simple Italian dishes, relying on quality ingredients and skilled execution rather than unnecessary embellishment. It’s clear that the team at Rottura understands the essence of Italian cooking—letting the flavours speak for themselves.

We couldn’t resist dessert — a tiramisu and a chocolate mousse. Rich, indulgent, and the perfect end to an already fantastic meal. More than satisfied, we left feeling happy and well-fed, having enjoyed a truly delightful dining experience.

The service was attentive without being intrusive, adding to the friendly, family atmosphere. Given the quality of the food, the welcoming ambiance, and the genuine passion behind the restaurant, Rottura offers excellent value for money.

Brentford is lucky to have a place like this — true, authentic Italian cooking with heart. I can’t wait to return!

"It’s clear that the team at Rottura understands the essence of Italian cooking - letting the flavours speak for themselves."

Cook time: 40 minutes | Serves: 4

1.5kg baby new potatoes

1 tbsp garlic granules

1 tbsp onion granules

1 tsp sweet smoked paprika

Salt and pepper, to taste

Olive oil, for roasting

460g asparagus

200g frozen peas

150g radishes

For the pesto:

100g pine nuts

1 clove garlic

50g spinach

50g basil

1 lemon (juice and zest)

125g olive oil (plus extra if needed)

Salt and pepper, to taste

Preheat the oven to 200°C and line a baking tray with foil. Halve the potatoes, spread them on the tray, drizzle with olive oil, and season with garlic granules, onion granules, paprika, salt, and pepper. Roast for 30 minutes until golden and crispy.

Meanwhile, toast pine nuts in a dry pan, then blend with spinach, basil, garlic, lemon juice, and olive oil until smooth, seasoning to taste.

Boil salted water and prepare an ice bath. Blanch asparagus (2–3 mins) and peas (30 secs–1 min), then transfer to ice water. Thinly slice radishes, setting half aside for garnish.

In a bowl, toss roasted potatoes with blanched veg, half the radishes, and 3 tbsp pesto. Adjust seasoning and top with remaining radishes and lemon zest. Serve as a side or enjoy on its own!
