Dear Readers,
Happy New Year! I hope that 2017 was a great year for you and yours. I am looking forward to 2018. I am spending Christmas in Colorado with the kids and having a wonderful time. It’s brutally cold but we’re snuggling up by the fire and enjoying the beautiful snow. It’s hard to believe Cory is five, Locklan is three and baby Riggs will be one this month.
Before I came to Denver, they all came to Idaho and Cory and “Lock” were finally old enough to go tubing at Eagle Island State Park at Gateway’s tubing hill. The first run they were holding onto mom and dad’s hands nervously looking down the hill but by the second run, they were on their own, insisting everyone watch as they barreled down the lanes. Smiles could not be bigger! If you haven’t gone yet plan to! You can reserve your time at Gatewayparks. com.
Once again we’re featuring some of Idaho’s favorite hot springs. It’s a wonderful way to relax and enjoy the beauty of an Idaho winter’s day. Take a moment to check them out and plan your getaway.
It’s NFL playoff time and my Steelers are looking strong. I am hoping for a championship playoff game between New England and Pittsburgh so the Steelers can enact some revenge on those dirty Patriots! Go Steelers!
With temperatures dropping and snow falling remember your neighbors that may not be able to remove their snow. If you are able please take a few extra minutes and help your neighbors and consider how blessed you are to have the strength and health to help out.
I hope 2018 is a blessed year for you and yours. Thank you once again thank you for including the Eagle Informer in your life!

I am all about a place for everything and everything in its place. Even better, everything in its place and out of sight! That’s why I was so thrilled to find the plans for this huge garage cabinet. It just takes basic building skills and tools. Head to Evan’s Building center for most everything you’ll need. I am planning to add a wall of pegboard inside one of the cabinet doors.
Some of the hardware for this specific project can be ordered at Johnsonhardware.com

JANUARY JANUARY 15
FITNESS OVER FIFTY
Happy New Year!
5 Predictions for the Year Ahead
Happy New Year! January is an exciting time – you have a clean slate to become who you want and accomplish what you want in the year ahead.
In the world of fitness, this time of year means new faces and lives being changed. New Year’s magically pulls people to exercise – maybe you’re feeling the pull yourself.
Here are 5 predictions for the year ahead:
1. 2018 is the year that many will regain their health. Activity trackers continue to become the IN thing for helping people to move more.
The real food movement is taking the globe by storm as people turn away from fast and processed foods and return to wholesome, nutritious meals. 2018 will be the year that many people adopt a healthier lifestyle.
2. 92% of all New Year’s Resolutions will end in failure. While millions will start gung ho in January with lofty goals, the reality is that most will fail. Here’s why:
• They bite off more than they can chew.
• In all the excitement of becoming a better person and transforming their life in the New Year, they make the crucial mistake of committing too much. But reality soon sets in and they give up.
Want to be a part of the 8% who will achieve their resolutions? Then set realistic goals.
• Instead of resolving to lose 50 pounds by June, commit to exercise 3-4 times each week.
• Instead of resolving to give up all carbs, commit eating healthier snacks.
• Instead of resolving to drop 3 sizes in 3 months, commit to losing 1 pound each week until you reach your desired size.
• Instead of resolving to never eat out again, commit to eating healthy all week and reward yourself with one meal out on the weekends.
Remember that the whole point of making a New Year’s Resolution is to become a healthier, happier and more
successful person. Small changes done consistently will make a big difference.
3. I will help lots of new clients in 2018. At this time every year I am flooded with new, motivated clients who are ready to change their lives. Starting in January and right through December, I will see these amazing people face their fears, dig in with determination and accomplish great things.
Activity trackers help people move more, and in 2018 they will remain a popular tool.
That’s why I love what I do so much.
4. Every single new client that sticks with my program in 2018 will transform their life.
When a new client comes in to share their goals, I put together a plan to make those goals a reality. Sure, you have to follow the plan, show up for workouts and change how you eat, but isn’t it worth the results? And the results are all yours.
5. When you join my program your success is guaranteed. My clients meet their goals – the only question for you is what are you waiting for?
I predict that 2018 will be an amazing year. Come prove me right :)

Soak Your Bones and Enjoy a Plethora of IDAHO HOT SPRINGS
Another great resource is The Complete Guide to Idaho Hot Springs by Doug Roloff, available on Amazon.com. The book features over 120 natural hot springs, GPS coordinates, comprehensive directions and descriptions. Several years ago I used this guide to visit dozens of springs within a few hours drive from Eagle. The springs below are private, commercial facilities within a few hours drive from Eagle.
>> Visitidaho.org is also a good resource for maps and features.
PRIVATE POOLS THE SPRINGS
BY MARY MCFARLAND
Idaho has so many hot springs it could take a lifetime to find them all. The amenities vary from zero, to a full on resort experience. There are public roadside pools, ski or snowshoe in hidden hideaways and full on private facilities available all over Idaho.
Idahohotsprings.com lists most, if not all of the springs in the state by region. They also rate springs by amount of trash, water clarity and temperature. It seems a lot of people head up to the various springs, party and leave trash behind. They rightfully, suggest never bringing glass and stashing a spare trash bag to clean up on your way out. It’s a shame that a few people can be so careless.
The Springs in Idaho City has to be one of the nicest facilities in the State. With a beautiful mountain backdrop and top of the line amenities, it’s one of my all time favorites. They serve food, drinks, feature live music and excellent new dressing rooms. Reservations are easy to make online and highly recommended. Visit Thespringsid.com for hours and rates.
Location: Idaho City
Directions: from Boise, head north on Highway 21 towards Idaho City. Prior to reaching Idaho City, look for the signed turnoff past mile marker 37
KIRKHAM HOT SPRINGS
Kirkham Hot Springs is nestled on the South Fork of the Payette River below a highway campground. Cross the bridge to Kirkham Campground and park at the west end. There is a short path that takes you down to the river. The springs are visible from the highway and are frequently filled with soaking, relaxed bodies. There are rock and sand pools with various steamy showers awaiting you. The campground nearby is usually full in the summer months so congestion is frequently high at that time.
Location: Southwestern Idaho, 4.2 miles east of Lowman on Highway 21.
Directions: Hwy. 21 to Lowman, turn left on the Banks-Lowman Hwy. Or take Hwy. 55 north to Banks, turn right on Banks-Lowman Hwy.

GIVENS HOT SPRINGS
Natural hot water here has been a popular attraction for thousands of years. Long an Indian winter village site, the area was homesteaded in 1881 by Oregon Trail pioneers Milford and Mattie Givens. A pool and hotel were built around 1900 to accommodate travelers, Silver City miners seeking arthritis relief, and local residents coming out for diversion. The hotel burned down in 1939, and was replaced by cabins that are still in use today. The current poolhouse, built in 1952, replaced the early-1900’s structure. Givens celebrated its 125th Anniversary in 2006, continuing a legacy of community involvement, family fun and lasting memories. The naturally soft water in the pool is maintained between 95-100 degrees, (cooler in the summer; warmer in the winter), enjoyable any time of the year. Givens is great location for family reunions, birthday parties, company picnics and informal gatherings. Boating and fishing are available 3 miles south on the nearby Snake River. Within a 45-mile radius of Givens there are two museums, Indian petroglyphs, ATV trails, and Silver City, an historic mining town. See ‘Places of Interest’ on Givens website.
Location: 11309 Hwy. 78, Givens Hot Springs, ID 83641
Directions: 11 mi. SE. of Marsing ID on Hwy. 78
Nearest City: Marsing
See website-givenshotsprings.com
BANBURY HOT SPRINGS
Banbury Hot Springs along the Snake River offers an outdoor pool fed by hot and cold natural artesian wells, hot baths and jacuzzis, campground facilities for RVs and tents, a picnic area and a boat ramp. It is a popular spot to soak in the Thousand Springs area.
Location: Hwy 30, 10 mi N of Buhl
Directions: Halfway between Buhl and Hagerman, look for the Banbury Sign on Hwy 30
Nearest City: Buhl
MIRACLE HOT SPRINGS
Miracle Hot Springs is open year-round with 15 Private Hot Pools, 6 VIP Pools & 4 Outdoor Public Pools. The water is soft to the touch and naturally clean with a sensational alkaline pH of 9.6. Professional massage therapists are on site. There is a 10-unit RV park w/electricity & water and tent spaces. Miracle also offers overnight camping domes for rent and a 1000-sq. ft. event dome can be reserved for group activities.
Location: South Central Idaho, in Buhl
Directions: 10 miles NW of Buhl, or 9 miles South of Hagerman on Hwy 30.
Nearest City: Hagerman
BURGDORF
Accessible in winter only by snowmobile or cross-country ski.
Burgdorf offers fifteen rustic cabins for rent ranging from 70 to 132 years old. Open all year.
Location: Southwestern Idaho, N. of McCall
Directions: From McCall, N. on Warren Wagon Road 30 miles to Burgdorf Junction and then left to the camp area. Snowmobile access only in winter.

Unique Privacy Screening
Idaho’s winter weather is a good time to re-design your outdoor living space on paper. Have you heard the old saying, “good fences make good neighbors”? Every family could use a little outdoor privacy to dine, to play and to be refreshed by nature in their backyard. In addition to traditional fences, you have multiple options to choose from when you consider screening poor views out and privacy into your landscape or patio. Here are some fun options to think about this cold January.
Rock Walls
Traditionally, rock walls have been one of two typesmortared rocks, or dry stacked. Both versions are still quite popular and between the two, fit a variety of design styles. Gabion walls have been used for centuries. In fact, the term “gabion” is French, and dates to the mid 1600’s . Gabion walls are being used in residential landscapes now. An assortment of metal gauges and finishes can be used for the cages. There are many local rock sizes and colors that can be used to fill your privacy screen. We love the lavender plants growing in the windows in these gabion walls!
Living Walls
Living walls can be constructed in many ways, and with many different plants. The pockets in the example on the right contain an entire herb garden. What a terrific way to screen your patio, enjoy the natural aromas, and have seasonings handy for the grill! The pockets hold soil and plants in, yet allow for drainage. A drip line irrigation system for watering could be installed, or you might enjoy the relaxing act of hand watering with the gentle spray of a hose.
Versatile Screening – Walls with Planter Boxes
Does your landscape need blocks of screening in certain areas? The versatile screening system below is a great way to block particular areas completely with the corrugated metal, lightly screen with the planter boxes, and allow airflow through some spaces with horizontal wood slats.
Notice the way the more open areas of the system combined with the living plants (herbs & perennials) lend a fresh feel to the space.
Outdoor Kitchen & Dining
Outdoor dining is an activity that many of us would prefer to do without an audience. Why not start with the necessary cookout and entertaining elements as the structural portion of a screen? This sets the dining area apart, creating a cohesive and well-designed private space without screaming “brick wall”. The chimney of this gorgeous fireplace, in combination with the lattice screens against a plant filled background creates a wonderfully cozy place to host intimate gatherings without neighbors peering in. What a great setting to enjoy the fire on cool evenings!
Plan this month for your 2018 landscape make-over and be able to enjoy your new yard by summer time. FarWest’s Landscape Team can help you create the privacy screen of your dreams. Call us: 208-918-0967.

Winter Pet Care Tips
Winter, even with its cold temperatures and snow, is a beautiful time of year; however, it can be tough on our pets, especially for older cats and dogs. Rather they live outside fulltime or they just spend a hour or two outside playing, the following are some helpful tips to make sure that you pet stays happy and comfy all winter long.
• For pets that stay outdoors, provide adequate shelter from the cold wind, rain, sleet, snow and freezing temperatures. A dog (or cat) house should be no larger that three times the size of the pet and the doorway (covered with a flap) should be just big enough for you pet to enter. Keep the shelter a few inches off of the ground and add insulation underneath to help keep your pet warm (make sure that the insulation is sealed away so your pet can’t eat it). Another option is to provide your pet access to your garage via a pet door. If the garage is not heated, you may still need to provide a smaller shelter within to provide adequate warmth for your pet.
• Pets that are kept primarily indoors may not develop a proper winter hair coat. If they are going to be spending more than 15 minutes outside in the cold, consider fitting them with a coat or jacket, especially if you have a smaller, short haired breed.
• Feed a high quality pet food to meet your pet’s increased nutritional needs during the colder weather. Pets kept outside require a larger volume of food in the winter months since keeping themselves warm burns lots of calories. Be sure to provide fresh, unfrozen water for your pet (a heated water bowl works well). Instead of metal bowls, use porcelain so pet’s tongues won’t stick to them.
• Senior pets may need special care during the colder months. If your pet is having difficulty getting up or walking with a stiff gait, contact your veterinarian as there are several medications available that help minimize severe arthritis pain and keep your pet comfortable.
• Continue your pet on year round heartworm flea and tick preventative. Heartworm medications kill immature stages of the heartworm as they travel through the body, but they also kill several other internal parasites as well. Parasites drain blood, protein, and energy from our pets causing an additional burden during the winter months. While ticks are typically dormant now, we see more fleas during the
months of October though January than any other time of the year.
• Antifreeze is lethal to both cats and dogs. It’s sweet tasting and ingesting even a minute amount can prove deadly. If you suspect your pet has ingested antifreeze, contact you veterinarian immediately!
• Double check the de-icing products that you use on your sidewalk and driveway to make sure they are pet safe.
• Remember that cats like to sleep close to warm car engines. Check to see where you outdoor kitty is and honk you horn before starting the car.
Winter is a beautiful time of year and we are often surrounded by the comfort of our family and friends during the holiday seasons. With a little extra attention, you can ensure that your pet is warm, healthy, and comfortable all winter long too!
