W

elcome to the July/August edition of Inside Magazine, the local magazine for Chigwell and Buckhurst Hill. While walking beside a nearby lake, we’ve taken to feeding the birds on the water. And here is a safety warning – we feed them a mix of seeds and meal, not stale bread, for the latter is unsuited to their little tummies. We perform this ritual feeding of the fowl, casting our pellets upon the water’s face, as a way of achieving mindfulness. And here is a language warning – this word is just a cleverclogs word for ‘relaxing’. Or ‘enjoying being outside’. Recently I noticed that seagulls gather, flying in and squawking, then fight ferociously with one another for the right to feed on the feast that we provide. Ironically, by the time that these squabbles are settled, the ducks and swans have hoovered up every last molecule of food. The seagulls swoop down to find the food gone. We scattered another handful of pellets on the lake and fed the ducks and swans while the seagulls battled overhead. It reminded me of so many things.

THE RIBBLESHEAD VIADUCT or Valleys, Views and Viaducts STORY: DAVID YOUNG IMAGES: DAVID YOUNG

A

loyal emissary in 1866 hurried home to his wife and proudly told her of the important task with which the Board had entrusted him. “They’re to build a railway,” he said, “And I’m the man who is to make the deal with the government. A brandnew railway – just to think of it! – to link us with Scotland, running from Settle to the very border at Carlisle!” The government looked kindly on this request. The railway should go ahead. The Midland Railway (Settle to Carlisle) Act was passed in July 1866. The loyal emissary reported back to the Board. “Ah yes,” the head of the Board said. “About that railway malarkey– we won’t be needing that now. We’ve only gone and done a deal with another company, to use their tracks via Shap, so you’d better get that Act stopped. So… thanks. Oh, and well done. Great job, feller.” The head of the Board, you will note, spoke in a strangely 21st century vernacular, and, not surprisingly, precious few people understood him. The Act, it transpired, could not be overturned. The railway had to go ahead. RIBBLESHEAD VIADUCT

SHEEP IN THE SHADOWS OF THE VIADUCT

Now in the 21st century, the trains of 1866 look dated and quaint, although many of us find their images to be somewhat enticing. Yet, for all their antique quirks, these huge old contraptions could reach 60mph, emitting, in their exertions, great plumes of smoke and puffing of steam amidst a general snorting and clanking of labouring pistons. Similarly, modern trains, apart from the weird things found on mountains, can’t climb hills much better than the trains of the 19th century. A train from either era can churn its way across level plains, but confront it with a slight incline and it all but runs out of puff. When the surveyors reluctantly began to plan the path for the new Settle-Carlisle line, they came to a great valley at Ribbleshead, where a train would have to inch down steep slopes to a broad and marshy plain, only to climb an equally steep slope on the other side. “Hmm,” said the surveyors. “We’re going to have to build a huge viaduct. I’d say it’s going

to be about 440 LAMBS IN FRONT OF VIADUCT feet long and 104 feet high at its highest, off the top of my head.” The top of his head, it’s worth noting, was somewhere under a gigantic stovepipe hat. “And it’ll cost the company a pretty penny. Somewhere, off the top of my very high head, in the region of £340,000. I’d say that that’s the equivalent of £34 million by 2022, since you didn’t ask. But I kind of feel that I should mention it randomly.” Work started in July 1870. The workers, who numbered more than 2,000, lived in camps on the surrounding marshland. Hundreds of lives were lost during the construction of the viaduct. The original plan for 18 arches was revised in 1872 to extend to 24. The work was done by the end of 1874. The single track was used for the first time by a passenger train in August 1875. The line opened fully in May 1876. The Ribbleshead Viaduct is now a Grade II listed structure, and forms an integral part of the scenery at the head of Ribblesdale. Whernside, the highest mountain in the Yorkshire Dales, rears its long spine to the west of the valley, its lower slopes criss-crossed with drystone walls between which white sheep graze on the grass, whilst higher up there stretched the bleak moors of the upper slopes. To the south

Ingleborough rears its flattened head in silhouette. Beneath the old arches of the viaduct sheep seek shelter from the sun or the rain. In the 1980s, the line was scheduled for closure, due to financial loss. But a local active campaign saved the railway and its use increased to render it more viable, enabling the government to reverse their stance without losing face. Further renovations at the end of the 1980s and again in the 1990s kept the line and the viaduct in good working order to the extent that freight trains began to use the track, thereby further enhancing the line’s finances. Trains carrying local stone and timber could avoid congestion on the nearby mainline, and nothing enhances a view of a viaduct more than a train en route for somewhere. So thanks for that, guys.
