W

elcome to the January/February edition of Inside Magazine, the local magazine for Chigwell and Buckhurst Hill, and a Happy New Year to you all. I was finally spat out of the education system at the age of 21. (I didn’t get a degree – I was just really bad at O-levels.) Ill prepared for the world outside, I nevertheless struggled through 40-odd years of work (and some of these really were odd). I remember that first day at work, uncertain and unworldly, unable to believe that I’d make it through life. Like finding oneself in the deep end of a pool, the distant safety of shallow waters seemed impossibly out of reach. But voices on the side kept calling ‘keep your head down and swim, boy!’ And swim I did, for forty very odd years, splashing and flailing towards the security of the ladder at the far end, my arms and legs aching with fatigue. Then, suddenly, I reached the end. I could climb from the pool. The ladder was beside me, leading to the dry tiled floor. Yet I chose to flail and splash a little longer. With security finally available, I chose instead to stay in the water. Back when I was young, I would have given anything to grasp that ladder. But now that the shallow end was underfoot, I elected to stay in the water. Retirement offers all the relaxation that I once craved, yet I stay a while longer in the labour pool. We yearn for what we cannot have and spurn the same thing when it makes itself available.

Luxury Private Villa for rent in Spain at sensible prices, with free use of our car that greets you at the airport

Lots of luggage?

No problem

Located close to wonderful beaches on the sun-drenched Costa Blanca just an hour from Alicante Airport, in the Moraira region, and about £200 per week cheaper than comparable properties. (Even cheaper than a cottage in Cornwall)

The story so far... We bought the villa in late 2018 after battling months of red tape. We didn’t buy it to get rich, but wanted to create something that would be truly special for us, our friends, and for local people to enjoy (I live in Buckhurst Hill), making best use of our retirement pot. We thought of things that annoy us when going away; the first was arriving to pick up a rental car, only to be told we have to get a bus 15 minutes away, and then fill in endless forms. So we decided to make no charge for Bertie, our wonderfully reliable and fuel-efficient automatic car, and garage it close to the airport, delivered when you get off the plane. Then we considered having to rent parasols and sunbeds at the beach, which for a family of 6 adults can cost €100 per day (parasol and sunbed each), so we provide everything to take down there. This attitude is everywhere at the villa; a real home from home with everything catered for.

For a brochure with prices, please email: marilyn.smyth@ntlworld.com

Our villa has 3 double bedrooms, 3 bathrooms and a 10 metre pool Rates start from £100 per night, depending on season Check out our 360 Virtual Tour to get a real flavour of what it’s like, visit

NEWSPAPERS

or Caxton, Commuters and the Kardashians STORY: DAVID YOUNG

R

eaders of a certain vintage may remember an artefact of recent years, whereon were printed certain stories of political shenanigans, sporting achievements, and facts relating to the size of the posterior of someone called Kim Kardashian. The artefact was produced every day of the week, and was called – and this will sound strange to a young audience – a ‘newspaper’ – so called because stuff loosely known as ‘news’ was printed on stuff correctly known as ‘paper’. This newspaper was subsequently used to wrap round fish and chips, the cheap ink, presumably, lending to the batter an extra level of flavour. Or the ‘newspaper’ might be put beneath lino, in older houses, so that residents might read how Tottenham Hotspur did in 1961. FYI, they did ok. Once, a commuter train would be a wall of these creations fanned across rows of suited bodies, a curtain of Daily Telegraphs where now there is but a wall of I-pads and phones. Or the newspaper might disguise Daddy at breakfast, to shield him from the squabbling infants. In later years, women were allowed to read ‘newspapers’,

ACTA DIURNA 8

086_IM_CBH_PUB_JANFEB2... page 8

THE DAILY COURANT as long as they didn’t form opinions of their own. Nowadays, these ‘newspapers’ are becoming less popular. Instead, we now have Facebook, and stuff like that, wherein the curious (and very curious) can delve until they find a fact that suits them, where once they might have had to depend on authority and experts to enlighten them. So where did this ‘newspaper’ come from? Were they always around? Were they always obsessed with trivia? I decided to find out. Turns out, as with so many things, including walls and baths and stuff, the Romans did it first. The immensely popular Acta Diurna, or Acts of the Day, was engraved on metal and stone and displayed around Ancient Rome, although, unbelievably, they never wrote about the Kardashians. In 16th century Venice, gazettes were produced on single folded sheets, on a weekly basis. They were called ‘Avvisi’ which translates to ‘Notices’, which is a good description, but not really funky. Still, historians will struggle to find any in-depth coverage of the Kardashians. If we define a newspaper as a publication that is periodic, and keeps abreast of current affairs in a succinct way, then it is fair to say that the first to be produced was in Strasbourg in 1609, where Johann Carolus, a writer and the owner of a printshop, produced ‘Relation’. But what of our sleepy shores, here in Blighty? How did the Daily Sport evolve from these historical documents? And, more importantly, why?

As any schoolchild knows, Caxton brought the printing press to England in 1476, and, in due course, papers with news in them were being produced. I won’t dignify them by calling them newspapers – and that judgmental attitude applies to much of the modern era. But they didn’t gain popularity in a population most of whom could not read. They preferred to heed the town crier when it came to checking out the latest developments in local matters (and the equivalent of celebrity gossip – like what the Lord of the Manor was up to). It's highly debatable as to what was the first British newspaper. The turbulence of the English Civil War saw both sides producing propaganda, using state-of-the-art print processes to say how brilliant they were, and what a bunch of losers the other lot were. These days, of course, such partisanship could never masquerade as news, thankfully. In 1665, HMSO first published ‘The London Gazette’, which, in an early example of outsourcing, was produced in Oxford to avoid the plague. Pepys was a fan of this newspaper, because, he said, it had no folly in it. Don’t know what he’d have made of us now. The Gazette is still going strong. The Daily Courant is generally recognised as the first British newspaper. The editor, Elizabeth Mallet, strove to be impartial in the paper’s coverage, maintaining that readers could be intelligent enough to form their own opinions. The Times is the oldest daily newspaper, of the current crop, first appearing in 1785. The Observer is the longest standing of our Sunday papers, dating from 1791. The Daily Mirror is the longest surviving tabloid, dating from 1903. The Daily Sport gave up the ghost in 2011. Yay. Which of these you choose to read is up to you. I’d never be judgmental.

WOODFORD AND DISTRICT CENTRE NATIONAL TRUST

Dear Members and friends of the Woodford & District centre of the NT. We have to bring to your attention that we are finding it very difficult to continue, due to insufficient committee members & lack of offers of help to arrange summer or winter outings. Appeals have been made on several occasions for support but none have come so far. Working as a team, the committee’s tasks include arranging visits, trips and speakers and a variety of administrative duties. Sadly, if we do not receive any offers of support by our AGM in April, we will have to seriously consider the closure of our centre, which would be a tragedy. So if you feel that you could benefit the community, this is your opportunity, we’re sure we could use your talent!
