W

elcome to the January & February edition of Inside Magazine, the local magazine for Chigwell and Buckhurst Hill. Best wishes to all of our readers for 2021. It’s got to be an improvement on 2020, which, for me, meant lockdown (bad) and retirement (good). Now lockdown gave us all great opportunities to not do loads of inventive things – to not start baking, not start online studies, and not take up pilates. I, for one, was able to not do all sorts of exciting things. So how much more thrilling, then, is this new adventure in my life, my retirement? Many people have expressed their delight, with such kind remarks as “Thank Heavens he’s retired”, and, poignantly, “Who was he?” And now, at last, I have the chance to not do all sorts of things. There are lots of exciting groups and clubs for me to not join. Courses for me to not do. Hobbies to not take up. Oh what a thrilling period, to not do any of the things I didn’t want to do in the first place. I’ll be sure to let you know how I don’t get on.

David Young

RAVELLO ON THE AMALFI COAST or Villas, Vertigo and Wagner STORY: DAVID YOUNG IMAGES: DAVID YOUNG

I

’m not the most hilarious bloke in the world. I’ve got two decent stories, and one of them isn’t funny, and the other one isn’t true. I’m hopeless at dinner parties, unless the topic turns to lithographic offset printing (unlikely) or the Amalfi Coast. This is why, at dinner parties, I’m likely to be caught saying “Oh, that reminds me of when I worked in offset printing…” “How can the fate of white rhinos remind you of printing?” my wife frequently objects. “Well, it goes back to when I was holidaying on the Amalfi Coast.” “Go on then, tell it,” my wife says with resignation, because she’s heard the unfunny story a thousand times before. INFINITY TERRACE

VILLA CIMBRONE 8

074_IM_CBH_PUB_JANFEB2... page 8

We were on a coach, driving inland from Amalfi itself towards Ravello, on a vertiginous country lane of terrifyingly steep hairpins. At each bend, the driver let out a long melodious toot (it’s Italy) on his horn and swung the coach through the ridiculous corners. Scared but awestruck at his dexterity, we settled to enjoy the ride. Then, between steep walls, on a narrow stretch, we met an oncoming coach. Each bus inched cautiously forward, lurching us in our seats, until, ‘prang’, the giant wing mirror snapped against the wall and fell to the tarmac. A helpful passenger promptly alit and picked up the broken mirror. “Put it with the others,” the driver said with disinterest, pointing at a pile of broken wing mirrors at his side. That’s the story. It’s unfunny but true. I’ll tell you the funny one that is untrue at a future date. (Untrue.) Ravello, when you get there, perches on a hillside above the Amalfi Coast, amidst fields and olive groves, on rolling slopes that are dotted with old villages. But Ravello itself is a tourist destination, famous for its two villas which sit at either end of the lazy village like grandiose bookends guarding a shelf of tawdry paperbacks.

become neglected and the villa was deteriorating. A botanist called Sir Francis Neville Reid came to Ravello in 1851, and, overwhelmed by the views, bought the villa. Don’t we all know that feeling? You see a rotting palace in Italy and, darn it, you just have to buy the thing. This impulse has seen me buy many a villa, or at least a postcard. Reid did up the villa and the gardens like a good chap, and Villa Rufolo has been on the tourist circuit ever since. Wagner visited in 1880, and was so delighted by the gardens that he imagined them to be the setting for Klingsor’s garden in his last opera, ‘Parsifal’. He stayed on to write the opera’s second act. But before Sir Francis tamed the Mediterranean wilderness with his Scottish sense of order, the villa had a history of its own. It was built in the 13th century. Boccaccio’s Decameron, from 1353, has a story about Villa Rufolo. I really must get round to reading it. (Untrue.) The villa grew to be one of the grandest along the Amalfi Coast. Stories grew of hidden treasure and stuff. The King of Naples visited in the 14th century but we don’t know if the coach lost a wing mirror, unfortunately. Meanwhile, on the other side of Ravello, lies Villa Cimbrone. The villa is a private hotel but the gardens are open to the public, and one is led by pergolas and wisteria, temples and statues, along the Viale dell’Immenso (Alley of Immensity) to the Terrazza dell’Infinito (Terrace of Infinity). You’ll notice a hint of hyperbole in these names. You won’t find ‘Reasonably pretty path’ or ‘Quite nice garden’ in Ravello. The terrace is a belvedere 1200 feet above the sea. Some very stern marble busts guard the edge, or else they’re daring you to come closer. Again, the villa and gardens were preserved by a British Victorian, this time Lord Grimthorpe, who doesn’t sound very Italian at all. They probably called him Signore dell'eternità (Lord of Eternity). The villa itself is 11th century. It’s had its share of famous visitors. The Bloomsbury Group hung out here. Churchill, E M Forster and D H Lawrence were all visitors. Greta Garbo eloped to the villa in 1938, hoping to marry Leopold Stokowski, and thus achieving celebrity status in the tabloids of the time, which she must have just loved. Oh, and I’ve been there too. Three times. But no plaques. Yet. (True.)

RAVELALO VILLAGE

At one end stands Villa Rufolo, where an archway leads from the heat and the bustle of the piazza. The shade seems to quell the noise as much as the heat. Before you are the gardens, colourful and scented, high above the Bay of Salerno, famous for the geraniums that sit in front of the Moorish towers. By the nineteenth century, these gardens had
