elcome to the November & December edition of Inside Magazine, the local magazine for Chigwell and Buckhurst Hill. I’ve finally retired from my job in Epping Forest. Mainly, I did this out of consideration towards my wife, who is trying to work from home. “Do you know what I’d really love?” she said recently. “I’d just love you to spend even more time sitting on the sofa and shouting at contestants on Tipping Point. Really can’t get enough of that.” So I retired. This doesn’t mean that I’ve retired from my work at Inside Magazine. It’ll take more than a touch of grey hair for you to be rid of me. In fact, this edition will see my 100th article. We were going to mark the occasion with a big office rave, but somebody (no names mentioned, Trev) forgot the Twiglets so we called it off. Trevor had to be home early, and I didn’t fancy all that lemonade on my own. Anyway, if you are interested in looking back at some of my articles, then, frankly, you need to get out more. Here’s to the next 100. And, Trevor, try to remember the Twiglet. (I thought you said he was going – Trev.)

MONKEY WORLD IN DORSET or Spain, Cigarettes and Squirrel Monkeys STORY: DAVID YOUNG IMAGES: DAVID YOUNG

N

othing so depresses as the cruelty of humans. But, conversely, nothing so raises the spirits as the kindness that they can display. Both sides of human nature can be seen at Monkey World in Dorset.

Once upon a time, there was a very nice couple called Simon and Peggy Templer. In 1978, they heard about something which upset them a bit. African baby chimpanzees were being smuggled into Spain to be sold to photographers. This enabled said photographers to take hilarious pictures of tourists posing with chimps. Such fun. And the resulting 6x4 polaroid would be well worth the effort. To ensure that everything ran smoothly, the chimps were beaten and drugged to calm them down. They would be starved and, in the absence of a diet, their teeth being clearly superfluous, said teeth would be knocked out to prevent any nasty biting of the lovely tourists. When they got too old to be cute, which, as with humans, coincided with puberty, they would, like humans, get a bit uppity. Thus, unlike humans, they were slaughtered. This seemed to upset the Templers, which is not too surprising. They worked with authorities to rescue the chimps and rehouse them in a specially built home. So successful was their enterprise that they soon had about forty chimpanzees. This was too many for the home. RING-TAILED LEMUR

8

072_IM_CBH_PUB_NOVDEC2... page 8

CHIMPANZEE By one of those twists of fate, they met Jim Cronin, who also didn’t really see the funny side of chimps-in-dresses. Cronin had long harboured an ambition to establish a rescue centre for primates. He proposed housing the Templers’ chimps in a sanctuary in Dorset. Monkey World was opened in 1987. The primates that live in Monkey World don’t wear skirts or dresses. They don’t smoke fags or drink out of teacups. But don’t fret. It’s still a heart-warming place. The setting is in woodland, a home to 250 primates from more than 20 different species. They work with agencies from around the world to stop illegal trading. There are apes that were abused as pets, or used in labs, or circuses. Some have been orphaned by the bush meat trade. Each has a back-story and Monkey World works to rehabilitate their animals and to instil in them the natural behaviour which has been denied them by their previous owners. Would you like to hear some stories? You’d better say yes. ‘Cos they’re you’re going to get them anyway.

ORANG UTAN Take Oshine. Oshine is a female orang-utan. She was captured while still young in Indonesia and was sent to South Africa as a pet. When she was seven years old, she became too large and unruly for the house. Couldn’t see that one coming, huh? So she was stuck in an enclosure, and was fed a diet of sweets and processed food, which made her obese. Surprised? At Monkey World, she has reached her appropriate weight, and now socialises with the youngsters around her. Wanna meet Peppa? Peppa is a female chimpanzee who had spent her early years as a prop for a photographer in Spain. She tends to sit on the fringes of her group, as she is not a highranking chimp. Because one of the gimmicks of the photographer was to get Peppa to smoke a cigarette, she still takes a straw and pretends to roll it into a fag and to have a puff. One must admire the training regime of the photographer to imbue such a skill.

You want some more? Well here’s some more. How about a squirrel monkey. Amongst the group are three who were rescued during a police raid on some drug dealers, where they were kept in squalor. One was blind in one eye from an injury. Most of the squirrel monkey colony have come from the British pet trade. Last but not least. Introducing Kim and Tien. Monkey World is not a breeding zoo. They need to keep space available for future rescues. But sometimes…you know… stuff happens. Kim and Tien are golden-cheeked gibbons, both born at Monkey World. One doesn’t want to anthropomorphise (mainly because it takes too long to type on this fakatka laptop) but oh boy are they cute together. They’re in lo-o-ove. Very nice too. They don’t pass judgement at Monkey World. They leave that to the visitors to decide for themselves. The best and worst of humanity are here and it makes for a heart-warming day out. Or a chilling one.

Our Financial Adviser Colin Tatham discusses

Equity Release Home Sweet Home If you are retired or planning for your retirement, don’t ignore your biggest asset! If you are a homeowner, aged 55 or over and a UK resident, then you could release a lump sum from your property through Equity Release. What is Equity Release? Put simply, Equity Release allows you to release some of your home’s value as a taxfree lump sum or regular income without having to sell the property. How much equity you can release is dependent on factors such as your age and the value of your home, and of course, how much money you require. The money you release is tax free and can be spent on anything you choose, for example, home improvements, the holiday of a lifetime, or even an early inheritance for your children or grandchildren. Do you have an Interest-Only Mortgage that is coming to an end? Equity Release can also be used to repay an interest-only mortgage, where you have no other means of repayment or if your investment (e.g. endowment plan) is not sufficient to cover the debt. Do you already have an Equity Release loan? Interest rates have reduced significantly over the past few years, and you might be able to reduce your interest roll-up by moving to a new lender, allowing you to leave more equity to your loved ones! Here is an example of how this could work for you: Mr Green owed £100,000 to his existing equity release lender when he first spoke to us, and with interest being charged at 6%, his balance was ready to increase by a further £6,000 in the following 12 months. However, by moving him to a new lender, we were able to reduce his interest rate to only 3%, resulting in a saving of around £3,000 in the

November & December 2020

072_IM_CBH_PUB_NOVDEC2... page 25

first year alone. In less than 12 months he had saved approximately the same amount as the penalty fee incurred for paying off his old scheme early, and now that his new scheme is accruing interest at only half the rate, there will be more left behind for his loved one’s when he eventually dies. Do you need to make repayments? Most Equity Release schemes have no element of monthly repayment whatsoever for the borrower, and the outstanding loan plus interest accrued is usually repaid from the sale value of your home on death, or if you move into long term care. However, if you prefer to repay the loan, there are various options available including regular and ad-hoc payments, your Financial Adviser will be able to help you choose the most suitable option based on your current and future needs. Providers who are registered with the Equity Release Council offer a ‘no negative equity guarantee’, which means that the outstanding amount owed can never exceed the value of your home, thereby offering you further peace of mind. Releasing equity from your home is a big decision and there are many things to consider before deciding if Equity Release is right for you. If you would like to find out more, please contact Colin Tatham on 020 8524 8521 for a free initial consultation. DGS Independent Financial Advisers Ltd are members of the Equity Release Council.

Equity released from your home will be secured against it.

LOCAL CHARITY NEEDS A TRUSTEE TREASURER Voluntary Action Epping Forest (VAEF) is looking for a Trustee Treasurer to manage the charity’s financial affairs and work with the Board to help steer the organisation through challenging times. The Treasurer should have experience in finance (ideally a practising or retired accountant), as well as the ability to communicate financial information to those who may have little or no financial background. The charity will also be looking for somebody that can oversee and ensure that the financial affairs of VAEF are conducted within legal requirements, accounting conventions and good practice. Strong problem-solving skills would also be an asset. The new Treasurer will work as part of a team with the appointed auditor, the Board of Trustees, Chief Officer and Finance Officer and play an important role in promoting and sustaining the financial viability, growth and development of VAEF. The Board meets every six weeks – virtually at the moment and for the foreseeable future. Voluntary Action Epping Forest (VAEF) provides advice, information and development support to the community, including gardening and handyman services, benefit support for the housebound, home safety and befriending. Local voluntary groups are also assisted with fund raising, volunteer recruitment and regular information. Adults with learning disabilities are supported with a range of activities and independent living skills. The charity is also involved in a number of new and exciting projects such as digital learning for older people.
