elcome to the September & October edition of Inside Magazine, the local magazine for Chingford and Highams Park. On the whole, I’d say that addiction was not a good thing. Contentious, I know. Controversial, sure. But by and large I think that you’ll agree. And yet there is a swathe of society who wear their addictions like badges of honour. I mean the phone and coffee lot. “Oh God, I couldn’t live without my mobile!” This seems somewhat de trop when one considers the hundreds of millennia that we survived before we’d even heard of Candy Crush. “Ooh, I can’t operate without at least five espressos in the morning!” In contrast, you wouldn’t say, “I feel awful until I’ve dosed myself up with heroin!” You wouldn’t say “I have to have a bet on Paddy Power before I even get dressed in the morning!” When you’ve found out who decides which addictions are cool, please let me know. Now I’ve got to have my hit of Rice Krispies before I expire.

THE SUN

or Heatwaves, Headlines and Helium STORY: DAVID YOUNG

T

here is a hilarious standard gag that you can chuck into a conversation at any time, to prove your extreme grasp on humour and simultaneously on the zeitgeist. And that is to bemoan the British weather, and more especially its summer. So, even though the ten hottest years have all been in this century, and even though England has had heatwave after heatwave, a really witty thing to say would be “Ooh…flipping typical English summer eh?” or “Can’t wait to sit beside the pool in Spain.” The implication of these wonderful jokes seems to be that it would be swell if we could only see just a bit more sun.

Well, I say, careful what you wish for. Because, in a mere 5 billion years, the Sun will have expanded to such an extent that it will envelop the Earth, your home, and, significantly, Spain. Tabloid headlines, as temperatures reach several thousand degrees, will be forced to plumb new depths of inanity. How can that be? How does he know so much? Science, my friends. Science.

A HOLE IN THE CORONA 8

ULTRAVIOLET IMAGE OF THE SUN For centuries, the Sun was seen as just some vague ball of fire that was burning stuff, somewhere in the sky. It was the discovery of dinosaur and other fossils that challenged this belief. These finds, and new-fangled ideas about evolution, meant that the Earth was a lot older than people had thought. It had to be hundreds of millions of years old. And the Sun must be even older. If the Sun were some great big bonfire of coal or wood or oil, burning in oxygen, it would have run out of fuel after a few thousand years. Some other explanation was needed for its brightness and heat production. In the early 20th century, nuclear reactions were beginning to be understood. They don’t consume oxygen in the process, and produce vastly more heat and light from a small amount of fuel. This has its pros and cons, depending how you look at it. On the one hand, mankind suddenly had a new and devastating weapon. On the other hand, we eventually had a new source of power. When the Sun formed, it was about 70% hydrogen. Extreme temperatures – and we’re talking 100 million degrees – yes, hotter than Spain – although I’ve never been to Spain or the Sun - will cause hydrogen atoms to fuse together to produce helium. In this process, a tiny amount

But before this, our world will have changed a lot. 3.5 billion years from now, the Sun will be 40% brighter. Oceans will boil. Ice caps will melt. Life will not survive. And then it gets worse. 5 billion years from now, the Sun will turn into a red giant, which is nowhere near as much fun as it sounds. Its core will shrink, but its outer layers will expand. Firstly it will consume Mercury and Venus. Good riddance – who needs Mercury, huh? Never took to it. But then it will consume the Earth, SUNSET IN EPPING FOREST before wandering onwards and © DAVID YOUNG outwards to destroy Mars, just to show off really. Makes you think… of mass is released as energy. This shoots to the Sometimes – and we’ve all been there – one looks surface of the Sun and then out into space. The at the stars and contemplates one’s smallness and Sun gets through 500 million tons of hydrogen one thinks to oneself “What’s the flipping point?” per second. This nihilistic view will become more pertinent in By analysing other objects in the solar system, the distant future. There will be a brief flurry of scientists calculate that the Sun is about 4.6 headlines going “Phew - what a scorcher!” and, billion years old. By studying the life cycles of possibly, “As hot as Mercury!” but then the other stars, it is believed that the Sun will have printing presses (or e-readers) will all melt and we used up its hydrogen in about 5 billion years’ will all be vaporised and there will be no planet or people. Anyway, have a nice day. Turned out nice, time. didn’t it?

A NEW ERA WANSTEAD VINTAGE “Everything you need for your home and wardrobe” W anstead Vintage are delighted to announce that we will be holding our Christmas fair on Saturday 19th December. A perfect seasonal celebration as we mark our 10th Anniversary! The Fairs are now under new management and are run by Karen Stuckey, an event organiser and vintage trader. We are really fortunate to be able to hold these Fairs in Wanstead United Reformed Church, a beautiful Grade II listed, recently refurbished building, which is incredibly light and airy with the sun streaming through the huge colourful stained glass windows. White walls and blonde wooden floors, which were renovated this year, balance the decor and provide a serene and calm atmosphere. A pleasure to both sell and shop in! Any fair is only as good as its sellers and Wanstead Vintage consistently has the best around. The Church has two large halls which are both filled with a wonderful array of stallholders, some of whom have been regulars at this event and been with us since we began. You could say they were part of the family. They will be selling, as they always do, a huge variety of genuine vintage items:- homewares, furniture, jewellery, handbags, posters, silver, fashion, textiles, haberdashery, vinyl, books. ‘Yule’ bound to be able to pick up some last minute gifts. There’s something here for absolutely everyone at this special time of year!

There’ll be vintage mirrors in all shapes as sizes to adorn any room in the house. French ‘accoutrements’ to add that ‘je ne sais quoi’ to your surroundings. Handbags to complete any outfit. Haberdashery to restyle your treasured favourites and textiles to grace and furnish. Added to that silverware and home furnishings to amaze, accentuate and flatter your lifestyle, and fashion and jewellery to turn heads. The list is endless… You really will find everything you need for your home and wardrobe. Wanstead Vintage takes place three times a year and on the run up to December 19th we will be sharing tasters of the kind of items we’ll be featuring at the Fair on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter.

In these unprecedented times we will of course have measures in place to keep everybody safe and we will adhere to the latest governmental advice regarding safe distancing.

Our Financial Adviser Colin Tatham discusses

Equity Release Home Sweet Home If you are retired or planning for your retirement, don’t ignore your biggest asset! If you are a homeowner, aged 55 or over and a UK resident, then you could release a lump sum from your property through Equity Release. What is Equity Release? Put simply, Equity Release allows you to release some of your home’s value as a taxfree lump sum or regular income without having to sell the property. How much equity you can release is dependent on factors such as your age and the value of your home, and of course, how much money you require. The money you release is tax free and can be spent on anything you choose, for example, home improvements, the holiday of a lifetime, or even an early inheritance for your children or grandchildren. Do you have an Interest-Only Mortgage that is coming to an end? Equity Release can also be used to repay an interest-only mortgage, where you have no other means of repayment or if your investment (e.g. endowment plan) is not sufficient to cover the debt. Do you already have an Equity Release loan? Interest rates have reduced significantly over the past few years, and you might be able to reduce your interest roll-up by moving to a new lender, allowing you to leave more equity to your loved ones! Here is an example of how this could work for you: Mr Green owed £100,000 to his existing equity release lender when he first spoke to us, and with interest being charged at 6%, his balance was ready to increase by a further £6,000 in the following 12 months. However, by moving him to a new lender, we were able to reduce his interest rate to only 3%, resulting in a saving of around £3,000 in the

September & October 2020

069_IM_CHP_PUB_SEPOCT2... page 23

first year alone. In less than 12 months he had saved approximately the same amount as the penalty fee incurred for paying off his old scheme early, and now that his new scheme is accruing interest at only half the rate, there will be more left behind for his loved one’s when he eventually dies. Do you need to make repayments? Most Equity Release schemes have no element of monthly repayment whatsoever for the borrower, and the outstanding loan plus interest accrued is usually repaid from the sale value of your home on death, or if you move into long term care. However, if you prefer to repay the loan, there are various options available including regular and ad-hoc payments, your Financial Adviser will be able to help you choose the most suitable option based on your current and future needs. Providers who are registered with the Equity Release Council offer a ‘no negative equity guarantee’, which means that the outstanding amount owed can never exceed the value of your home, thereby offering you further peace of mind. Releasing equity from your home is a big decision and there are many things to consider before deciding if Equity Release is right for you. If you would like to find out more, please contact Colin Tatham on 020 8524 8521 for a free initial consultation. DGS Independent Financial Advisers Ltd are members of the Equity Release Council.

Equity released from your home will be secured against it.
