elcome to the July & August edition of Inside Magazine, the local magazine for Chingford and Highams Park. Every cloud has a silver lining, and there are certainly downsides to the coronavirus pandemic. But the lockdown gave our family ample opportunity to reassess our lives. Firstly, we were able to devote more time to the twins, Trevor and Trevorina. Home-schooling was daunting at first, but we soon settled down and were delighted at how quickly our little bundles of joy (3 next year – my, how they grow!!) were able to master the rudiments of particle physics. Trevor proved a dab hand when it came to learning Mandarin and Trevorina never sounded so good on the balalaika!! Meanwhile, we have recarpeted the whole house with homegrown hemp mats woven on a handmade loom that we knocked up!! The garden is, of course, a boon, and Jacintha made herself useful by building a series of moats from which we harvest hydroelectric power. Classic Jas! And finally, of course, a big thanks to the cook, the gardener, the butler, the nanny and the chauffeur, without whom much of the above would have been impossible, and isolation might have seemed a bit gloomy. We are all in it together!! Stay safe and isolate yourself with just a skeleton staff!!

WHERE OUR NAME CAME FROM or Engla londe, Englaland, Eng-er-land STORY: DAVID YOUNG

S

ome there are to whom the dinner party is an opportunity to meet with friends, enjoy their company, swap tales, and so on. Humbug. Others there are who see a gathering as a chance to prove their superiority to everybody else at the table. I was enjoying a delightful evening displaying my wisdom and wit, one day, when a dear friend piped up, at my elbow, “Of course, I don’t suppose you know when or why Ulan Batur got its name.” This came a propos of nothing, out of the blue, quite uncalled for. I’d been holding the room in the palm of my hand – it was some story about the origins of oven cleaners – and now the dear friend had shoved me from my pedestal.

SUTTON HOO HELMET 8

THE VENERABLE BEDE

“I neither know nor care,” I replied smugly. “And so, these oven cleaners…” “Ulan Batur,” my friend interrupted, “was founded in 1639 and its name means ‘Red Hero’.” “So pleased for it,” I continued. “Anyway, I bet you don’t know when, or why, or how England got its name.” I sat back, waiting for the inevitable applause. “Do you?” my friend countered. “Excuse me,” I said, a tad flustered. “I must powder my nose, all of a sudden.” Whereupon I blundered towards the bathroom, fumbling for my phone. And there I sat, beneath an untrained Spider Plant, to do my research before returning to the dining room and tucking in my shirt as a clever way of disguising the true motive behind my abrupt exit. I amazed the other guests for the next half hour with a dazzling display of knowledge as to the name of our green and pleasant land. When was it first known as England? The history

For some reason, they often left helmets lying around. Maybe they were forgetful, like obtuse Angles. A strange feature of naming lands is that the naming is seldom done by the inhabitants. They just live there. It’s ‘here’. It falls to outsiders, who need to define a place, to give it a name. Hence our country was referred to by those overseas, such as Celts in France, as the land of Angles. (Here again, schoolchildren become confused, for this is not s Sci-Fi world of protractors and compasses). Africa was named by Greeks – from an odd word that means ‘not cold’. ‘Engla londe’ became ‘Englaland’. I guess that sheer laziness gave us the shorter version of ‘England’. One of the earliest appearances of this familiar name comes from Canute, who styled himself ‘King of England’. It remained thus for a thousand years or so, until football fans changed it so that it would fit into a chant. I undid my shirt at this point, raised my glass and began shouting “Eng-er-land, Eng-er-land, Engerland.” I looked around, but, to my surprise, everybody had gone, either to their homes or to Ulan-Batur. KING CANUTE of the name stretches back, and yet it has undergone recent transformations. Football crowds have introduced a middle syllable, so that our country now is known as Eng-er-land. Indeed, in some chants it has become the multisyllabic Eng-er-la-and. But we shall confine our research to the more popular disyllabic version. We begin in the Bay of Kiel, in the Baltic Sea, a part of Germany wedged up close to Denmark. A small peninsula juts into this bay and goes by the name of Anglia. The people of the area were called Angles. This is a well-known fact amongst schoolchildren, who get very confused when their maths teacher says that angles can often be obtuse, are seldom right, but now and then you can get acute angle. In the 5th century, the Angles invaded Britain. Some centuries later, the scholar Bede (who, as you may know was Venerable) referred in his history to ‘Engla londe’. He was using it as a description, effectively calling the island a place invaded by Angles. Another popular fact recalled from schooldays is that there had been subsequent waves of invasions by Saxons. So why had Bede named it after the Angles? The pervasive belief is that the Germans living here were called Anglo Saxons, to differentiate them from, for example, the continental inhabitants of Older Saxony. Our ancestors were the Saxons from the Anglia area. July & August 2020

MERCY SHIPS

delivering vital, free healthcare to people in desperate need

I

n February, I was serving the people of Senegal on board the Africa Mercy, one of the Mercy Ships as a Maxillofacial, Thyroid and Reconstructive surgeon with my wife Hilary, a Minister from the Methodist Forest Circuit in North East London. Within a few weeks of arriving back in the UK, I found myself working overtime in the race against the surge of coronavirus in several London Hospitals. My calling to serve the forgotten poor in developing countries with the Mercy Ships for nearly 20 years now gives me the same motivation and energy to join the battle against this invisible enemy and to keep the NHS from sinking under the surge of COVID19. I am very glad indeed to congratulate everyone in our nation of saving the NHS by adhering to social distancing, staying at home, rigorous personal hygiene, helping one another and not taking the gift of our NHS for granted. We together have prevented an overwhelming tsunami of COVID19 hitting our nation and our NHS. Now the lockdown is easing slowly and cautiously by the government with constant monitoring, testing and tracing to prevent the second peak of the pandemic.

LEO CHENG AND THE THEATRE TEAM 10

THE AFRICA MERCY SAILING AT SEA For nearly 20 years, I have used my annual leave to serve with the Mercy Ships amongst the poorest of the poor in West Africa providing free specialist Maxillofacial, Thyroid and Reconstructive surgery to the forgotten poor. Some of my outreach trips have been accompanied by my wife and our 2 daughters serving desperate patients together as a couple or a family. Mercy Ships operates the largest charity-run hospital ship in the world, delivering free, vital medical and surgical care to some of the world’s least developed countries. This floating hospital is staffed by selfless volunteers, who give their expertise for free to help patients with dental and eye problems, facial deformities like cleft lip and palate, tumours of the head, face, neck, limbs and body, club feet, child-birth injuries, burns and many other deformities and conditions. Since 1978, Mercy Ships has visited 56 countries, providing services worth more than £1.2 billion that have directly helped more than 2.8 million people. We have also trained 45,000 local professionals in their areas of expertise to leave a legacy that lasts. Mercy Ships and COVID19 When COVID19 started to spread round the world, the situation made it impossible for Mercy Ships to continue our field service in Senegal. In line with the measure taken by the President of Senegal and his Ministry of Health, Mercy Ships made the difficult decision to stop our field service and bring the Africa Mercy into dry-dock in Tenerife for early essential annual maintenance. The Africa Mercy is a specialist surgical unit and is not equipped to deal with a highly contagious respiratory infection. Once the maintenance work is carried out and the global situation allows, we will return to Africa and help

strengthen healthcare systems emerging from the pandemic. The Africa Mercy was there for Guinea in 2016 after Ebola swept across West Africa and we will be there for West Africa after COVID19. My work during COVID19 In this COVID19 time, my work at the NHS has not only been challenging but also strangely satisfying to see colleagues working together selflessly to keep the death toll down! Apart from urgent trauma surgery for facial and head injury, my team and I are also providing surgical airway support (tracheostomy) for those seriously ill COVID19 patients in order to facilitate their lung ventilation in COVID19 hospitals (‘hot’ hospitals). At the same time, I continue to offer some cancer surgery in COVID19 free hospitals (‘cold’ hospitals). Donning and operating with Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) have been a learning process as we have to ensure adequate hydration while minimising toilet breaks (tricky at times!), clear articulations to avoid miscommunication with a muffled voice under the FFP3 (N99) mask and visor, alteration of surgical procedure to reduce unnecessary generation of aerosol, extra

Telephone and virtual clinics have become the ‘new norm’ for most of our clinics and patients. Teleconferencing has become a major part of my clinical time connecting with our clinical and management teams, and multidisciplinary cancer team meetings. During this pandemic, the NHS is looking after everyone in the safest way we can, as NHS has generated capacity to deal with this unprecedented health emergency. Despite the regretful mortality reported daily on the news, there are success stories when COVID19 patients left the intensive care unit and walked out of the hospital. Like almost everyone in our nation claps for the NHS and other key workers every week, NHS staff also claps for the recovered patients leaving our hospitals. For instance a grandmother of 3 recently beat coronavirus in time for her 74th birthday. As we have passed the peak of the pandemic, the NHS is working hard to reinstate other urgent surgical and medical services. As John F Kennedy once said that there are two Chinese characters for the word ‘crisis’, the first character is ‘danger’ and the second character is ‘opportunity’. I believe that in almost all walks of life, we all have to adapt to the ‘new norm’ of working with more innovative ways of using the internet for communication and for giving or receiving assistance. In this challenging time of lock down and uncertainties in the economy, employment, travel… etc, I hope and pray that we as citizens of this world will come out of COVID19 more loving and caring towards each other by being generous in helping others within and outside our own community. I am extremely grateful and thankful for the resources and provision of our nation’s free world class NHS, the availability of all basic essential Continued on page 20 ►

REVIEW YOUR FINANCES FOR A SENSE OF WELLBEING In the current climate, there is uncertainty in all our lives with both health and financial concerns. However, while we are all understandably focusing on the here and now, it might be worth using this time to take a step back and review your finances for a sense of wellbeing. A recent survey1 asked people how they think and feel about their financial health, in an attempt to understand the connection between wealth and wellbeing. UKs financial health – In the UK, 45% of respondents said that money is a major cause of stress; this figure increases to 66% with those who had no savings or investments to fall back on. When compared to the global average, the UK population holds fewer market-based investments and is more likely to have no savings or investments. When questioned about financial health, 75% of UK respondents were of the opinion that this meant ‘having little or no debt and being prepared for unexpected events’.

July & August 2020

067_IM_CHP_PUB_JULAUG2... page 17

Lack of knowledge – Amongst younger respondents, a common reason for not investing, was ‘lack of knowledge’ with 49% of millennials agreeing with this, compared to 35% of baby boomers. Of all age groups, 34% stated that a fear of losing everything was preventing them from investing. Financial goals – Setting realistic financial goals, as well as saving or investing towards these, can help you to feel more in control, reduce stress and improve your feeling of financial well-being. It can be difficult to take the first step but talking to a trusted financial adviser can help. In fact, 75% of survey respondents, who use a financial adviser, reported having a positive sense of wellbeing.
