2009- CTH ARHICTECTURE - SUSTAINABLE CONSTRUCTION OF BUILDINGS

HEAVY & LIGHT Morgane Boussard, Epp J채채ger, John Kennedy The project studies heavy and light weight construction, insulation and materials. Our aim is to use local and natural building materials to a great extent. The main issue of the study is wooden constructions and its different design prospects. Also the investigation of the heavy and light weight insulations is part of the this research.

HEAVY-WEIGHT MASSIVE WOOD DESIGN * USED MATERIAL: Local materials found in the surrounding environment, renewable, recyclable, chemical free * Massive wood walls, wood fibre insulation boards, wooden roof shingles, juniper bush envelope * One large opening for enlightening and the other windows are reduced to minimum to control heat loss. * A massive wood construction all around and the inside space for the heat storage.

INSULATION PERFORMANCE WALL PERFORMANCE THICKNESS=0.75m THUS: WALL U-VALUE=0.09 W/m2K FLOOR PERFORMANCE THICKNESS=0.96m THUS: WALL U-VALUE=0.1 W/m2K ROOF PERFORMANCE THICKNESS=0.75m THUS: WALL U-VALUE=0.1 W/m2K THUS: the design fulfils the requirements stated in the brief that the building envelope has a U-value of equal to less than 0.1/m2 K

JUNIPER WALL

MASSIVE WOOD

* JUNIPER BUSH IS A NATURAL MATERIAL, TRADITIONALLY USED IN WEST COAST OF NORWAY IN BARN AND GRANARY CONSTRUCTION. * EXCELLENT RAIN AND WIND PROTECTION * DURABLE AND RENEWABLE * LIFE LENGTH 60-70 YEARS * 1m2 WALL REQUIRES 200 BRANCHES * CHANGES COLOR OVER TIME

* PREFABRICATED WALL ELEMENTS FROM HOLZ100 * NO GLUE OR CHEMISTRY ADDED BECAUSE BY THE DRYING PROCESS OF THE BOARDS THE WOOD IS FORM STABLE AND RESISTANT TO PARASITES * DURABLE AND RECYCLABLE

DOUGLAS SHINGLES * DOUGLAS TREES GROW IN SWEDEN. THIS PARTICULAR SPECIES CAN BE USED WITHOUT ANY PESTICIDES * THEY CAN BE BOUGHT OR EASILY HOME MADE. AND SO CAN BE THERE INSTALLATIONS * NO GLUE NEEDED * THEY HAVE AN EXCELLENT RESISTANCE TO WATER AND DO NOT BEND WHEN THEY DRY

HOMATHERM WOODFLEX PROTECT * CONTAINS OVER 90% BYPRODUCTS * NO TOXINS OR TOXIC EMISSION DURING MANUFACTURE ADDED * EASY TO HANDLE, CUT AND INSTALL * NO RISK FOR SETTLEMENT OVER TIME * DURABLE/LOW MAINTAINED/REUSABLE/RECYCLABLE PERFORMANCE

GRANITE STONES * * * *

NATURAL MATERIAL INFINITE REUSABLE TRADITIONAL BUILDING MATERIAL * STRONG * HIGH HEAT STORING CAPACITY * DURABLE

WOOD FIBER INSULATION BOARDS (THERMOSAFE 040 ULTRA THERM 045) * MANUFACTURES FROM SAWMILLS IN THE BLACK FOREST AREA IN GERMANY AND ENTIRELY FROM RENEWABLE RESOURCES * DURABLE/LOW MAINTENANCE/REUSABLE/RECYCLABLE * NO CHEMICALS, TOXINS ADDED * EASILY TO WORK AND CUT

FOAM GLASS * IT IS A LIGHT WEIGHT EXTREMELY FINE PORED EXPANDED GLASS WITH MILLIONS OF HERMETICALLY SEALED PORES. * FOAMED GLASS MANUFACTURE IS AN EXEMPLARY PROCESS FOR WASTE RECYCLING ON AN INDUSTRIAL BASIS. FOAM GLASS CAN BE MANUFACTURED FULLY OUT OF WASTE GLASS. WITH ONLY A MINIMUM OF VIRGIN ADDITIVES.

LIGHT-WEIGHT TIMBER DESIGN

In contrast to the Heavy-weight Timber Design, the Light-weight Timber office is constructed of light-weight timber products and recycles, rather than solid timber elements etc. The light-weight timber house is designed too have a minimal environmental impact upon the landscape. Conceptually, the building is conceived as a simple timber-clad cube within the landscape. The cube has been punctured in several required positions to provide window openings which give the facades of the building a degree of architectural expression. The windows can be shielded by timber shutters, and in winter the building may appear as a closed timber cube, and in summer can open up to reveal a different appearance. The building is formed almost entirely from pre-fabricated parts which can be installed manually, with minimal recourse to machinery. Structural Insulated Panels, or S.I.Ps are inserted into a light-weight timber frame to create the walls and floors. These precision manufactured S.I.Ps have a depth of 420mm and are filled with a highly efficient insulation that is composed of compressed sawdust which has been naturally treated. Further, the timber structure is composed of smaller timber elements to allow for ease of construction. The foundations are designed to prevent any damage to the existing ground condition.

* PRE-MANUFACTURED ELEMENTS, EASILY TRANSPORTED * BIRCH TREES BE GROWN ON THE SITE OF THE OFFICE TO PROVIDE THE BUILDING WITH THE REQUIRED CLADDING MATERIAL

INSULATION PERFORMANCE WALL PERFORMANCE Thickness= 0.45m Thus: WALL U-VALUE=0.08W/m2K FLOOR PERFORMANCE Thickness= 0.40m Thus: FLOOR U-VALUE=0.09W/m2K ROOF PERFORMANCE Thickness= 0.6m Thus: ROOF U-VALUE=0.08W/m2K Thus: THE DESIGN FULFILS THE REQUIREMENTS STATED IN THE BRIEF THAT THE BUILDING ENVELOPE HAS A U-VALUE OF EQUAL TO OR LESS THAN 0.1W/m2K

The building sits on re-usable steel screw mini-pile foundations within an excavated trench. The removed soil is re-used as the substrate for the SEDUM roof. The building is clad entirely in a sacrificial layer of birch shingles that have been harvested from a birch coppice which would be planted close to the building for the specific purpose of providing a cladding material. When the cladding needs to be replace, the old shingles may be used as fire-wood to heat the office.
