HEAVY & LIGHT Morgane Boussard, Epp J채채ger, John Kennedy The project studies heavy and light weight construction, insulation and materials. Our aim is to use local and natural building materials to a great extent. The main issue of the study is wooden constructions and its different design prospects. Also the investigation of the heavy and light weight insulations is part of the this research.

LIGHT-WEIGHT TIMBER DESIGN
In contrast to the Heavy-weight Timber Design, the Light-weight Timber office is constructed of light-weight timber products and recycles, rather than solid timber elements etc. The light-weight timber house is designed too have a minimal environmental impact upon the landscape. Conceptually, the building is conceived as a simple timber-clad cube within the landscape. The cube has been punctured in several required positions to provide window openings which give the facades of the building a degree of architectural expression. The windows can be shielded by timber shutters, and in winter the building may appear as a closed timber cube, and in summer can open up to reveal a different appearance. The building is formed almost entirely from pre-fabricated parts which can be installed manually, with minimal recourse to machinery. Structural Insulated Panels, or S.I.Ps are inserted into a light-weight timber frame to create the walls and floors. These precision manufactured S.I.Ps have a depth of 420mm and are filled with a highly efficient insulation that is composed of compressed sawdust which has been naturally treated. Further, the timber structure is composed of smaller timber elements to allow for ease of construction. The foundations are designed to prevent any damage to the existing ground condition.

The building sits on re-usable steel screw mini-pile foundations within an excavated trench. The removed soil is re-used as the substrate for the SEDUM roof. The building is clad entirely in a sacrificial layer of birch shingles that have been harvested from a birch coppice which would be planted close to the building for the specific purpose of providing a cladding material. When the cladding needs to be replace, the old shingles may be used as fire-wood to heat the office.
