OUR
MISSION DISCOVER and understand this globally important marine eco-
system through world-class scientific research. PROTECT the long-term future of the species which live here by
translating this knowledge into evidence-based conservation
initiatives and legislation. EDUCATE our partners - local communities, legislations and
visitors - by informing and actively involving them in achieving our
goals for the benefit of all.
DICT DYER ISLAND CONSERVATION TRUST
Founded in 2006 by Wilfred Chivell, the Dyer Island Conservation Trust delivers
unique conservation and research programmes in a fragile marine and critically
important marine eco-system. We strive to protect the largest surviving colonies of
the endangered African Penguin whose numbers are at an all-time low; the
globally important breeding and calving grounds of the Southern Right Whale; and
the world's densest populations of the vulnerable Great White Shark.

RESEARCH GREAT WHITE SHARK POPULATION STUDIES
Invaluable research on great white sharks by marine biologists employed
by Marine Dynamics includes tagging and tracking, behavioural surveys,
wound healing, environmental parameter monitoring; parasite load and
daily observational data contributing to population studies.

as DEEP works with dedicated groups of young learners from a disadvantaged

MARINE POLLUTION
The Fishing Line Bin Project addresses the ever-increasing hazard of discarded
fishing line along our coastlines. This recovery & recycling project is nationwide and
350 collection bins are installed already. Our crew is trained to embark on Marine Disentanglement & Rescue. The Trust,
works closely with the local community, the Department of Environmental Affairs
and CapeNature to disentangle whales and other animals trapped in fishing lines.

THE CAUSE
Today this fragile eco-system is threatened from many directions. These dangers
include declining fish stocks, pollution and coastal development, including a proposed
nuclear power station, all of which put pressure on the future of every species. From our inception, we knew that to successfully address these challenges we had to
improve our understanding of this complex environment and the animals that inhabit it. So we embarked on a decade of rigorous world-class scientific research to obtain the
evidence on which conservation programmes could be developed. In turn, this evidence
is used to influence the public’s attitudes and to drive policy. The Dyer Island Conservation Trust is a self-funded charity. Therefore, this important
work would be impossible without the generosity of our primary partners, many organisations and individuals. WILFRED CHIVELL CEO & FOUNDER
All funds raised through filming projects are directly invested into owner
established non-profit, Dyer Island Conservation Trust.
