With several areas in the Overstrand being named as crime hot-spots, several suburbs, including Westcliff and Voëlklip, have indicated their willingness to establish neighbourhood watches. This follows the establishment and

residents cannot claim that they are fighting crime if they do not look after each other in the first instance. “By looking after each other we become a community that is committed to eradicating crime.” (Read more on P3.) The success of the Onrus Vermont Neighbourhood Watch (OnVerWag) and the resolve of the newly elected executive of the CPF have also

inspired communities to come together in fighting crime. According to Caroline Gabb of OnVerWag, they encourage all holidaymakers and residents to take extra precautions. “Lock your windows and doors if you are not in the immediate vicinity. Lock up if you go for a quick walk or even if you are having a braai around the back. Do not leave valuables where they are

visible through the windows and don’t leave valuables in your cars. Park vehicles on your property if you can, or in well-lit areas. Arm your alarms. Leave outside lights on at night. Report all incidents to the SAPS.” Last week, Eddie met with members of the Zwelihle Neighbourhood Watch (ZNW) to discuss the ways in which they can be assisted.

Michael Sitshixo of the ZNW said their meeting was very productive and that the Hermanus CPF fully understands how rife crime is in Zwelihle. “Besides foot patrols, the answer is to install cameras in the area,” says Michael. “It is rather dangerous for anyone to be patrolling Zwelihle at night, but we are training some volunteers, with the help of the CPF, OnVerWag and AfriForum.”
