N

ow that summer is well on its way, Hermanus is swinging into action for the tourist season. The irst in an impressive line-up of activities this month is the traditional Whale Festival, now in its 24th year, during the irst weekend of October.

Joining hands with the organisers are a handful of dedicated locals who have formed the Whale Fringe Festival and extended the programme by running various events until 10 October. With all the music, comedy, magic, theatre, dance and ilm shows as well as sporting events there will be something for everyone to enjoy.

Wine news features prominently in this issue of VILLAGE EXPLORER, with the Stanford Wine Route becoming the oficial 21st wine route in South Africa. We joined the media launch last month which was a jovial 3-day affair and proved to be a resounding hit with all the invited guests. Turn to page 6 to ind out why a visit to this charming region is a must on your to-do list.

Another wine region that is attracting a lot of attention is the Cape South Coast between Elim and Agulhas, and if you haven’t tasted these distinctive cool-climate wines, the Elim Wine Festival on 10 October provides the ideal opportunity to enjoy the wine riches and warm country hospitality of this unspoilt and rather remote corner of the world. You can read more about Strandveld Vineyards, the host of this year’s festival, on page 11.

October is also Pinotage Month, and if you want to stock your cellar for the festive season, the Wine Village offers another opportunity to do just that with a special offer on this Proudly South African wine, the details of which are on page 5.

Several venues in Hermanus will be participating in the Whale Fringe Fest by presenting live music entertainment, with an array of exciting artists both renowned and up-and-coming.

There will also be classical music, with the Hermanus Pro Musica Choir performing with classical guitarist Nina Fourie-Gouws in St. Peter’s Church on Sunday 4 October at 15:30. Other entertainment includes the Whale of a Comedy Revolution at The Original Deli and Wine Lab and the Celebrate SA Film Festival at the Whale House Museum and Youth Café in Zwelihle. This annual event includes a 10km Cliff Path Night Run from Hermanus New Harbour to Dutchies Restaurant on Grotto Beach, and a 6km Cliff Path Fun Run from The Marine Hotel to Dutchies Restaurant. Park at Grotto Beach and use the shuttle to The Marine and New Harbour, where registration opens at 17:00.

Experience a day of outdoor fun for the whole family and taste outstanding wines from nine inspiring Cape South Coast wineries at the 4th Elim Wine Festival. The event will be hosted this year at Strandveld Vineyards and the other participating wineries are Black Oystercatcher, The Berrio, Dabar, Ghost Corner, The Giant Periwinkle, Lomond, Sijnn and Jean Daneel Wines.

This popular annual event will celebrate its 24th year as the only enviro-arts festival in South Africa during the first weekend of October when thousands of visitors flock to Hermanus to celebrate spring, enjoy the unique natural environment, watch the whales and revel in great music. Also on the programme are great sporting events, theatre and dance, food stalls, quality crafters and children’s entertainment. South Hill wine estate in Elgin hosts a supper & movie evening every Wednesday at their tasting room /restaurant. Drinks are served from 18:30, followed by supper at 19:00 and the movie starts at 20:00 on a big screen with surround sound. On 7 October you can watch Suite Francaise (2014), a romantic drama set during World War II starring Kristen Scott Thomas, Matthias Schoenaerts and Michelle Williams. Saturday 3 October PJ Powers Live Sprokkelster Productions is proud to present a one night only live performance by PJ Powers. T

he Bavarians and Austrians are known for their “gemütlichkeit” which can be roughly translated as easy-going good cheer, and nowhere is this more in evidence than at the world-famous annual Oktoberfest. But if you are unable to make it to Münich this October, rest assured that you need not travel any further than Long Street in Hermanus to experience the Bavarians’ particular brand of jovial hospitality. You can find it right here at our very own Dorf Krug.

Owned by a German couple and managed by well-known local chef Wilna Rautenbach, Dorf Krug opened its doors two years ago and has since built up a loyal following among both visitors and local residents in Hermanus. Even the tourists are in agreement that you will be hard pressed to find a more authentic and lipsmacking Schnitzel or Eisbein anywhere in the German-speaking world than at Dorf Krug.

During the warmer months patrons can look forward to relaxing in the Biergarten with family, friends and dogs (yes, they are pet-friendly) and don’t even have to sweat about parking as there is plenty of space at the back of the restaurant.

What makes a grape a Superhero?

Pinotage, the Superhero of South African grapes was born in 1925. Abraham Izak Perold, the first professor of viticulture at the University of Stellenbosch cross bred Pinot Noir and Hermitage (Cinsaut). Only 4 seedlings in total were harvested. These he planted in the garden of his residence at Welgevallen during 1925.

It was only in 1941, at Elsenburg, that the first Pinotage made it to the barrel.

Assisting Wilna in the kitchen is Gareth Frost, who at only 19 has found a “second home” at Dorf after completing his training at Warwick’s Chef School last year. “When I’m cooking with Wilna it feels like I’m back home in the kitchen with my mom,” he says. “This is the kind of food that I love to eat – homey comfort food full of natural flavour.”

Involved with Dorf Krug right from the start, Wilna says she spent a lot of time trying different recipes and developing the menu. She is not the kind of chef that hides in the kitchen but always comes out to greet her customers, get their feedback and have a chat. “When my customers are happy, I’m happy,” she says.

“It’s very gratifying when they come back time and again to enjoy their favourite dishes.”

These dishes go down a treat with the wide range of German beers that include Erdinger, Paulaner and Schneider beers with a choice between Weiss, Dunkel or Kristal. Dorf Krug offers daily specials at only R49 which must be one of the best deals in town, and during the summer months they will be adding charcuterie and cheese platters to the menu. SA’s youngest wine route comes o f age

ight wine farms in the Stanford area recently joined hands to establish the 21st official wine route in the country – a joyous occasion that was celebrated with an exciting 3-day media launch at the end of September to show visitors just how much the Stanford Wine Route has to offer.

After tasting the area’s exceptional wines and gastronomic delights, and experiencing the warm hospitality and charm of the local producers, the verdict of the invited journalists, wine writers and industry role players was unanimous: the Stanford Wine Route is a hit. Down to earth and unpretentious, the wine farmers and wine makers of this wine route know how to live close to nature and how to have a good time without pomp and ceremony. Although its members take their wine very seriously, this wine route epitomises laid-back country living.

“The idea to establish a wine route has always been on the cards and although this has taken longer than anticipated, we are overjoyed that the plan has come together” said Chairman Tariro Masayiti from Springfontein. “And we are most grateful for the financial assistance provided by the Overstrand Municipality in this regard,” he added.

infancy with only eight members, Sandra feels that expansion is inevitable as more existing wineries join the fray, and more new producers are attracted to the cool climate and unique terroir of the area.

The public launch of the Stanford Wine Route will be held in November. The current members are: Misty Mountains Estate This is the first winery visitors will encounter when travelling from Hermanus on the R43 towards Stanford. The name comes from the fog that rises from the nearby Klein River lagoon and often shrouds the mountains in mist. Of the farm’s 46 hectares, 16 ha are mostly under Sauvignon Blanc and Shiraz vines. The farm also features olive trees and bottles water from its own natural source under the Misty Mountain label.

Exciting new developments are on the cards that include a deli, a cheese factory, a microbrewery and guest accommodation. The tasting room is open 6 days per week, offering wine tasting and cheese platters. The website is currently under construction.

Sir Robert Stanford Estate

Vineyard blocks on granite soils cover the southern slopes of the Klein River Mountains overlooking the valley and benefit from the cool maritime breezes. Approximately 60 hectares of the farm are planted with amongst others Chenin Blanc, Sauvignon Blanc and Shiraz, which are used to produce the farm’s two labels, Sir Robert Stanford and Cutter’s Cove.

Due to owner Jan Malan's environmentally friendly approach to farming, the more than 200 species of fynbos, a bounty of wildlife and vineyards manage to exist in total harmony.

Visitors are welcome to visit the wine shop / tasting room and enjoy a delicious freshly prepared meal at Madré’s Kitchen.

Another key role player in the establishment of the Stanford Wine Route is Sandra Lotz, who has over 30 years’ experience in the wine industry.

It wasn’t difficult for Sandra, who relocated to Sandbaai last year, to recognise the potential of the Stanford area as a destination for wine tourism.

Stanford Hills

“The region has everything that is required of a wine route,” says Sandra. “That includes not only picturesque vineyards and wine tasting facilities but also restaurants and accommodation establishments, all of which are to be found in this area along with unspoilt natural beauty and a quaint historical village."

The original old farmhouse, believed to have been built in 1855 by the founder of the village, became a school for girls and today offers accommodation to visitors, along with five lovingly restored original farm labourer’s cottages. The farm’s popular restaurant and wine tasting facility, The Tasting Room, forms the hub of the farm and is constantly packed with visitors. The chalkboard menu changes daily and the kitchen uses local organic and free-range products wherever possible.

Other tourist destinations in the area include Kleinrivier Cheese farm, Panthera Africa Big Cat Sanctuary and cruises on the Klein River.

The next winery along the R43 is situated about one kilometre before the town of Stanford.

Tradition, conservation and country hospitality rule the day at Sir Robert Stanford Estate.

Established in 1855, the farm used to be the food basket of the area, with the entrepreneur Sir Robert Stanford shipping fresh produce to Cape Town in his own cutter.

Springfontein

This large farm of almost 600ha lies on the opposite side of the Klein River lagoon and stretches all the way to the coast. Springfontein’s German owner Dr Johst Weber purchased the farm in 1994 and the cool, windy Walker Bay climate and limestone soils proved to bring out the best in the Chenin Blanc and Pinotage, the grape varieties they decided to specialize in.

Winemaker Tariro Masayiti and horticulturist/ viticulturist Hildegard Witbooi work side by side to coax the very best grapes from their unique terroir for their selection of handcrafted, award-winning wines. A great attraction at Springfontein is their excellent restaurant run by Michelin starred chef Jürgen Schneider and his partner Suzanne, while the new Springfontein Bar(n) which opened on 1 October, promises a new pairing experience with wine and snacks. The tasting room is open 7 days a week and the farm also offers accommodation in a handful of beautifully decorated cottages. The restaurant is open for dinner from Wednesday to Saturday, and for lunch from Thursday to Sunday.

STANFORD WINE ROUTE Walker Bay Vineyards The rest of the wine farms are situated along the R326 towards Riviersonderend, the first of which is Walker Bay Vineyards, a boutique wine estate which is also home to the Birkenhead Brewery. The ±20 hectares of vines planted on clay-textured soils and benefitting from the prevailing cool winds from the ocean include Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Petit Verdot and Shiraz.

The winery conducts tours of the brewery and offers wine and beer tastings. There is also a pub/restaurant that serves up mouth-watering pub meals as well as spectacular views of the Klein River Mountains. Open Monday to Sunday from 10:00-17:00. Call 028 341 0013 or visit www.walkerbayestate.com.

Vaalvlei This is the smallest producer on the route with a mere 3 hectares under vines. The farm was established in 2005 by Naas Terblanche, a passionate conservationist and winemaker. The vines grow on predominantly sandstone and koffieklip soils and comprise only two cultivars, Sauvignon Blanc and Shiraz. Walker Bay, which can be seen from the vineyards, lends a cool maritime climate to the area which contributes to the production of elegant and classical wines.

The Terblanche family are passionate about their environment and strive to protect the indigenous plants and birds of the region, and in particular the13 frog species that are found in their wetland. Naas not only opted to choose

the endangered Western Leopard Toad for his wine label but also runs a permanent audio visual display in his tasting room.

Raka Continuing up the valley on the R326 brings you to this family-owned cellar which has been producing award-winning wines for more than a decade. Owner Piet Dreyer bought the farm in 1982 and in 1999 established the first vineyards. In 2002 he decided to swap the ocean for the wine industry after spending more than three decades in the fishing industry. He named the farm and its wines after his beloved black fishing vessel, Raka.

The farm is situated in a narrow valley in the Klein River Mountains and the vineyards are planted on diverse soils either side of the Klein River that flows through the valley. Plantings include a wide variety of grape cultivars such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Malbec, Merlot, Shiraz, Mourvédre, Petit Verdot, Pinotage, Sangiovese and white varieties such as Sauvignon Blanc and Viognier. Raka is a family run concern with son Joseph t aking charge of the cellar, son Pieter managing the farm and vineyards, only daughter Jorika looking after the marketing and parents Piet and Elna ever present to entertain visi-

Boschrivier Wines Right next door to Raka is Boschrivier Wines which is family-owned by the third generation of the De Villiers family. Their land comprises two farms, Remhoogte and Boschkloof, and lies at the foot of the picturesque Akkedisberg mountain range bordering the Klein River. The first farm, Remhoogte, hosts the vineyards from which Boschrivier wines are produced and the manor house has been turned into a wine house/coffee shop that is open to the public for wine tasting.

The Bosch River, which runs along the upper part of the farm, was the inspiration for their wine label. In 2001 the first bottle of Boschrivier Shiraz was produced and since then the focus has been on producing a boutique Shiraz of exceptional quality. In 2013 three new wines were added to the range: Rosé, Sauvignon Blanc and Cabernet Sauvignon.

The manor house on the second farm, Boschkloof, has been restored to offer accommodation to visitors who would like to enjoy a real farm getaway among the fynbos, blue cranes and other wildlife. The tasting room is open Monday to Friday from 08:00 - 17:00, Saturday from 09:00-|17:00 and Sunday 10:00-13:00.

Avontuur Estate on the R44 between Stellenbosch and Somerset West is waking up to warmer weather with the first of three live music evenings at the Tasting Room terrace from 18:00 – 21:00. The first music evening on 2 October will feature Idols winner Anke, who will be entertaining the crowds with some old favourites as well as songs from her new album. A total of 21 venues will participate in this year’s Open Gardens in the Elgin, Vyeboom and Bot River districts, ranging from large established country gardens (some over 50 years old), to young, recently planted gardens in villages and on smallholdings. T

he desolate, wind-swept Agulhas Plain seems an unlikely place to establish vineyards, and an even more unlikely place to yield premium wines of outstanding quality.

And yet the fourth annual Elim Wine Festival hosted by Strandveld Vineyards on 10 October, bears testimony to the phenomenal success of this wine-growing region where the interesting combination of climatic and soil conditions are particularly conducive to the production of phenomenal Sauvignon blanc wines.

STRANDVELD VINEYARDS Modern-day explorers Well off the beaten track, the Elim wine ward of the Cape Agulhas appellation consists of large farms spread out across the typical Overberg landscape between Agulhas and the historical missionary town of Elim.

Among the sprawling wheat, sheep and cattle farms are a handful of pioneering winemakers who realised the wine-growing potential of the area and started planting vines towards the end of the 1990s. It was a risky undertaking with no guarantees, but one that has over time paid off handsomely.

The largest of the wine farms in the area is Strandveld Vineyards, which is also home to the southernmost winery on the continent of Africa. Owned by a consortium of like-minded wine-loving friends, Strandveld has been home to winemaker Conrad Vlok and his family since 2004. Inspired by the cool maritime climate and the diversity of soil types on the farm, Conrad has over the past decade set out to produce site-specific wines that capture the essence of the Strandveld terroir.

Harsh conditions Situated barely 10km from the sea, the area is characterised by fierce winds, rolling mists and cool temperatures. These harsh conditions were found to be a double-edged sword, says Conrad, because it results in smaller yields, but as a consequence also produces grapes with more concentrated flavours. The result is a distinctive range of wines with an intense minerality, strong fruit flavours and an elegant complexity that has captured the imagination and attention of the wine world.

Conrad is a down-to-earth, warm-hearted man of the soil who clearly enjoys working closely with nature. His wine-making philosophy starts first and foremost in the vineyard. Drawing inspira-

tion from the early Portuguese explorers who first set eyes upon the southern tip of Africa in search of a sea route to the rich spice world of the East, Conrad is like a modern-day explorer who has to contend with the same tempestuous elements as these early sailors in order to produce the serious and complex wines that are creating such a stir among wine connoisseurs.

“We get the wind from all directions and while it keeps the vines disease-free and allows for slow, even ripening, we have to keep a close eye on our vineyards and guard against leaf blight which can develop because of the saltiness of the sea air,” says Conrad. While these extreme conditions can be stressful, Conrad also finds them challenging and highly rewarding. ”It was the same for those early explorers who were in danger of being ship wrecked by the stormy conditions at sea, but at the same time were dependent on strong winds to push them over the horizon and discover new lands and riches.”

Cool-climate wines The riches produced at Strandveld Vineyards include the First Sighting range (named after Bartholomeu Diaz’s first sighting of the Cape in 1488) of delightfully quaffable wines that include Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Noir, Shiraz and Rosé. Eager to explore the distinct flavour profiles produced by the exceptionally high soil variance found on the farm, ranging from koffieklip (ferricrete) and shale to sandstone and quartz, Conrad released a new range of premium Strandveld Vineyards wines in 2007.

Crafted from the finest selection of grapes from aspect and site specific vineyard blocks, these wines are a unique expression of the terroir and the slow ripening conditions of the cool Strandveld climate.

The flagship Strandveld Vineyards red wine is The Navigator, a

Rhône-style blend of Syrah, Grenache, Viognier and Mourvedré named after Prince Henry the Navigator, patron of early Portuguese exploration, while the Strandveld Vineyards flagship white wine, a Sauvignon Blanc / Semillon blend, is named Adamastor after the mythical sea god of wind and storms. Other wines in the Strandveld Vineyards range include Syrah, Pinot Noir, the Pofadderbos Single Vineyard Sauvignon Blanc, the Anders Sparrman Pinot Noir, the Suikerbekkie Noble Late Harvest and the Skaamgesiggie Pinot Noir MCC. The latter is named after the delightful Protea Prudens species which grows on the farm.

The national and international accolades that have been heaped upon Strandveld Vineyards’ wines are astonishing for a winery this young in such a remote corner of the world. Saturday 10 October Hemel-en-Aarde Nissan Trailseeker The third in a new series of four Trailseeker events in the Western Cape that will make up the official Western Cape Marathon Mountain bike series for 2015, takes place at Sumaridge Wine Estate in the Hemel-en-Aarde Valley near Hermanus.
