President's Letter Dear DVR-PASCD Members and Friends of Our Organization, We hope that you will consider membership to our organization if you aren’t already part of our learning community. This has been a year of growth and change in various ways for our organization. We continue to attempt to improve our organization through our collaborative work, service to the learning community, and reflection on our progress and purpose. Please share your thoughts and feedback with me directly or with any member of our executive board (all contact information is below) so we can sustain our ability to provide the type of events and learning experiences you find beneficial. Please follow us and our organization on social media as well. This year our overriding theme for our newsletter and events was – Innovation. We explored various facets of what this means in education. Our last event had a design thinking focus and reminded us of our purpose as an organization. The cornerstone of this mindset is thorough observation- especially in human interactions. It enables us to identify and understand the thinking and values of others. If we could transfer this mindset and process to how we view the challenges that we face in our organizations, it may provide us the “new set of eyes” that is necessary to design a solution to the problem. Too often our minds are quick to want to “fix” what is wrong, to work using limited perceptions of a situation, and to let historical precedents provide a foundation. We begin to create and solve without a true knowledge of purpose. In order to provide innovative solutions we need to first understand the people involved. We need to develop our ability to empathize. The group of panelists at our spring event ignited and propelled my desire to learn more about the design thinking mindset and how I could play a part of cultivating that way of thinking in the various educational communities in which I am an intellectually contributing member. One of the best resources I read and continue to refer to in order to clearly define this process is the Introduction to Design Thinking Process Guide available through the Stanford d.School at: bit.ly/dSchoolProcess (case sensitive)


President's Letter This type of work isn’t done in isolation. Begin the conversation with those in your organization or educational community to “Ideate”. Find a group of diverse mindsets that agreeably take part in academic discourse while keeping it from becoming personal. Nurture those who are willing to take the risk in being part of a collaborative venture that does not have a definitive end goal… yet. The last piece of the above informational resource ends with: “Hone your own process that works for you. Most importantly, as you continue to practice innovation you take on a designer mindset that permeates the way you work, regardless of what process you use.” If we would like our students and organizations to think differently, we must first attempt to do so ourselves. Last year, Garnet Valley has joined 100+ Districts and 19 States from across the Nation to become a #GoOpen Launch District. As a #GoOpen Launch district, we have accepted the challenge to replace at least one textbook with openly licensed educational resources within the next year. We are just over a year into the transition process, and we have been working closely with tool providers and mentor districts to build capacity to sustainably implement openly licensed educational resources in Garnet Valley. Working closely with our Technology Department and Director Sam Mormando, Bill Taylor and Rebecca Henderson from Spider Learning, and our GVHS Social Studies Teachers Dave Pimentel and Christine Gumpert, we have made some huge strides in recent months. Why We Decided to #GoOpen. Taking on replacing traditional textbooks with Open Education Resources

supports three of our district areas of focus: Student Achievement, Management of Systems, and Fiscal Responsibility. When looking closely at our Management of Systems around Curriculum, Instruction and Assessment, we realized our systems did not support our beliefs. Our beliefs center around the following: * We believe in investing in our teachers, because we know they are the best resource we have to maximize our students’ potential. * We believe in giving our teachers full ownership of what they teach, as well as a chance to personalize curriculum. * We believe in providing our teachers with the Training and Support they need to be up to date and successful. * We believe in replacing traditional textbooks with Open Education Resources.


Investing In Our Teachers By #Go(-ing)Open Anthony Gabriele DVR-PASCD Board Member However, our current practices had us sending approximately 70% of our funds to an outside textbook or resource company, and only keeping about 30% in-house. This practice did not support our beliefs. Along with paying for someone else’s work (someone who does not know our community, staff, or students), very little of what we were spending was focused on professional learning around shared, collaborative, and innovative practices. Not to mention that we would purchase these textbooks then teachers would only use 2-3 chapters out of them. Logically it did not make much sense to continue to sit around and admire a practice that did not make sense. We are now reallocating much of our funds to our teachers for OER creation, development and/or curation, and because we don’t know what we don’t know, we have partnered with Spider Learning for work on the ongoing professional learning, resource and HUB development to support this initiative. What Are We Learning with #Go(-ing)Open? Throughout this process, we are already finding that working with Open Education

Resources is increasing the quality of our curriculum and instructional design (we are now able to tap into not only our teacher’s content area expertise, but their knowledge of our students and school community as well), increasing the amount of collaboration that is happening among our staff, and increasing our ability to adapt a rapidly changing, Future Ready educational landscape…all of which will directly impact Student Achievement. Pictured on the following page is a sample of one of the Grade 9 Social Studies Modules. Each module corresponds to 1 Acquisition Skill listed in our Understanding by Design 2.0 Curriculum Units (adapted from Wiggins & McTighe). These are the ‘Know and Do’ statements outlined in Stage 1 Desired Results of each Unit. For this particular course, there are 34 Acquisition Skills listed across 5 Units. There is 1 module (complete with Transition Tasks, a Skills Based Objective, Introduction and Overview, 5 Resources with learning activities around each, a Skills Based Assessment and Benchmark Check) for each of the 34 Acquisition Skills. Sample template can be seen on pages 6-7.

Is it a lot of work…yes…but it is meaningful work that is tapping into the expertise of our most valued resource…our teachers. I have yet to find a situation in which investing time and resources into our teachers has not had a positive affect on our students. Reflections on the Process & Moving Forward For me, the biggest takeaway has been the amount and depth of work this requires. We very quickly figured out that this was going to be a constant work in process, as well as an exciting and enriching journey in which we were all going to learn and grown (admin and teachers) together. Our teachers, Dave Pimentel and Christine Gumpert, have been awesome in terms of not only pitching this idea a few years ago

(before we had the access or capacity to do so…see Building a Foundation for Short and Long Term Future Ready Success for more on how we got here), but being open and willing to help learn and provide real time, meaningful feedback along the way to help us do this right. Exploring the Maker Movement Linda Bluebello DVR-PASCD Board Member

On Thursday afternoon April 27th, the Delaware Valley Region of the PA Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development (DVR-PASCD), the Chester County IU, and the Southeast PA Association for Educational Communications and Technology (Southeast PAECT) partnered for an exciting afternoon of professional development and networking for educators in the region. The workshop entitled, Exploring the Educational Maker Movement: The What, The Why, and The How of Hands-on Innovative Learning began with a rich panel discussion comprised of a diverse mix of private and public school educators, students, and university faculty.

The hour long discussion was facilitated by Mr. Anthony Gabriele, Garnet Valley School District’s Supervisor of Curriculum and Instruction and Ms. Christy Brennan, Chester County IU’s Instructional Designer for Innovation in Education. Guiding questions addressed by the panelists included HOW their respective educational organizations defined “hands-on, innovative learning” and WHY their school/organization invested time, space, personnel, etc. into providing students with opportunities for handson learning. Finally, the panelists shared WHAT this type of learning looked like in their school today and what it may look like in the near future.


Event Recap

Exploring the Maker Movement Linda Bluebello DVR-PASCD Board Member Following the stimulating large group panel discussion, attendees had the opportunity to attend a small group 30 minute breakout session on a topic of choice led by the panelists and several classroom educators who were experienced practitioners of the makerspace model. Breakout session topics included Makerspaces: Technology and K-5 Literacy Connections, 20% Time in the 7th grade History Curriculum, and K-8 Collaboration & Innovation Spaces. These sessions provided concrete ideas and best practices in planning contemporary makerspaces. At the conclusion of the workshop, participants were eager to share a reflection or insight from their afternoon of invaluable learning, and walk away with some exciting door prizes including gift cards and books on makerspaces. All agreed that they couldn’t wait to return to their schools to create more robust and innovative learning environments for their students!

Meet Our Award Dr. Colleen Lelli Winners DVR-PASCD Board Member Every year the Delaware Valley Region of PASCD (DVR-PASCD) solicits nominations for two awards. The Person of Promise awards a pre-service teacher entering the field of education. The purpose of this award is to recognize a pre-service, initial certification teacher candidate who in the view of members of the nominee’s education faculty is “a person likely to make a significant contribution to the teaching profession.” The second award, The Snag in the River award, gives public recognition to teacher leaders, administrators, counselors, etc., in an educational setting who are making an impact. This year, John Beltrante, Principal of Worrall Elementary School in the Marple Newtown School District was our Snag in the River award winner. He was nominated by Dr. Dorie Martin, K-12 Literacy

Supervisor, ELA, & Federal Program Coordinator for the Marple Newtown School District and current president of DVRPASCD. As Dr. Martin commented, “The reason I am nominating Mr. John Beltrante for this award is for his loyalty and commitment not only to the education profession, yet, to the families within his educational community. John to his core values every educational professional in his building, every student and their family, and each member of the district community. He is beyond a snag in the river-he is a boulder catching the waves of students who would be happy to float along.” Mr. Bel--as students refer to him, has been changing lives for many years, first as a teacher then an assistant principal at the high school level and now principal of Worrall Elementary. Students look back fondly on the times that Mr. Bel mentored them.

Meet Our Award Dr. Colleen Lelli Winners DVR-PASCD Board Member One student commented, “As I approach my ten year reunion mark I look back with pride and fondness. I learned how to be a better person with Mr. Bel as my example. I dared to hope and dream. I never thought I was better than anyone and no one was any better than me. He instilled that in me. I will forever be grateful for his presence along my journey. He made the difference for me. I, now, own my own music store, provide guitar lessons, and play in a jazz band in the city. I am living my dream.” Daecia Smith, a recent Temple University graduate was recommended by her professor Jolene Borgese for the Person of Promise award. This past spring Dacecia was a secondary student teacher in English at the Academy at Palumbo in the School District of Philadelphia. While at Temple, Daecia was a recipient of the NCTE/ PCTEL competitive grant that supported an after school reading club for a group of fifth grade girls at the George Meade School. Daecia is part of the Big Brothers/ Big Sisters program and this enhanced her relationship with her little sister by forming a reading club with her friends. The girls read a novel on bullying (The Skin I’m In). They wrote in their journals on how the novel reflected their own lives and discussed how people react to people of color. Through this activity, the little girls learned how to read strategically, they learned about themselves and connected with an adult who appreciated them.

As Jolene Borgese notes, “Daecia may not have changed the world but she changed the world for five little girls who now see reading in a new light and saw the possibility of what they can become in Daecia.” Congratulation to both our award winners on their well deserved accomplishments and for making a difference in the lives of children as extraordinary educators.


What iGnites Us?

Illuminating Innovation at the Middle Level Garnet Valley Middle School: Glen Mills, PA

Joy Rosser, DVR-PASCD Board Member Evident upon entering Garnet Valley Middle School (GVMS) are the words of Steve Jobs, “Innovation distinguishes between a leader and a follower.” Staff and students are in the business of building leaders through the marriage of innovation and learning; this endeavor contributed to the recent honorable designation of Garnet Valley Middle School as a 2017 PA Don Eichhorn School: “School to Watch” (PA STW) as part of a recognition program developed by the National Forum to Accelerate Middle-Grades Reform. With the passion to motivate students to act on dreams and ideas, GVMS has embraced the concept of a makerspace by transitioning their traditional quiet, literacy focused library into a boisterous, active design-driven setting. While still maintaining a separate literacy space, the collaborative makerspace provides ongoing opportunities for students to explore their creativity, express their inventiveness, and share ideas with peers. Student participation in the creative space continues to gain momentum and popularity; students are emerging as leaders of their own ingenious thoughts. Peering into the window of opportunities in the GVMS makerspace reveals robot programming, kinetic and electronic circuit sets, the design of Revolutionary War catapults, expansive dry erase surface areas for artistic expression and design, and a silhouette maker for crafting projects involving precise and intricate cuts. The think, play, and design space

affords endless opportunities for student collaboration and expression. GVMS is well on its way to embracing 21st century education with a mission and vision focusing on creativity, compassion and community in a supportive culture. The Innovator’s Mindset written by George Couros, has encouraged and ignited change both in the district and in the school. The foundation of this text, the belief that abilities, intelligence, and talents are developed leading to the creation of new and better ideas is adopted at GVMS. Staff embrace an ongoing attitude of refusing to believe the impossibility of any venture when it comes to GVMS students. An even broader scope of the technology and innovation infused throughout the school are the accomplishments of STEAM night, Global Design Day, and the eSchool of Garnet Valley - a new initiative created to provide the resources and flexibility for students who learn best in either a full or part-time digital environment. The diverse digital curriculum offers students the choice of completing their courses in the Garnet Valley eSchool Studio, computer labs, at home, or other locations with Internet Access (GVCD website, 2017). As a hybrid model, the eSchool embodies

Joy Rosser, DVR-PASCD Board Member technological innovation, creativity and inclusion of all students in the Garnet Valley Middle School. Students, staff and the community of Garnet Valley Middle School are creating leaders in the realms of innovation, technology, inspiration and commitment. The journey is illuminated through their hallways, their courtyards, their classrooms, and most importantly, through

the attitudes and enthusiasm of those who walk through their doors every day. Joy Rosser is currently serving as secretary on the DVRPASCD board, teaching sixth grade science at Kennett Middle School, serving on the Pennsylvania Don Eichhorn Schools: Schools to Watch State Evaluation Team and is president of the southeast regional PAMLE board. Joy is expanding her research and writing; discovering ways people are being ignited within educational institutions, among student interactions, and within families affiliated with education.


Grant Recipient Rina Vassallo Projects DVR-PASCD Board Member Annually, DVR-PASCD offer mini-grants to educators in the region who would like to fund an activity in their classroom or school. DVR awards up to 3 of these grants annually and for the coming year have increased the amount of each individual grant to $500. We welcome applicants. The awards for the 2017-8 school year are due on June 30th and can applications can be accessed at http://www.dvrpascd.org/awards-andgrants.html. Christine Fleming-Hirshka - ENMS Mobile Projector East Norriton Middle School has been growing in size over the past two years. Every space in the school building is utilized for instruction or for school day meetings. As the population grew money to fund technological expansion was sparse. Classrooms were in need of projectors to enhance instruction and allow for presentations by both teachers and students. A mobile projector was also needed for school community events that were to be held in various locations throughout the building. The projector enabled mobility when presenting to parents and other stakeholders of the school district community. The projector was used this year for classroom instruction, assemblies, Parent Faculty Council (PFC)meetings, the teacher appreciation luncheon, faculty meetings, and professional development training sessions. It has expanded the opportunities to have multi-media presentations for a variety of functions at ENMS. It has enhanced both instruction and community events.


Grant Recipient Rina Vassallo Projects DVR-PASCD Board Member well to an alternative program with a concentration on individualized learning. The SMARTS Online program has resulted in a greater student understanding of personal responsibility and self-reflection on what does and does not for their own learning style. Students have enjoyed the program’s real world approach and the new viewpoint a refreshing change to programs of the past. An 8th grade presentation using the ENMS Mobile Projector purchased with the grant funds.

Sean Graham- SMARTS Online SMARTS (Strategies, Motivation, Awareness, Resilience, Talent) Online is an executive functioning skills acquisition program geared towards providing students long-term learning skills both in the classroom and post-secondary endeavors. The program allows students to develop self-understanding and discern the strategies which work best for their needs. SMARTS content ranges from memory strategies to metacognition activities to time management. The overall goal is to make students prepared for the challenges they face throughout their teen years into adulthood, while acquiring a set of skills unique to their own personal preferences. Kate Lange - Integrative STEM Network The grant money was used to guide a group of 20 educators rom Chester County, called the Integrative STEM Network, through a book study to understand and implement STEM and design thinking in the classroom. The book study was centered on LAUNCH: Using Design Thinking to Boost Creativity and Bring out the Maker in Every Student by John Spencer and A.J. Juliani. The network met four times over the course of the year to discuss the book, how they have implemented the learning, how they overcame obstacles, and to write and share an action plan for integrating design thinking and the maker-mentality in the classroom. The participants experimented with design thinking activities over the course of the year, and made plans to implement them as part of their curriculum next year. 15
