MORAL. HAPPY. PRODUCTIVE.

The purpose of a Durham Academy education is to prepare each student to live a moral, happy and productive life. The development of intellect is central to such a life and thus, intellectual endeavor and growth are the primary work of the school. The acquisition of knowledge; the development of skills, critical judgment and intellectual curiosity; and increased understanding are the goals of the school’s academic program.

2020–2021

IMPACT REPORT

Durham Academy’s 2020–2021 report recognizes all gifts received between July 1, 2020, and June 30, 2021. Donor names are listed at the appropriate threshold for their giving during this fiscal year. Please accept our sincere apologies for any inadvertent omissions or errors. We invite you to contact us with corrections or questions.

On behalf of our colleagues — the trustees, faculty and staff of Durham Academy —  we thank you for your commitment and dedication to our community throughout this challenging year. “Kites rise highest against the wind, not with it,” said Winston Churchill. Indeed, the pandemic has stretched our patience and our capacity — revealing resilience we may not have recognized, galvanizing our commitments to personal relationships and catalyzing innovations that are now propelling us in the most rousing comeback in our school’s 88-year history. Last year, we watched Cavaliers from all corners of our community rise to the challenge of COVID-19. We saw our Parents Association volunteers sustain the bonds of our community — even from a distance. Among their initiatives: a monthly series of loving surprises for our faculty and staff, including personalized thank-you cards, coffee and snacks, gratitude videos and new umbrellas for the carpool line. We welcomed more than two dozen alumni back to campus as coaches, teaching assistants and guest speakers. Through Instagram Live tours and Zoom happy hours, virtual book clubs and our first-ever Black Alumni Reunion, our Alumni Board found new ways to keep Cavaliers learning and connected. We marveled at our students as they faced the pandemic and a national racial reckoning with courage, creativity and commitment. “High school for us wasn’t just about getting that A, going to prom and cheering on athletic teams,” Emily Norry ’21 said in her commencement speech. “We had the unique opportunity to kick-start the rest of our lives. We haven’t waited for college or beyond to start being the people we are; our exposure to intense events in high

school has afforded us the space to grow as individuals and figure out what matters to us and what we want to stand for.”

WITH PROFOUND GRATITUDE,

Our teachers, coaches and summer camp counselors inspired us as they reimagined their classrooms, locker rooms and performance venues, revised their curricula and reinvented their roles. They prioritized the safety and wellness of our students, their learning and the progress they continued to make toward becoming their best selves. DA’s faculty and staff did what we once thought was impossible: “doing camp and school” safely on campus, from July to June, in the midst of a pandemic. And they did it with remarkable professionalism, creativity and care. This year’s Giving Day confirmed the vibrancy of the philanthropic spirit at DA. We crushed our goal, raising $375,062 from 1,148 donors — bolstering our operational budgets in a year full of unanticipated expenses for health and safety, staffing, technology and financial aid.

Caroline Rogers Chair of the Board of Trustees

Our continuing campus transformation has improved learning, teaching and gathering in ways we never would have predicted pre-pandemic. Who would have guessed that the K Family Outdoor Commons would host so many classes, concerts, lunches, advisories … and even commencement? Who would have predicted that the new Arts & World Languages Center would be the key to allowing all Middle School students to return to campus safely in the spring? Who would have thought that the state-of-the-art HVAC systems of our new STEM & Humanities Center would prove so essential for the Upper School? Whether through patient planning or agile improvisation, we will continue to face the realities of the world with optimism and purpose. We will not waver in our mission to prepare students for moral, happy, productive lives. Your support lifts our spirits and fuels our work.

“I give to DA so other students can benefit as I did. I would not have discovered some of my dearest passions, nor would I have made it through medical school, without the education, skills and life lessons I gained from my DA teachers and coaches. I owe them more than they will ever know.” — Marissa Kuo ’12 6  DURHAM ACADEMY

PARENTS ASSOCIATION The pandemic provided Durham Academy’s Parents Association the opportunity to redefine our role as community builders, working toward a united goal of supporting students and teachers. Through the dedication, creativity and hard work of our volunteer parents, Parents Association exceeded the three objectives put in place for the 2020–2021 academic year: 1. Community Engagement: Provide opportunities to unite the DA community by reimagining traditional events and creating new opportunities to come together. 2. Diversity, Equity and Engagement: Educate Parents Association volunteers and continue a journey of creating a more inclusive council while supporting the work of the DA Diversity, Equity and Engagement team. 3. Faculty and Staff Support: Show appreciation and provide support to those who play an invaluable role in the lives of our children. We are eager to continue these efforts next year.

“Volunteering and giving back on Giving Day is a way for me and my family to express our gratitude for the opportunities and the endless support that have brought our child to where she is today. Just like any goal, giving back is a habit that we have nurtured within our family over time. Throughout our service at DA, we have been blessed to witness the joy and impact Giving Day has made to enrich the lives of those within our community!” — Monica and Eric Newkirk, parents of Kyla Newkirk ’24 da.org/philanthropy  9

“This past year was a critical time for our community and world. The substantial additional costs that DA faced to keep our students, teachers, and faculty safe while providing unrivaled educational opportunities inspired us to increase our support. “Giving to Durham Academy is a tradition for our family. I attended Durham Academy, followed years later by our two daughters. Now my grandchildren attend Durham Academy and we couldn't be prouder. The school has changed and evolved over time, and we support DA as it continues that evolution and educates the next generation.” — Carlyle White ’65 and Debbie White, parents of Carrie White Trumbower ’00 and Meredith White Howell ’97 (parent of Lena Howell ’29 and Lillian Howell ’32) da.org/philanthropy  21

GIVING SOCIETIES 1933 LEGACY GIVING SOCIETY Durham Academy traces its beginnings to 1933, when seven students and one teacher met in the Forest Hills Clubhouse, which still stands at Forest Hills Park. The school was established by George Watts Hill and his wife, Ann McCulloch Hill, and named Calvert Method School to honor her childhood education at Baltimore’s Calvert School. The 1933 Legacy Society honors donors who have made a gift to Durham Academy through philanthropic planning. Membership is extended to all who make a provision in their estate plan to benefit the school. If you have included Durham Academy in your estate planning or would like to learn more about creative giving options, please contact Director of Philanthropy Michelle Morgan at michelle.morgan@da.org.

HILL-KENAN LIFETIME GIVING SOCIETY

BESS PICKARD BOONE LIFETIME GIVING SOCIETY

Commemorating the influence and vision of lifetime trustees George Watts Hill and Frank Hawkins Kenan, the Hill-Kenan Society honors donors with cumulative giving of $1,000,000 or more.

Honoring the leadership of Bess Pickard Boone — who served as headmistress of Durham Academy’s predecessor, Calvert Method School, from 1938 to 1957 — the Bess Pickard Boone Society honors donors with cumulative giving of $250,000 or more.

GIVING CIRCLES In appreciation of their generous support through both annual and multi-year commitments, members of DA Giving Circles are invited to attend special events and programs throughout the year.

“While we are planting shade trees that we’ll never sit under, creating an endowed fund that will go on in perpetuity to support DA after we’re gone makes us feel really good. This is a great joy for us to give back for all DA has meant to our family.” — Margaret and Earl Chesson, parents of Win Chesson ’02, Mary Chesson Barnard ’03, Tricia Chesson ’07 and Elizabeth Chesson Hutchison ’89

“I am happy to support DA through the Alumni Board. The school, including faculty, staff, parents, and friends, has meant so much to both me, my older brother Allan, and my parents. I'm excited to see DA thrive both now and in the future.” — Bonita and Brad Hardy ’98 da.org/philanthropy  27

“I support DA because I look back with a lot of gratitude and appreciation for my time there. The incredible teachers, the K-12 friendships and just the overall special experience — I’ve learned just how unique all of that was the older I get. Really, I just want some other shy and curious little kid to have that same type of formative journey that I had!” — Ryan Steele ’05 28  DURHAM ACADEMY

CAPITAL, ENDOWMENT & RESTRICTED GIFTS While Durham Academy relies on the flexible support provided by the DA Fund, gifts designated for campus improvements, grow our endowment and strengthen school programs are investments in DA's future — supporting the innovation and ambition that have earned the school national recognition and increasing the value of a DA diploma. We are grateful to our generous donors who made contributions to the following areas between July 1, 2020, and June 30, 2021.

MATCHING GIFTS

CAPITAL PROJECTS The recent construction of the Upper School STEM & Humanities Center, K Family Outdoor Commons and the Middle School Arts & World Languages Center represents the first half of the most ambitious campaign ever undertaken by Durham Academy. Three construction phases remain to complete the Middle School transformation, and they will be funded entirely by philanthropic giving. Since 2018, DA has received 85 commitments in support of these campus projects totaling $17 million toward our $22 million goal. A public phase of the campaign will begin in spring 2022, and we look forward to every member of our community joining in the effort.

ENDOWED FUNDS Endowments distinguish the most successful independent schools. Endowed funds support Durham Academy on an annual basis in perpetuity, allowing our people and programs to be agile and innovative as education evolves. Amelia Matthews Endowment Fund
