Planned Giving One of the most powerful and philanthropic tools available to Durham Academy’s supporters is planned giving. The benefits of planned giving include tax savings, increased income and providing for heirs, and benefiting Durham Academy at the same time. Making a planned gift is a special way to support the school because it allows you to donate assets yet defer the time DA actually receives them. The best gift plans improve the donor’s financial and tax situation, often right away. Several planned giving options are available, with the simplest one being a bequest in your will. Other planned gift options include life insurance, charitable remainder trusts and charitable lead trusts. We strongly recommend you consult with your attorney or tax adviser as you research the most appropriate way to remember DA in your will or estate plans. “Creating an endowed scholarship fund that will go on in perpetuity to support DA after we’re gone gives us great joy. DA has meant so much to our family. We hope our gift of life insurance will inspire others to also give back to DA.” — Earl and Margaret Chesson Parents of Elizabeth ’89, Win ’02, Mary ’03 and Trish ’07 For more information about planned giving, contact: Leslie Holdsworth Director of Development 919-287-1708 leslie.holdsworth@da.org

Endowment Funds

We recognize and thank the donors who made payments on Evergreen Campaign capital pledges this year. Your continued support of Durham Academy helps to secure the financial health of the school for the future while our current students flourish in the Upper School Learning Commons and Kirby Gym.

Throughout Durham Academy’s history, alumni, parents and friends have established named endowment funds to provide lasting support for scholarships, faculty development and academics. It is the Durham Academy Board of Trustees’ policy that unrestricted, named endowment funds may be established with a gift of $25,000 or more and restricted, named endowment funds may be established with a gift of $100,000 or more.

28  DURHAM ACADEMY | 2017–2018 | ANNUAL REPORT

The Durham Academy endowment portfolio is managed by Eton Advisors under the direction of the finance committee of the Board of Trustees. Eton also monitors the quasi-endowment portfolio managed by SunTrust Bank. Between 2 and 4 1/2 percent of the previous 12-quarter rolling average of the endowment is spent each year in support of the operating fund. The spending rate is determined by calculating the real dollar return of the portfolio less inflation. Durham Academy’s endowment, like endowments at most independent schools, is a collection of various restricted and unrestricted endowment and scholarship funds. As an aggregate, this fund generates annual income for DA that flows into the operation of the school and primarily supports faculty development, financial aid and facility maintenance.

Auction proceeds provide 85 percent or more of Parents Association’s annual budget each year, which is used to support outstanding teaching and exceptional student experiences. Going forward, the auction will be online-only in even-numbered years, and we’ll host a gala event (with both a live auction and online bidding) in odd-numbered years.

Golf Tournament Durham Academy’s 18th Annual Golf Tournament raised $28,000 for the Durham Academy Fund. We are grateful to the DA families and friends who supported the tournament through tee sponsorships, faculty sponsorships, player fees, mulligan purchases and donations.

2017–2018 Board of Trustees Members of Durham Academy’s Board of Trustees serve as stewards of the school who hold in trust its mission and reputation. As such, trustees accept the obligation to not only preserve but to advance the institution. Their work begins with the fiduciary expectations of duty (due diligence on financials), care (executing decisions by prudent standards) and obedience (to laws and

bylaws). Beyond these duties, trustees focus on policies and strategies that are future-focused, working in partnership with the head of school, who oversees daily operations. The board utilizes its committees to study and assess the needs, activities and performance of the school and to make recommendations when planning, developing and
