Letter from the Head of School is committed to providing an education that will allow our students to develop into their authentic, best selves. We successfully fulfill our mission because our talented, dedicated faculty and our bright, receptive students are supported by a community of loyal and generous donors. This is a community that has a shared expectation that we will all support our school. Through the support of the many donors recognized in this Annual Report, Durham Academy raised more than $1.9 million last year. This outpouring of support demonstrates an extraordinary philanthropic devotion to our students and their futures.

Every day I have the privilege of seeing firsthand the impact of a Durham Academy education on students past and present. I know it is an experience that comes as a result of our community’s collective dedication to our mission. Moral, happy and productive: these three words say it all. Durham Academy

We celebrate a number of noteworthy philanthropic milestones this year: • A record-breaking Durham Academy Fund raising $1.1 million. • Alumni giving participation reaching

• Our endowment growing to a historic high of $12.4 million. • Our most successful benefit auction ever, with net proceeds of $220,000, allowing Parents Association to reserve $50,000 in anticipation of an upcoming campaign to support the new Upper School STEM & Humanities Center and a complete renovation of our Middle School. I want to thank every person who contributed to this remarkable success. The dollars raised in the Durham Academy Fund made an immediate impact on operations, helping to fund our faculty — our greatest asset — through a competitive salary and benefit package, and supplementing the various academic and extracurricular programs that distinguish the DA experience. In addition to our strong annual fund, we continue to grow our endowment. Thank you to everyone who made an endowment gift this year. We celebrated a historic moment this year

a school record of 29 percent, thanks

insurance upon the school. Their gift reveals

deep wisdom about what is ahead for DA, and we hope it will inspire others to invest in similar ways. I also want to thank the donors who continue to support the school through Evergreen Campaign capital pledges. As those commitments are winding down, we are in the planning stages for what will likely be our most ambitious and comprehensive campaign to support pressing needs on our Upper School and Middle School campuses. Our school community has a history of responding with great generosity toward our capital needs. This wonderful culture of philanthropy positions us well to launch the next chapter of fundraising and to continue to protect the long-term financial health of Durham Academy. This Annual Report celebrates the powerful impact your gifts have on the life of our school. On behalf of our faculty, staff and students, I thank each of you for your support and commitment to Durham Academy. Together, we are making an impact on the lives of students today and tomorrow.

Michael Ulku-Steiner, Head of School

Hill-Kenan Society Durham Academy has a legacy of families who have been exceedingly generous to the school. Over the years these alumni, parents and friends have led the way as Durham Academy has added new buildings, updated facilities, sustained a robust annual giving program and grown the endowment to support faculty and financial aid. The Hill-Kenan Society is named for the school’s only lifetime trustees, George Watts Hill and Frank Hawkins Kenan, whose leadership, dedication and vision ensured Durham Academy’s strong tradition of academic excellence. Their enduring commitment is an inspiration and a challenge to all who benefit from their dreams and generosity.

ENDOWMENT

Endowment Funds Throughout Durham Academy’s history, alumni, parents and friends have established named endowment funds to provide lasting support for scholarships, faculty development and academics. It is the Durham Academy Board of Trustees’ policy that unrestricted, named endowment funds may be established with a gift of $25,000 or more and restricted, named endowment funds may be established with a gift of $100,000 or more. The Durham Academy endowment portfolio is managed by Eton Advisors under the direction of the finance committee of the Board of Trustees. Eton also monitors the quasi-endowment portfolio managed by SunTrust Bank. Between 2 and 4 1/2 percent of the previous 12-quarter rolling average of the endowment is spent each year in support of the operating fund. The spending rate is determined by calculating the real dollar return of the portfolio less inflation. Durham Academy’s endowment, like endowments at most independent schools, is a collection of various restricted and unrestricted endowment and scholarship funds. As an aggregate, this fund generates annual income for DA that flows into the operation of the school and primarily supports faculty development, financial aid and facility maintenance.

body,” Earl and Margaret explained. “Our gift affirms the value that every child is deserving of a positive and transformative educational experience regardless of circumstance. “Creating an endowed fund that will go on in perpetuity to support DA after we’re gone makes us feel really good. This is a great joy for us to give back for all DA has meant to our family. We hope our gift will inspire others to also give back to DA.” A gift of this size will truly be transformative for Durham Academy. It will be one of the largest gifts ever received by the school and will significantly increase the financial aid endowment.

Founder’s Society

Golf Tournament

The Founder’s Society recognizes individuals who support Durham Academy through planned gifts such as life insurance, irrevocable trusts and bequests. Planned gifts greatly enhance the school’s endowment and assure a strong financial future for Durham Academy. We salute these members of the Founder’s Society who help to ensure educational excellence for generations to come.

DA’s 17th Annual Golf Tournament raised $26,000 for the Durham Academy Fund. We are grateful to the DA families and friends who supported the tournament through tee sponsorships, faculty sponsorships, player fees, mulligan purchases and donations. Our thanks also go to alumni parent Jeff Tillman for his help with this year’s event.

2016–2017 Board of Trustees Members of Durham Academy’s Board of Trustees serve as stewards of the school who hold in trust its mission and reputation. As such, trustees accept the obligation to not only preserve but to advance the institution. Their work begins with the fiduciary expectations of duty (due diligence on financials), care (executing decisions by prudent standards) and obedience (to laws and bylaws). Beyond these duties, trustees focus on policies and strategies that are future-focused, working in partnership with the head of school, who oversees daily operations. The board utilizes its committees to study and

assess the needs, activities and performance of the school and to make recommendations when planning, developing and establishing policy. Brendan Moylan ’85, Chair
