Durango Parks & Recreation

2017 - 2018 Fall Winter Enrichment Guide

Table of Contents

Message From The Director Durango Parks and Recreation Department consistently strives to exceed community expectations by implementing continuous improvements to park and recreation amenities in the City. Much has been accomplished since 2010 when the current Parks, Open Space, Trails and Recreation Master Plan was adopted. This fall, the City will be initiating the update of the Master Plan with the assistance of the community. We encourage all interested residents to engage in the future planning for Parks, Open Space, Trails and Recreation opportunities in Durango. Community meetings and a variety of methods to voice your opinion will be integral to the Master Plan update process. The Parks, Open Space, Trails and Recreation Master Plan will consider future opportunities for improvements to existing parks as well as developing new parks in Durango. Open Space preservation was prioritized in the 2010 Master Plan and the future areas of emphasis for permanent protection will be explored. Trails are highly valued in the community and the Master Plan will analyze the existing trail system and explore opportunities for new connections. The City provides three indoor recreation facilities currently and a wide variety of recreational programs. The Master Plan will explore future opportunities for facility and program enhancements to meet the expanding needs of the community. The Parks, Open Space, Trails and Recreation Master Plan will provide a framework for future funding decisions on capital improvements. The planning horizon for the Master Plan is typically five to ten years. We are fortunate to live, work and play in a community that values parks and recreation. Community engagement in the development of the Master Plan will ensure that the future brings many reasons for locals to stay and recreate and others to come and visit. The Durango Parks and Recreation staff would like to hear your thoughts on how our services can make a difference in your life. Stay connected by following us on Twitter, Facebook, or visit the City website at www.durangogov.org Please give us a call at (970) 375-7321 or contact us by email at rec@durangogov.org

Trail Rules & Etiquette The City of Durango is expanding upon the Share the Trail philosophy to provide clear guidelines for the use of City trails to enhance the enjoyable experience of all trail users without adversely impacting the use of others. Trails are for everyone. Please respect other trail users and adhere to the following local trail expectations:

• Be courteous. All trail users should be respectful and aware of other users regardless of their mode, speed, or level of skill. Dogs must be on a leash. Keep trails clean and safe by disposing of trash and animal waste in appropriate trash receptacles.

• Be predictable. Travel in a consistent and predictable manner. Keep right and pass on left. Always look behind before changing positions on the trail.

• Yield to other trail users. Yield to slower and on-coming traffic. Bicyclists yield to pedestrians; and bicyclists riding downhill

yield to bicyclists riding uphill. Yielding the right-of-way requires slowing down to a safe speed, being prepared to stop, establishing communication and passing safely. When merging onto a multi-use hard surface trail, yield to other users on the primary trail corridor.

Be observable. Provide an easy to hear warning before passing. Give a clear signal using voice (state “On your left”), bell or horn well before passing. Wear lights and reflective clothing at night. Wear only one ear bud if listening to devices.

• Don’t block the trail. When in a group or with your pets, move off the trail to avoid blocking the flow of other users. When stopping, trail users should move off the trail.

• Control your speed. Slow down and use caution when approaching other trail users and blind turns. Please keep speed under 10 mph on the Animas River Trail.

Trails Rules and Etiquette Specific to Natural Surface Trails Additional trail etiquette for natural surface trails: •

Respect the trail. Stay on designated trails. Stay off natural surface trails that are wet or muddy. Avoid creating braided or social trails.

Yield to Horses. All trail users yield to equestrians in open space areas where horses are allowed.

4

Trail System Development Trail user desires have evolved and the Parks and Recreation Department welcomes input from the community on enhancements to the existing trail system. Please contact the Department at 970-375-7321 or by email at rec@durangogov.org to discuss trail maintenance, trail routes or new trail opportunities.

Parent Tot Aquatics 6 mo - 4 years

Parent Tot Aquatics is designed to familiarize young children with the water and prepares them to learn to swim. It is not designed to teach children to become good swimmers or to survive in the water on their own. Parent Tot aquatics gives parents safety information and teaches techniques to help orient their children to the water. It is designed to provide direction regarding supervision of water activities in a responsible manner.

PARENT TOT LEVEL 1

Ages 6 months to 24 months. This class lays a foundation for basic swimming skills. Parent participation in the water is required. Parents are taught to safely work with their child in the water, how to support and hold their child and to encourage the child to participate and try each skill. Water safety topics will be introduced to the parents.

PARENT TOT LEVEL 2

Ages 2 to 4 years. Parent participation in the water is required. Level 2 builds on the skills introduced in Level 1. Participants improve on these skills and become more independent in the water.

Preschool Aquatics 4 - 5 years

The primary objective of Preschool Aquatics is to promote the development of fundamental water safety and aquatic skills. In this program children learn the basics in a fun and non-threatening environment. It is not uncommon for students to repeat a level until they are able to demonstrate all the requirements for that level.

PRESCHOOL LEVEL 1

Children learn the most elementary aquatic skills, which they continue to build on as they progress through the Preschool Aquatics and the Learn-To-Swim levels. At this level, children start developing good attitudes and safe practices around the water.

PRESCHOOL LEVEL 2

The objectives are to build on the basic aquatics skills learned in Level 1 and to give children further success with fundamental skills performed at a slightly more advanced degree than Level 1. Most skills at this level are performed with assistance. This level marks the beginning of independent locomotion skills.

PRESCHOOL LEVEL 3

This level builds on skills learned by providing additional guided practice of basic skills at a more proficient level and at greater distances. Children improve coordination by combining arm and leg actions independently.

Learn to Swim 6 years & Up

Learn-To-Swim teaches aquatic and personal water safety skills in a logical progression. Throughout the levels, participants build on their basic skills to learn various propulsive movements on their front, back, and side. As the levels increase, participants learn to refine the different strokes and build endurance. Each level includes an exit skills assessment that combines many of the skills learned in the level. The objectives are to learn basic personal water safety information and skills, to help children feel comfortLEARN-TOSWIM LEVEL 1 able and to enjoy the water. At this level, children learn elementary aquatic skills, safe swimming habits and

positive attitudes about the water. The objective is to give participants success with fundamental skills. Children learn to float without support LEARN-TOSWIM LEVEL 2 and to recover to a vertical position. This level marks the beginning of true simultaneous and alternating arm and leg actions on the front and back. Children learn the survival float as well as the front crawl and elementary backstroke. This level introduces LEARN-TOSWIM LEVEL 3 children to scissor and dolphin kicks and builds on the fundamentals of treading water and diving. The objectives are to develop participants’ confidence in the strokes previously learned and increase their LEARN-TOSWIM LEVEL 4 endurance while furthering skills. Participants start to learn the back crawl, breaststroke, butterfly, sidestroke and basic turning at a wall.

LEARN-TOSWIM LEVEL 5 LEARN-TOSWIM LEVEL 6

The objectives of this level are coordination and stroke refinement. Flip turns on front and back are introduced. Level 6 is geared toward participants who want to enter competitive swimming or diving and achieve a high level of fitness. For User Name and Password Call 970-375-7300

Durango Youth House Hockey League

This program is a non-competitive hockey alternative for players who want to experience the best game in the world! Players will practice once a week in a competitive teaching environment with qualified coaching staff, managed through USA Hockey’s American Development Model (ADM) for youth hockey players. Players are divided into 3 teams based on their age at the beginning of the program. All U6 & U8 games will be played cross-ice (i.e., half-ice) per the ADM. U18 games will be played on full ice. This is a skill-based program for all age groups that aims to develop the skills of each player to advance him/her to the next level of hockey. This approach develops a solid foundation of skills that is essential to becoming a quality individual and team hockey player. The program will offer an in-house tournament scheduled for March 10 - 11, 2018, as well as out-of-town game/ tournament options. Each player will also receive practice and game sweaters to use throughout the season. A mandatory parents meeting will be held on October 17, 2017 during practice.

Gymnastics Team The gymnastics team is the highest level program that trains year around. All participants must be coach recommended. Tuition is due by the first of every month. Tuition fees paid after the 10th of the month will be assessed a $10 late fee. More than 2 missing months of tuition will be cause for suspension from the team until payment is made. Durango Gymnastics is excited to offer two options for both boys and girls on competitive teams. The Colorado Association of Recreational Athletics (CARA) league competes against other Colorado teams in a fun, recreational league during the summer (May—July). These teams practice less during the week, allowing time for other activities outside of the gym. The United States of America Gymnastics (USAG) league is more competitive for those gymnasts interested in extra dedication and hard work towards the sport. This option requires more time commitment in the gym and gymnasts have the potential to travel around the country to compete during the fall for the compulsory levels (September—December) and during the spring for the higher levels (January—May). For more information about the competitive teams or to schedule an evaluation for placement, contact Stephanie Malhmood at stephanie.malhmood@durangogov.org or call 970-375-7393. Team practice schedules are subject to change based on number of participants. To get a team practice schedule, please speak with your gymnast’s coach, or contact Durango Gymnastics by the above contact information.

Training includes self-defense, weapon defense, traditional weapon skills (bokken, jō, tanbō, tantō), ukemi (attacking, falling, rolling), mind-body coordination, Ki breathingmeditation, and Kiatsu acupressure.

Did You Know?

2015 Healthy Kids Colorado survey results show that parents who believe underage marijuana use is wrong have children who are 4 times less likely to use marijuana.

Tips to Starting the Conversation Use facts - Not fear. Sharing factual, honest information

rather than scare tactics will help your advice ring true. Talk through scenarios - Providing young people with examples of when they may encounter alcohol, drugs and peer pressure can help them think through how to respond ahead of time. Be clear - Clearly establish that you will not tolerate certain behaviors that can put their health and safety at risk. For User Name and Password Call 970-375-7300
