M o n t h ly N e w s l e t t e r Volume 17 • issue 4 - April 2013 From our Association Executive

Durango Area Assn. of REALTORS

Every Spring I have the privilege of attending the National Association of REALTORS® Association Executive’s Institute. Since this year had such a heavy emphasis on technology, I also brought our resident genius Jo Ann as well. The event is designed specifically for REALTOR® Executives and Staff, and focuses on best practices, resources, and tools for today’s Association. This year’s AEI was held in sunny San Diego, CA… unfortunately the sun only made a few brief appearances during our visit. Nonetheless, the trip was a fact filled and packed full of information. The common theme of this year’s curriculum was “A New Perspective” and focused on how to stay relevant in an ever changing environment with tracts including “New Tools of the Trade” focusing on technology, “Seeing Things in New Ways” which focused on practical association management tips, and “The Shape of Things to Come”, which analyzed the industries environment as a whole and what’s on the horizon for REALTOR® associations and the industry in general. I could literally write you a novel on all of the things I learned while I was away but I’ll spare you the torture and focus on a few important issues I’d like to share with you all: • For those of you that haven’t noticed yet, has made some major improvements to their website. For more information on their new look and why the change visit: • The REALTOR® Relief Fund raised over $2.3M for Hurricane Sandy relief, of which $2.1M came from local and state association donations. Since its inception, the REALTOR® relief fund has raised over $26M to aid in disaster relief around the country. Over $50K of that was given to Colorado wildfire relief. • The REALTOR® Federal Credit Union has merged with Northwest Federal Credit Union out of Virginia to allow for more flexible banking options. REALTORFCU now has over 10,000 members. For more information on this valuable member benefit visit • On the Legal front: o Neighborhood City suit- The online entity has been requesting licensing agreements from MLS’s to acquire data to sell as referrals for 30% of Commission. They are currently in litigation with several MLS’s nationally. A definite caution to agents! o A recent Florida HUD Fair Housing Complaint regarding an “adults only” residential community has recently received some attention at the National level. NAR is working on both suggested language for remarks in IDX transmittable fields, and program recommendations for the ability to scan listings for violations, allowing transmission of listings with remarks fields eliminated if there was a violation found. • For some super cool tech tools be sure to check out: o Jambox (Made by Jawbone®) Bluetooth speaker, which also has a built in microphonegreat for portable conference calling ($150-$200/ o Nectar Mobil Power- portable charger that will charge a USB device for up to two weeks. o a free conference calling service with the ability to screen share o Evernote- note taking app that allows you to share notebooks. You can make changes to your documents, and whomever you share your notes with gets realtime updates! o And for the brave… LEAP®- similar to an XBOX Kinect for your computer- uses physical gestures for your desktop operation… very futuristic indeed!! If you’re interested in receiving more information about my travels please feel free to contact me. Thank you for allowing me these opportunities to learn and share my experiences with you.
