Durango Parks & Recreation 2019 Spring/Summer Enrichment Guide

Message From the Director The Parks and Recreation Department is dedicated to maintaining our promise to voters in 2005 and 2015 to continue the growth and improvement to parks and recreation amenities. In 2005, the citizens of Durango approved a Quarter Cent Sales and Use Tax for the preservation, acquisition, and maintenance of natural lands including, but not limited to, land to preserve water quality in rivers and streams, wildlife habitat, land for hiking and biking, and the creation and maintenance of parks and trails. In 2015, the citizens of Durango approved a Half Cent Sales and Use Tax extension of the 1999 tax for the construction, operations or maintenance of recreation facilities, parks, trails, pedestrian and bicycle improvements, maintenance facilities used by the Parks and Recreation Department, and the urban forest. All expenditures from these dedicated Parks and Recreation sales tax funds being first submitted to a citizen advisory board for a recommendation to the City Council. The citizen advisory boards include the Parks and Recreation Advisory Board, Natural Lands Preservation Advisory Board and the Multi-Modal Advisory Board. Projects completed with the dedicated Parks and Recreation sales taxes includes the development, operation and maintenance of the Durango Community Recreation Center, Lake Nighthorse Recreation Area, Durango Gymnastics, Smith Sports Complex and Durango Softball Complex at Fort Lewis College, the Animas River Trail, the SMART 160 Trail, the preservation, acquisition and maintenance of Horse Gulch, Dalla Mountain Park, Overend Mountain Park, Cliff Rock open space adjacent to Twin Buttes, and Oxbow Park and Preserve, Chapman Hill snowmaking equipment, Whitewater Park development, Santa Rita Park and Folsom Park playgrounds, and more. Future projects to be funded with the dedicated Parks and Recreation sales tax include the connection of the SMART 160 Trail to the Animas River Trail, Camino del Rio underpass linking downtown to the Animas River Trail, Lake Nighthorse and Animas River improvements, and the development of Durango Mesa Park. Additional information on future projects will be included in the update of the Parks, Open Space, Trails and Recreation Master Plan to be finalized this year. Thank you, Durango, for your continued support. The Durango Parks and Recreation staff would like to hear your thoughts on how our services can make a difference in your life. Stay connected by following us on Twitter, Facebook, or visit the City website at www.durangogov.org Please give us a call at (970) 375-7321 or contact us by email at rec@durangogov.org

Parent Tot Aquatics 6 mo - 4 years

Parent Tot Aquatics is designed to familiarize young children with the water and prepares them to learn to swim. It is not designed to teach children to become good swimmers or to survive in the water on their own. Parent Tot aquatics gives parents safety information and teaches techniques to help orient their children to the water. It is designed to provide direction regarding supervision of water activities in a responsible manner. PARENT TOT LEVEL 1

Ages 6 months to 24 months. This class lays a foundation for basic swimming skills. Parent participation in the water is required. Parents are taught to safely work with their child in the water, how to support and hold their child and to encourage the child to participate and try each skill. Water safety topics will be introduced to the parents.

PARENT TOT LEVEL 2

Ages 2 to 4 years. Parent participation in the water is required. Level 2 builds on the skills introduced in Level 1. Participants improve on these skills and become more independent in the water.

Preschool Aquatics 4 - 5 years

The primary objective of Preschool Aquatics is to promote the development of fundamental water safety and aquatic skills. In this program children learn the basics in a fun and non-threatening environment. It is not uncommon for students to repeat a level until they are able to demonstrate all the requirements for that level. PRESCHOOL LEVEL 1

Children learn the most elementary aquatic skills, which they continue to build on as they progress through the Preschool Aquatics and the Learn-To-Swim levels. At this level, children start developing good attitudes and safe practices around the water.

PRESCHOOL LEVEL 2

The objectives are to build on the basic aquatics skills learned in Level 1 and to give children further success with fundamental skills performed at a slightly more advanced degree than Level 1. Most skills at this level are performed with assistance. This level marks the beginning of independent locomotion skills.

PRESCHOOL LEVEL 3

This level builds on skills learned by providing additional guided practice of basic skills at a more proficient level and at greater distances. Children improve coordination by combining arm and leg actions independently.

Learn to Swim 6 years & Up

Learn-To-Swim teaches aquatic and personal water safety skills in a logical progression. Throughout the levels, participants build on their basic skills to learn various propulsive movements on their front, back, and side. As the levels increase, participants learn to refine the different strokes and build endurance. Each level includes an exit skills assessment that combines many of the skills learned in the level. LEARN-TOSWIM LEVEL 1

The objectives are to learn basic personal water safety information and skills, to help children feel comfortable and to enjoy the water. At this level, children learn elementary aquatic skills, safe swimming habits and positive attitudes about the water.

LEARN-TOSWIM LEVEL 2

The objective is to give participants success with fundamental skills. Children learn to float without support and to recover to a vertical position. This level marks the beginning of true simultaneous and alternating arm and leg actions on the front and back.

LEARN-TOSWIM LEVEL 3

Children learn the survival float as well as the front crawl and elementary backstroke. This level introduces children to scissor and dolphin kicks and builds on the fundamentals of treading water and diving.

LEARN-TOSWIM LEVEL 4

The objectives are to develop participants’ confidence in the strokes previously learned and increase their endurance while furthering skills. Participants start to learn the back crawl, breaststroke, butterfly, sidestroke and basic turning at a wall.

LEARN-TOSWIM LEVEL 5

The objectives of this level are coordination and stroke refinement. Flip turns on front and back are introduced.

LEARN-TOSWIM LEVEL 6

Level 6 is geared toward participants who want to enter competitive swimming or diving and achieve a high level of fitness.

Gymnastics Team

The gymnastics team is the highest level program and trains year around. All participants must be coach recommended. Tuition is due by the first of every month. Tuition fees paid after the 10th of the month will be assessed a $10 late fee. More than 2 missing months of tuition will be cause for suspension from the team until payment is made. Durango Gymnastics is excited to offer two options for both boys and girls on the competitive teams. The Colorado Association of Recreational Athletics (CARA) league competes against other Colorado teams in a fun, recreational league during the summer (May—July). These teams practice less during the week, allowing time for other activities outside of the gym. The United States of America Gymnastics (USAG) league is more competitive for those gymnasts interested in extra dedication and hard work towards the sport. This option requires more time commitment in the gym and gymnasts have the potential to travel around the country to compete during the fall for the compulsory levels (September—December) and during the spring for the higher levels (January— May). For more information or to schedule an evaluation for placement, please email Stephanie.malhmood@durangogov.org or Mackinsey Allen at mackinsey.allen@durangogov.org call 970-375-7393. Team practice schedules are subject to change based on number of participants. To get a team practice schedule, please speak with your gymnast’s coach, or contact Durango Gymnastics at the above contact information.

Trail Rules & Etiquette The City of Durango is expanding upon the Share the Trail philosophy to provide clear guidelines for the use of City trails to enhance the enjoyable experience of all trail users without adversely impacting the use of others. Trails are for everyone. Please respect other trail users and adhere to the following local trail expectations: Be courteous. All trail users should be respectful and aware of other users regardless

of their mode, speed, or level of skill. Dogs must be on a leash. Keep trails clean and safe by disposing of trash and animal waste in appropriate trash receptacles. Be predictable. Travel in a consistent and predictable manner. Keep right and pass

on left. Always look behind before changing positions on the trail.

Yield to other trail users. Yield to slower and on-coming traffic. Bicyclists yield

to pedestrians; and bicyclists riding downhill yield to bicyclists riding uphill. Yielding the right-of-way requires slowing down to a safe speed, being prepared to stop, establishing communication and passing safely. When merging onto a multi-use hard surface trail, yield to other users on the primary trail corridor. Be observable. Provide an easy to hear warning before passing. Give a clear signal using voice (state “On your left”), bell or

horn well before passing. Wear lights and reflective clothing at night. Wear only one ear bud if listening to devices. Free Bike Bells available at the Durango Community Recreation Center. Don’t block the trail. When in a group or with your pets, move off the trail to avoid blocking the flow of other users. When

stopping, trail users should move off the trail.

Control your speed. Slow down and use caution when approaching other trail users and blind turns. Please keep speed under

10 mph on the Animas River Trail.

Additional Trail Etiquette For Natural Surface Trails Respect the Trail. Stay on designated trails. Stay off natural sur-

face trails that are wet or muddy. Avoid creating braided or social trails. Yield to Horses. All trail users yield to equestrians in open space areas where horses are allowed.

Trail System Development

Trail user desires have evolved and the Parks and Recreation Department welcomes input from the community on enhancements to the existing trail system. Please contact the Department at 970-375-7321 or by email at rec@durangogov.org to discuss trail maintenance, trail routes or new trail opportunities.
