Listening and living intentions When you allow yourself to connect to the heart, that is where your 'true north' resides. Your body, in all its wisdom, knows exactly what is required.
Many of us use the New Year as a time to reflect and set our intentions for a better year ahead. And…a few weeks or months later, we can’t even remember our commitment. So, how can we do it differently this year? Start by slowing down – your brain probably has a billion ideas about what you could do better, bigger, faster or more. And therein lies the problem. We listen to our minds, which tend to pull us in dozens of varying directions, leaving us feeling frustrated, no matter what we choose.
When you allow yourself to connect to the heart, that is where your “true north” resides. Your body, in all its wisdom, knows exactly what is required. (If only you would listen!) Right now, close your eyes. Take a few breaths. Imagine the energy of your brain dropping down into your heart. (I like to put my hand on my heart when I do this.) Breathe deeply, and ask your mind to suspend judgment. Now ask yourself – what can I do to help me be more health, peaceful or vibrant? Listen to that quiet voice. It may tell you something surprising. The call may be simple or truly radical. Whatever comes up, do not let your mind criticize or talk you out of it. Even if you have no idea how you can achieve what you just heard, just let it marinate – live the question. “What would my life be like if I did this?”
Play in this idea and see what happens; I promise you’ll be pleasantly surprised.
So, for this year’s resolutions to be successful, they must be heart-centered. And based in something that is truly important to you. Maybe you want to lose a few pounds – that’s great! Now, go deeper and connect into why that is important to you. And let that be your motivation. A negative statement like “I’m fat and need to lose weight” doesn’t truly motivate anyone. A deeper “why” might be “I want to live a vital life and keep up with my grandkids.” Write it down and place a post-it note on the fridge or mirror and come back to what’s truly important to you. Connecting with your deeper intention will certainly help you realize your goals, even when you have strayed. And you will feel more deeply fulfilled as you get closer to living your intentions.
