Director of Golf Operations Another Season has come to a quiet, frost delayed end. I would like to thank all our Members and Public golfers for making this year a busy one. Even with all the rain this year everyone still came out to the Dunes in good spirits and that made this year enjoyable. I would like to take this time to thank Jackie, Leanne and Rhona for all their hard work on our host tournaments this year. With new blood and new sponsors all of this years Dunes events were a success. From Opening day, to the above mentioned frosty end the course looked and played great. My thanks to Shelly, Brian and all the maintenance crew for all their hard work. Especially during the rainy weeks. A lot of water was pumped by a hard working crew.
Tournament Committee The Pro Shop had a lot of new faces this year. Adam, Mike, Peter, Eric, Kyle and Mckenzie all got their rookie season under their belts. I big thank you to Alex, Zac and Meagan for helping train the new crew. They all worked hard and we had a few laughs along the way. My best to all of those that are back in school and to those who returned to their real jobs for the winter. The Pro Shop is open for all your Christmas needs or if you just want to stop by and say hello. As usual, I know you are waiting for my golf game update from the season. It was a better year, except for that 99 first round in the Men’s Open. The 99 wasn’t so bad as the 82 in the second round which drew many chants of sandbagger. I can assure you I worked much harder shooting 99 then I did 82.
Thanks to our 2011 Dunes Golf and Winter Club hosted event sponsors and our golfers who bought 50/50’s, gambled on tee draws, bought a West Jet ticket and bid on silent auction items we were able to raise just over $6000.00 for our Dunes Junior Program. The Dunes recognizes in today’s economy it may not be easy for some of our Jr. community to participated in the game of golf, so therefore we wish to make the game of golf more accessible by providing , golf camps, transportation, memberships, green fee passes and lessons. We believe golf encourages fair play, sportsmanship and self confidence. And because you supported us we are taking a step in the right direction. Merry Christmas and Thank you. – Leanne Wolfe. Rhona Law and Jackie Wallan
The Marshalls and the Backshoppers helped keep the course running smoothly again this season. My thanks to them for all their help. They quietly do their jobs well and make my job so much easier. I look forward to having them all back next season.
All the best for the holidays. Stay warm, drive safe and eat lots. I know you are all happy my hockey team is back so I will finish with GO JETS! – Scott Smith

Looking back, this past golf season seems like a bit of a blur. I never managed to get out for as many rounds as I had dreamt of, but I did manage to see most areas of the golf course at least a couple times. There were many experiences and challenges this year that I will be able to draw upon for knowledge in seasons to come. I am already looking forward to the next golf season, and find myself growing jealous of anyone reading this letter in the warmer southern climates. I just might have to make a trip
somewhere this off season to make sure my clubs still work. However, as an avid snowboarder, I am also looking forward to the light fluffy stuff. As we all know, the holiday season is just around the corner. The holiday season means different things to different people. For me it is a time to spend with friends and family. Whether it be seeing family members who I don’t see often enough, or catching up with high school friends who now live in different cities. The holiday season is about holiday cheer. This holiday season, I hope everyone has the opportunity to eat, drink and be merry. I know I will. – Mike Bowen

We are going green!
Tis the season to reflect on the year past. For us in maintenance it was a wonderful season with many good things, with only a few less then desirable events. All the rain this season defiantly presented us with challenges… But at the same time we learned a great deal about our drainage systems, as well as provided us with plenty of water for our irrigation pond. We were certainly spoiled this year, with the arrival of several pieces of new equipment, making our jobs faster and more efficient. This year also gave us a new irrigation system, which was needed and definitely appreciated! Not sure how many noticed, but we had very few irrigation breaks this year, now that is something to be grateful for! We would also like to thank all of our dedicated, hardworking staff. You know who you are! The golf course is ready for winter, with our irrigation lines empty and our greens put to bed. Let’s hope it’s a mild winter with average snowfall. We would like to wish everyone a safe and happy holiday season. See you all next year! – Shelley Hoffman and Brian Bittner
