ISSUE 1

Welcome to the beginning of Southern League football! It is a great occasion to bring back South Island league football to the city and the Caledonian. Many of you will remember the days of traveling club teams from around the country visiting Dunedin grounds, even at the old Caledonian pitch, with velodrome attached, on Andy Bay Rd. We look forward to renewing the relationship (and rivalry) that comes from playing against clubs around the South Island. The increased competition this league provides players will help bridge the gap between local football and that played at the national league level, allowing a better pathway for our young players to come through. We look forward to the competition it brings! A warm welcome to Southland United. Both clubs have enjoyed some tough matches in the local round leading into this fixture. Everyone is welcome back to the Culling Park clubrooms for the after match drink and debrief. A big thank you to all those behind the scenes who have helped the club get here today. Our sponsors, many of whom are printed in this programme, have been a key part of our club over many years - thank you for your continued support. To all the club members who put up their hand to help the club, throughout junior and senior football - thank you - today is a great occasion for the entire club. Enjoy the game. FROM THE DUGOUT

www.dunedintechnical.nz

As Head Coach of Dunedin Technical A.F.C. I would like to take this opportunity to welcome the match officials and all of our valued supporters to the Caledonian ground this afternoon. Also a special mention goes to Luis Paiva and his Southland United side. It is a game that everyone at Dunedin Technical has been looking forward to since the qualification process was finalised and the draw for the Southern Football League announced. It is clear that for South Island football to improve the best clubs need to play against each other more often. Today’s game marks the start of what will hopefully be an era in which clubs have the chance to, over time, better the technical and tactical capability of play across both federations. Dunedin Technical is delighted to have the opportunity to be a part of this. We are aware of the challenges that lay ahead but are eager to test ourselves. The game today promises to be an exciting encounter. Let’s hope the weather stays fine and the crowd fills the stadium with plenty of noise. Enjoy the game Tony Martin

TECH HISTORY

Tech Talk

ISSUE 1

The club was formed in 1920 following a meeting of night pupils of the King Edward Technical College. Two teams were entered that year in the OFA 3rd & 4th Grade competitions under the official title of K.E.T.C.O.B.A AFC or Tech Old Boys for short. First grade statuses reached in 1925. The teams sported purple & black shirts in those days changing to the present maroon in 1951. The first official home ground was the Oval in 1922, transferring to the Caledonian in 1933 & back to the Oval in 1935. In 1953 the club moved to its current premises at Culling Park where the present changing rooms were the official Clubhouse, having been built by voluntary labour, and a single floodlight pole was erected for night training. School boy teams were also entered for the first time in 1953. In 1959 the club made the bold move in being the first club in Otago to import a player/coach from England. The next 4 years saw a tremendous amount of hard work by club members firstly by erecting floodlights to a standard for night football & culminating in 1964 with the opening of the new hall & gymnasium. It proved to be an outstanding asset to the club for the last 54 years, firstly as in indoor training facility & more recently for the thousands of members & guests it has hosted. In 1980 the name Dunedin Technical became official, then to Speedlink Technical following the attraction of a major sponsor in 1989, and in 1992 reverted once again to Dunedin Technical. Playing highlights have abounded, firstly the 1963 Rothmans Cup Final & then the 1964 Chatham Cup Final. It would be another 34 years until we made a Chatham Cup Final appearance, again finishing runner up as in 64. 1999 saw the greatest achievement in our history when we again made the final, this time a convincing winner 4-0 over Waitakere City. At the turn of the century the club competed well for several years in the then club base national league, finishing as high as 3rd in 2000 before its demise & re-birth of the now franchise based league.
