THE OFFICIAL TECH MATCHDAY PROGRAMME

ISSUE 4 - 11 August 2018

DUNEDIN TECHNICAL VS QUEENSTOWN Tahuna Park Saturday 11th August 2018 2:45pm Kickoff

PRESIDENT’S WELCOME

Tech Talk

ISSUE 4

A warm welcome to the Queenstown team and management for this, the penultimate game of Tech’s Southern League for 2018 - and the last home, as our side is away to Nelson next weekend. We last met at the ground at the Queenstown Events Centre and came off second best, therefore we are expecting a good tough battle today. This league has proved to be a great step-up for our club to play against the best clubs across the South Island and we are all hoping to see the effort that has been put into this season continue through to next year. The aim of our club is always about building for the future, right throughout the age groups, making sure pathways are in place so that players can compete to the highest level (and not have to leave Dunedin to do that) - while also ensuring all club members are having an enjoyable footballing experience. I believe this year at the club we have achieved that - and importantly - we have building blocks in place for that to continue for future years. Enjoy watching the game. Andrew Brick Douglas

FROM THE DUGOUT

www.dunedintechnical.nz

As Head Coach of Dunedin Technical AFC I would like to take this opportunity to welcome the match officials and all of our valued supporters to Tahuna Park for this Saturday afternoon fixture. Also a special mention goes to Jamie Whitmarsh and his Queenstown Rovers side. It is hard to believe but the match this afternoon is our final home game of the season. With this in mind I would like thank all the supporters and sponsors who have contributed so much to the team this season. Your support is genuinely appreciated. The game today has the potential to be an exciting encounter. Both teams will be looking to finish the season with positive results and in recent times this fixture has been full of goals. Let’s hope that Dunedin turns on the weather and the crowd is thoroughly entertained. Enjoy the game Tony Martin

TECH HISTORY

Tech Talk

ISSUE 4

The club was formed in 1920 following a meeting of night pupils of the King Edward Technical College. Two teams were entered that year in the OFA 3rd & 4th Grade competitions under the official title of K.E.T.C.O.B.A.F.C. or Tech Old Boys for short. First grade statuses reached in 1925. The teams sported purple & black shirts in those days changing to the present maroon in 1951. The first official home ground was the Oval in 1922, transferring to the Caledonian in 1933 & back to the Oval in 1935. In 1953 the club moved to its current premises at Culling Park where the present changing rooms were the official Clubhouse, having been built by voluntary labour, and a single floodlight pole was erected for night training. School boy teams were also entered for the first time in 1953. In 1959 the club made the bold move in being the first club in Otago to import a player/coach from England. The next 4 years saw a tremendous amount of hard work by club members firstly by erecting floodlights to a standard for night football & culminating in 1964 with the opening of the new hall & gymnasium. It proved to be an outstanding asset to the club for the last 54 years, firstly as in indoor training facility & more recently for the thousands of members & guests it has hosted. In 1980 the name Dunedin Technical became official, then to Speedlink Technical following the attraction of a major sponsor in 1989, and in 1992 reverted once again to Dunedin Technical. Playing highlights have abounded, firstly the 1963 Rothmans Cup Final & then the 1964 Chatham Cup Final. It would be another 34 years until we made a Chatham Cup Final appearance, again finishing runner up as in 64. 1999 saw the greatest achievement in our history when we again made the final, this time a convincing winner 4-0 over Waitakere City. At the turn of the century the club competed well for several years in the then club base national league, finishing as high as 3rd in 2000 before its demise & re-birth of the now franchise based league.
