ISSUE 2

A warm welcome to the players and management of Nomads United - is great to have you in Dunedin for this game. Up until now, seeing Mainland teams play in Dunedin would happen only once, maybe twice, a season. Now with this league in place we look forward to these games occurring more frequently and bringing back the competition (and club rivalry) along with it. The first couple of rounds of Southern League football have been exciting for players and supporters alike, which is a good advertiser for the game, with it picking up a lot of interest in our local media. A big thank you to all the Tech supporters and volunteers who help throughout the club and make events like today come together. Enjoy the game. Andrew Brick Douglas

FROM THE DUGOUT

www.dunedintechnical.nz

As Head Coach of Dunedin Technical AFC I would like to take this opportunity to welcome the match officials and all of our valued supporters to the Caledonian ground this afternoon. Also a special mention goes to Andy Pitman and his Nomads United side. Our away trip to Coastal Spirit last weekend was exactly the challenge we expected. It was an entertaining match and the away point was some reward for our efforts, especially considering our position at half time. However this Sunday brings Nomads to the Caledonian fresh from a very positive result against Nelson. The nature of the South Island league means that every game has the opportunity to have a significant bearing on potential outcomes. Thus every game is important in and of itself, in a league that is definitely a sprint rather than a distance event. The game today has the potential to be an exciting encounter. A quick glance at the league table confirms the importance of the fixture to both teams. Let’s hope the weather stays fine and the crowd fills the stadium with as much noise as they did two weeks ago. Enjoy the game Tony Martin

TECH HISTORY

Tech Talk

ISSUE 2

The club was formed in 1920 following a meeting of night pupils of the King Edward Technical College. Two teams were entered that year in the OFA 3rd & 4th Grade competitions under the official title of K.E.T.C.O.B.A AFC or Tech Old Boys for short. First grade statuses reached in 1925. The teams sported purple & black shirts in those days changing to the present maroon in 1951. The first official home ground was the Oval in 1922, transferring to the Caledonian in 1933 & back to the Oval in 1935. In 1953 the club moved to its current premises at Culling Park where the present changing rooms were the official Clubhouse, having been built by voluntary labour, and a single floodlight pole was erected for night training. School boy teams were also entered for the first time in 1953. In 1959 the club made the bold move in being the first club in Otago to import a player/coach from England. The next 4 years saw a tremendous amount of hard work by club members firstly by erecting floodlights to a standard for night football & culminating in 1964 with the opening of the new hall & gymnasium. It proved to be an outstanding asset to the club for the last 54 years, firstly as in indoor training facility & more recently for the thousands of members & guests it has hosted. In 1980 the name Dunedin Technical became official, then to Speedlink Technical following the attraction of a major sponsor in 1989, and in 1992 reverted once again to Dunedin Technical. Playing highlights have abounded, firstly the 1963 Rothmans Cup Final & then the 1964 Chatham Cup Final. It would be another 34 years until we made a Chatham Cup Final appearance, again finishing runner up as in 64. 1999 saw the greatest achievement in our history when we again made the final, this time a convincing winner 4-0 over Waitakere City. At the turn of the century the club competed well for several years in the then club base national league, finishing as high as 3rd in 2000 before its demise & re-birth of the now franchise based league.

ORIGINS OF TECH TALK

Tech Talk

ISSUE 2

With the O.F.A weekly magazine finishing in 1973, 1974 was a very lean season for general information, match reports and gossip from the Club. Along came 1975 and still no magazine after the first round of games. Doug Russell & Wolfgang Gerber discussed the possibilty of creating a newsletter which would include match reports, general information, coming events etc. The committee was due to meet that night, so we sought and received permission, and the first edition was produced that week. Sold on the Thursday night of April 17th, 1975 for a mere 5 cents...
