A warm welcome to Ferrymead Bays on this our fourth game of the Southern League. It has been a great league to date with strong competition right throughout all the games – making fantastic football watching for the spectators around the South Island. It would be great to see this league continue in the next season. Our club is having a very strong season right throughout the teams and grades. Our Prem Women have reached the semi-final of the Kate Sheppard Cup and we have a number of teams sitting first and second in their respective league tables. Our junior club has strong representation with five teams away to South Island tournaments over the past two weeks. All of this is due to the hard work and dedication of players and their management staff looking to strive to the best of their abilities. It certainly shows what can happen when putting together an environment with a strong focus on players achieving their top potential. A big thank you to everyone who supports the club behind the scenes in everything we do. Today’s match has shaped up to be another top Mainland – Otago game. Enjoy watching the game. FROM THE DUGOUT

www.dunedintechnical.nz

As Head Coach of Dunedin Technical A.F.C. I would like to take this opportunity to welcome the match officials and all of our valued supporters to Tahuna Park this afternoon. Also a special mention goes to Danny Halligan and his Ferrymead Bays side. Last weekend Nomads played quality football and I have to be honest and say I was very pleased with the efforts of our team to grab a point. It is great to see this level of football being played on the Caledonian with the spectators having the opportunity to be thoroughly entertained. As with all the games in this South Island League the challenges keep coming, week in, week out and the Sunday fixture against Ferrymead Bays will be no different. With five titles to their name during the MPL era it is clear they will provide stiff opposition. For Dunedin Technical it is another opportunity to test ourselves at this level. Sunday also marks the last Dunedin Technical appearance for Tim McLennan, for the foreseeable future at least. I would like to acknowledge Tim’s contribution to the club, both on and off the park and wish him well for his travels. Enjoy the game Tony Martin

TECH HISTORY

Tech Talk

ISSUE 3

The club was formed in 1920 following a meeting of night pupils of the King Edward Technical College. Two teams were entered that year in the OFA 3rd & 4th Grade competitions under the official title of K.E.T.C.O.B.A.F.C. or Tech Old Boys for short. First grade statuses reached in 1925. The teams sported purple & black shirts in those days changing to the present maroon in 1951. The first official home ground was the Oval in 1922, transferring to the Caledonian in 1933 & back to the Oval in 1935. In 1953 the club moved to its current premises at Culling Park where the present changing rooms were the official Clubhouse, having been built by voluntary labour, and a single floodlight pole was erected for night training. School boy teams were also entered for the first time in 1953. In 1959 the club made the bold move in being the first club in Otago to import a player/coach from England. The next 4 years saw a tremendous amount of hard work by club members firstly by erecting floodlights to a standard for night football & culminating in 1964 with the opening of the new hall & gymnasium. It proved to be an outstanding asset to the club for the last 54 years, firstly as in indoor training facility & more recently for the thousands of members & guests it has hosted. In 1980 the name Dunedin Technical became official, then to Speedlink Technical following the attraction of a major sponsor in 1989, and in 1992 reverted once again to Dunedin Technical. Playing highlights have abounded, firstly the 1963 Rothmans Cup Final & then the 1964 Chatham Cup Final. It would be another 34 years until we made a Chatham Cup Final appearance, again finishing runner up as in 64. 1999 saw the greatest achievement in our history when we again made the final, this time a convincing winner 4-0 over Waitakere City. At the turn of the century the club competed well for several years in the then club base national league, finishing as high as 3rd in 2000 before its demise & re-birth of the now franchise based league.
