2014 DUNDAS DUKES SEASON GUIDE

A LETTER FROM THE MAYOR “Take me out to the ball game…” For over 100 years we have gathered in Dundas to partake in “America’s Past Time—baseball. Hearing the crack of the bat, tas#ng the hot dogs, enjoying the blue skies and green grass, and of course the last inning of the game with bases loaded, two outs, two strikes and the pitch...the stuff legends and tradi#ons are made of. Here in Dundas we are proud of our Dukes. They work hard, play harder and love the game! The Dukes organiza#on has worked diligently to provide the fans with an outstanding facility, Memorial Field. We hope you enjoy your #me at the game and in our beau#ful community. Thank you to the Dundas Baseball Associa#on for its hard work and dedica#on to con#nuing the tradi#on of baseball in Dundas. Carry on and share the tradi#ons, bring a neighbor or friend to the next game! On Behalf of the City of Dundas, thank YOU for your support of Dundas Dukes Baseball!

2014 DUNDAS DUKES SEASON GUIDE

2013 IN REVIEW 2013 In Review Dundas started the 2013 season by winning 10 in a row throughout the span of May and didn’t suffer their first defeat un#l a 6-1 June 1st loss to St. Louis Park. The Dukes won their first three Sec#on 1B contests en-route to an 18-5 record un#l June 29th, then the Dukes went 2-6 over their next eight games finishing the season 30-11. The Dukes claimed the number one seed in the Sec#on 1B playoffs, and three Sec#on 1B wins in a row gave the Dukes the Sec#on 1B top seed heading into the Aus#n Super Sec#ons. ANer a 4-3 win over first round opponent Duluth, the Dukes then dropped two in a row on the same day, 4-1 to Aus#n, and 8-4 to Eagan, to end the 2013 season. Twice in 2013 the Dukes won 10 games in a row, and their 30-11 record marks the fourth consecu#ve 30-win season. With the 30win season in 2013, the Dukes now notched 138 victories since 2010. Over that span, Dundas has posted a .730 win percentage (138-51), and a .803 win percentage at home (94-23). The 11 losses in 2013 marked the lowest since 2011 (11) where the Dukes finished 34-11.

Pitchers The Duke’s pitching staff had another great year in 2013, pos#ng a miniscule 2.69 ERA in over 347 innings of work. The staff was led by ace Todd Mathison, who started 13 of the Dukes 41 games, pitched four complete games, and hurled 27% of the Dukes innings on the mound. He was 11-3 with a 1.77 ERA and allowed a meager .206 opposing baPng average. In his 96.2 innings of work, Mathison struck out 109 ba9ers while only walking 14, and only gave up one homerun. Over the last four seasons (2010 - 2013), Mathison has only allowed 48 earned runs in 290.0 innings of work, good for a 1.49 ERA over that span. Jamie Soyk had an outstanding rookie campaign on the mound for the Dukes. He threw 53.0 innings, earning a 7-1 record in 15 appearances. Soyk followed Mathison’s lead and posted a .215 opponent baPng average and wasn’t far behind in ERA either, pos#ng a 2.07 ERA in 2013. Soyk posted as many saves (2) in 2013 as he gave up extra base hits (2). Like Soyk, another Dukes started that hurled 53.0 innings in 2013 was leNy Ma9 Neuger. Neuger, who garnered nine starts on hill, only second to Mathison, finished 3-2 with a 3.74 ERA. He struck out 28 and only walked 12, bes#ng Soyk and Mathison. The leNy hurled 1 complete game and held opponents to a .291 baPng average. Another newcomer, Joe Waite, had an impressive 2013 for Dundas, pos#ng a 2.82 ERA and a 3-1 record in 38.1 innings of work. Waite was part of three combined shutouts, recorded one save, and held opponents to a .242 average.

2013 IN REVIEW

Adam Langer and Mitch Peterson led the Dukes out of the bullpen. Peterson made a team high 22 appearances, including three saves, and was part of four combined shutouts. In 32.0 innings of work, Peterson posted a 4.50 ERA with a 1-1 record. Langer, who threw 46.0 innings, posted a 3.52 ERA, and punched out 28 hi9ers. Langer finished 3-2 in six starts on the hill. The Dukes also got quality innings from Jake Mathison and Adam Neuger in 2013. Both threw almost iden#cal innings, 11.1 for Mathison and 11.2 for Neuger, while Neuger posted a 0.00 ERA and Mathison a 3.97 ERA. Ou9ielders The ouRield was again anchored by Tyler and Carson Jones in 2013 but also they warmly welcomed newcomer Jon Bishop, the versa#le Charlie Ruud, and the return of long#me Duke Robin Moore. Bishop clearly announced his presence in the Dukes lineup, bel#ng a team high six homeruns, including a walk-off two-run shot against Elko to open the Sec#on 1B playoffs. To go along with his six bombs, Bishop slugged .504 with a .304 baPng average, and was the only Duke to not make an error in 2013 (minimum 20 chances). Ruud, who also saw some #me in the infield, put up some solid numbers at the dish, hiPng .308, scoring 25 runs, and notching 24 RBI. His .442 on-base percentage, 23 walks, and .969 fielding percentage were among the team leaders. Carson Jones posted another outstanding year for the Dukes in 2013, leading the Dukes in hiPng with a .396 baPng average. It’s the second #me in four years that Carson has led Dundas in that category, as he hit .413 in 2010. The leadoff hi9er also led the team in runs (39), hits (57), total bases (67), and stolen bases (15). Tyler wasn’t far behind his brother, hiPng .391 with 50 hits, scoring 25 runs, and swiping 11 bases. Jones proved to be a tough out, only striking out four #mes in 140 plate appearances and was one of the seven Dukes that posted an on-base percentage (.432) of over .400. Moore, who hit .309 and stole 32 bases in 57 games in 2010, returned to the Dukes in 2013 and hit .232 with 15 RBI and seven stolen bases. Playing in 29 of 41 games of the four-month 2013 season, veteran Rich Bordas compiled a .357 average to go with a .465 on-base percentage. Infielders Dundas cherished its newcomers in 2013, none who had bigger contribu#ons in the field than second baseman Nate Van Roekel. Star#ng 29 games in the infield for the Dukes, Van Roekel hit .353 with 41 hits, 28 RBI and a team high 12 doubles. He only made five errors in 136 chances and was involved in 17 of Dundas’ 34 double plays.

2013 IN REVIEW

Van Roekel’s double play partner, Josh Maus, again proved to be consistent at short for Dundas. Maus started 34 games in the 2013 season, hiPng .232 with four doubles, 19 runs scored, 17 RBI and five stolen bases. He was also part of 20 of the Dukes 34 double plays. While the Dukes enjoyed help from their newcomers, long-#me Duke Steve Loos posted arguably one of the best hiPng seasons in recent years. Loos either led or was second in nearly every major hiPng category for the Dukes in 2013. His 34 RBI, .579 slugging percentage, and .496 on-base percentage were top on the team, and his .395 baPng average, 66 total bases, 45 hits, 26 runs, 25 walks, nine doubles, and four home runs were all second on the team. Todd Mathison and Mike Ludwig rounded out the Dukes infield in 2013. When Mathison wasn’t on the hill, he was helping the Dukes at third or second base, as he hit .287 with 19 runs and six doubles. Ludwig took the most of the innings at first base and wasn’t afraid to flash the leather, only making one error in 263 chances (.996 fielding percentage), and has only made two errors in the past two years. He also hit .243 with 35 hits, 20 RBI, and 23 runs scored. Catchers Patrick Wadzinski started 32 games behind the plate for the Dukes in 2013. Wadzinski hit .275 with a .437 on-base percentage and finished #ed for second in runs scored (23). He led the team in walks (26) for the second year in a row and now has draw 102 free bases since 2010. Wadzinski made only two errors for a .992 fielding percentage and threw out seven base runners.

2014 DUNDAS DUKES SEASON GUIDE

2014 PREVIEW 2014 Preview The Dukes return a core of starters from their 30-11 finish a year ago and is a big reason why they have garnered the preseason #9 ranking in Class B. Seventeen of the Dukes first eighteen games are home, and they open the season with the 2014 Class A runner-up Minneapolis Cobras. With the loss of Adam Langer, Joe Waite, and Jake Mathison the Dukes will look to some new faces to fill some crucial innings in 2014. They also add some depth in the infield with the addi#on of Adam Johnson, a 2013 St. Olaf graduate, making him the 10th St. Olaf Ole on the Dukes roster. Pitchers The Dukes have suffered some losses to the pitching staff that hurled 7 combined shutouts in 2014 and might have to start looking for some new faces to fill some innings. Dundas returns its ace, Todd Mathison, in 2014, and will look to him to garner a majority of the highprofile starts on the hill. Neuger and Soyk will also see a number of starts on the mound. Leading the charge out of the bullpen will be Peterson and Adam Neuger. The two may see a significant amount of innings, as only first year Duke, Alex Donkers, and Charlie Ruud have pitching backgrounds. Carson Jones, who pitched 11.0 innings in 2012, could also see some late inning work on the bump. Ou9ielders Dundas could see as many as seven different ouRielders man the grass at Memorial field. Carson Jones will make most of the starts in center, while Tyler Jones, Bishop, Ruud, Moore, and Adam Johnson will all vie for innings. Freshly signed Nate Picha, a 2013 Northfield High School graduate, may also garner some innings in the grass. All ouRielders could also see some #me at designated hi9er throughout the year.

2014 PREVIEW Infielders With the double play combina#on of Van Roekel and Maus up the middle, the Dukes will only sharpen the infield with the addi#on of Adam Johnson, who played first base and ouRield at St. Olaf. Johnson, who hit .309 with a team-leading 11 doubles and 29 RBI in his senior campaign as an Ole, figures to fit right in with the slick fielding Dundas infield, flashing his senior year fielding percentage of .983 at first base. Spelling #me anywhere needed, the versa#le Mathison, Ludwig and Loos will all contribute for the Dukes infield in 2014. Catchers Patrick Wadzinski will handle most of the catching du#es in 2013. He will be helped by Tyler Jones.

RETIRED NUMBERS

#8

Lew Olson

Lew came to the Dukes in 1981. Dundas finished second in the state that year and won its first state championship in 1982. He was the MVP of that tournament. He ended up hiPng 38 home runs in 43 games. Lew was also on the 1988 championship team, capping it with a three-run homerun in the championship game. Lew could do it all—hiPng, fielding, and pitching. He is probably the best Dukes’ player ever.

#10 Larry Johnson Larry caught for the Dukes for over 12 years. He was as tough as they come and oNen played hurt. He set the stage for the Dukes teams that became state powers in the late 70s and beyond. Larry set the standard for catchers and was a stable force for the Dukes to build their team around.

#12 Don Freeman Don’s was the first number that the Dukes re#red (1981). He played in the Cannon Valley League for over 20 years, the majority with Dundas. He played shortstop, third and second base. He even did a li9le pitching when called on. Don was a real fire brand and did everything he could to help the Dukes win. When the Dukes needed a manager in 2001, Don stepped in and managed for four years, even though he lived in Winona.

David “Budda” Howie (1955-2013) The Dundas Dukes family lost one of their own over the winter. David "Budda" Howie passed away Dec 21st 2013. Dave played for 17 years for the Dundas Dukes and helped them secure two State Tournament Championships and several other trips to state. After his retirement he was one of the Dukes biggest fans and critics. He will truly be missed at the ballpark. YOU’RE IN DUNDAS, THE TOWN OF BASEBALL
