now covered the Royal County, as much of the country was blanketed thanks to Storm Emma. Despite blocked roads, water stoppages, electricity blackouts and a shortage of provisions in the shops, children still managed to have fun in the snow! The snow caused major disruption locally, with roads blocked, including the Ashbourne Road, Kilmoon, Ardcath, Donore, Bellewstown, and other rural areas. Meath County Council provided stocks of salt for public use at central locations in Laytown/Bettystown, Slane, Duleek and Donore. Assisting Meath County Council were some hardy locals, like David McGuinness who was busy clearing footpaths in Duleek, and Ian Howard clearing roads up in Bellewstown, one of the worst affected areas. Huge thanks to Meath County council ground staff who were supported locally by the local farming community. Many farmers put their tractors to use, removing snow with diggers and movers, as well as dragging vehicles up
hills or out of ditches. ‘If it wasn’t for the farmers, we would be stranded for days,’ said one local Facebook user. In particular, thanks must go to Lawlor's Donore, Mullen's, Paudi Howard, Ian Howard & Regina Everard, Thomas & Mossey Whyte, Aidan Ryan, Gavin Burke & Colin Crosby, The Madden Family, Clonalvy. ‘Without these farmers, many of the secondary roads would have remained closed for days. They simply did tremendous work!’ said Cllr Sharon Keogan. A huge credit also must go to the local shops who, despite the awful weather, remained open for short periods for local people. These small businesses are the heartbeat of our community
and this weather surely has caused them is in times like we have just seen how important they really are.’ Trees and large branches were brought down by the wind and the weight of the snow, with locals moving them away and alerting others through social media. Up to 1,000 homes in East Meath were without power, including Duleek, Laytown, Bettystown and over to Balbriggan. ESB staff worked hard to reconnect homes, with the Council clearing the roadways to affected dwellings. A power outage in Donore impacted on water supply as the Staleen Water Treatment Plant had no power. Irish Water urged people to conserve water for priority usage such as the Lourdes Hospital. ‘Some people were badly impacted by this horrendous weather,’ said Cllr Sharon Keogan. ‘But in our own true fashion, we rallied around and helped our neighbours and came safely through it. That’s what a community is all about – helping and supporting each other – and we did it this time!’

Adrian Murray Milk Agent retires Following in his father’s footsteps and after 33 years delivering milk, agent Adrian Murray has delivered his last pint and litre of milk, carton of cream and other foodstuffs. On his Facebook farewell, Adrian admitted that as a 15-year-old boy helping his father on his rounds, he didn’t imagine that he would end up running the business himself, but 33 years later, Adrian is now retiring for health reasons. ‘I am unable to continue with the business due to many years of knee issues, culminating in a total knee
replacement,’ he said with a sense of regret. His milk rounds brought him many years of camaraderie and friendship, craic and banter with hundreds of customers from all walks of life, along with some challenges and eventful situations! A new chapter begins for Adrian now, who wishes all the best to his many customers – who have since become friends. ‘It’s certainly not goodbye as I'm sure I'll see you all around in the future,’ he concluded.

Junk Kouture 2018 Lisa Varley Maguire, a former pupil of Kentstown NS, has reached the finals of Junk Kouture 2018 with her shellfish designs. Lisa’s mother made an appeal on Facebook to get all locals voting for Lisa’s creations – and it worked, with votes piling in during February! Lisa and pals actually finished with the second highest number of votes in the whole of Ireland! Lisa’s Junk Kouture Shellfish highlights the problem of plastic waste on our beaches, so as well as creating fashion out of recycled materials, she was spreading a very important message about the overuse of plastics in today’s world. Next stop – The Helix for the finals!
