THE GRAND GESTURE By Deborah McAndrew Freely adapted from The Suicide by Nikolai Erdman Directed by Conrad Nelson Tuesday 15 – Saturday 19 October 7.30pm Simeon Duff is working class, unemployed and desperate. His wife works. He’s lost all self esteem. He’s on the scrap heap and wants to end it all … and so begins this brilliantly insane comedy from Dukes favourites Northern Broadsides. When word gets out that Duff is going to top himself, a host of ne’er-do-wells crawl out of the woodwork, each wanting to claim his grand gesture for their ‘noble cause’. Let’s face it, why waste a death? But which cause shall it be … love, politics, religion, or the rising price of fish?

BOX OFFICE 01524 598500 |

Theatre in The Rake Northern Broadsides in Partnership with Harrogate Theatre present

Will the disillusioned Duff go through with it? Will he really top himself for a dubious cause? Is he worth it? The suspense will kill you, if you don’t die laughing first. Conrad Nelson (A Government Inspector) directs a large cast of charismatic Northern actor-musicians in a riotous evening of comic mayhem and exquisite farce, complete with a gypsy band and heavenly choir. Think Rising Damp meets Monty Python with a pinch of Mrs Brown’s Boys.

Theatre in The Rake The Dukes and Live at LICA Present A 1927 Presentation

Welcome to the Bayou, a part of the city feared and loathed wherein lies the infamous Bayou Mansions; a sprawling stinking tenement block, where curtain-twitchers and peeping-toms live side by side, and the wolf... is always at the door. When Agnes Eaves and her daughter arrive late one night, does it signal hope in this hopeless place, or has the real horror only just begun? Seamlessly synchronising live music, performance and storytelling with stunning films and animation this is the wickedly twisted international hit tale from the multiple award-winning company behind Between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea. Like a giant novel burst into life, 1927 invite you on a theatrical journey of startling originality.

“Crouch’s finest work to date. Delivers an excellent explication of the Twelfth Night plot… but it does much more than that.” Daily Telegraph

Written and performed by Tim Crouch Friday 18 October 1.30pm & Saturday 19 October 4pm I’ll be revenged on the whole pack of you Tim Crouch re-imagines Twelfth Night in a brilliant one-man show that unlocks Shakespeare’s play and tells a timeless story of bullying, prudery and practical jokes. I, Malvolio is a charged, hilarious and sometimes unsettling rant from a man adrift in front of a cruel audience. Part abject clown, part theatre-hating disciplinarian, Malvolio asks his audience to explore the pleasure we take in other people’s suffering. A show for anyone who has ever been told off, called names or fallen in love with the wrong person. Co-commissioned by Brighton Festival and Singapore Arts Festival. Supported by BAC.

Performances of I, Malvolio will take place at Live at LICA’s Nuffield Theatre on the Lancaster University campus. Tickets are available from The Dukes or Live at LICA box offices. Discounted web-advance tickets are only available via

See the city in a whole new light this autumn, with a week of events celebrating Lancaster’s buildings and open spaces.

LIGHT UP THE WATERWAYS Tuesday 29 & Wednesday 30 October Discover the stories and heritage of our waterways and their often overlooked ecology, with illuminated installations along the canal leading towards the Grade 1 Listed Lune Aqueduct.

LIGHT UP THE STREETS Friday 1 November Take a stroll through the city for a unique night-time art experience animating our beautiful buildings and squares. Discover new stories along the trail, with a string of music, dance, theatre and film events.

LIGHT UP THE SKIES The Fireworks Spectacular Saturday 2 November Lancaster’s magical extravaganza of fireworks, which lights up the historic landscape and skyline of the city, is one of the finest displays in the north. This year the fireworks will be fired from the roof of Lancaster’s medieval castle.

Keep an eye out for a host of family-friendly events and activities taking place throughout the week in venues, galleries, museums and shops throughout the city. For more information on call 01524 582394 or visit

3 x NORBER Peter Osborne, Paul Rogers & Elizabeth Burns 2 – 15 September A painter, a photographer and a poet respond to the Norber Erratics on Ingleborough, offering three unique views of this extraordinary local landscape.

Beyond the glossy and marketable, the real spirit of surrealism is still a search for mystery and magic. David Grimbleby’s work channels these elements in an intriguing way.

Adrian Jones 16 September – 13 October The blurring of emotional memory. A collection of moments from a three-year journey taken with a faerie found lost in a French garden.
