MEN’S RUGBY 2013 NSCRO National Championship

2013 NSCRO National Championship

What a year it has been for Duke Men’s Rugby. This year started with Nico Rice coming into my office and asking if the club could look for a new coach as he felt that it was time to move in a new direction. This decision turned out to be the greatest move, as the club reorganized and moved into the National Small College Rugby Organization and hired former Furman University Assistant Coach Mike Morgan. Mike was just the spark that the team needed to move them forward down the track of success. With a mix of seven players from outside the United States and over twenty players from around the country, Mike molded a team that blew its way through their competition and ended the year with a 15-2 record and a berth to the National Championship to play St. John’s College. To put this season in prospective, this team lost to North Carolina by a score of 99-0 just three years ago. This season is a tribute to the hard work, dedication, and perservenance of the Seniors on the team. I would like to thank Disque Deane, Colin Howard, Rory Makhema, Nico Rice, Franco Signorini, and Nick Wellner for their undying commitment to this team. I would also like to thank Coach Morgan for his vision of what could be, Dr. Ron Olson for taking care of the players, and Alex Marse for traveling with and documenting their fine achievement. I would also like to extend a special thank you to the Gorter Family funding for allowing the team to have this extraordinary opportunity. Lastly, thank you to the donors who allowed the entire team to travel and provided the extra ammenities to make their Nationals experience one they will remember for their entire lives.

“The Duke Men's Club Rugby team traveled to Glendale, Colorado this year for the National Small College Rugby Organization's (NSCRO) National Championship. Facing the toughest competition of the year, the Duke squad bonded through two hard-faught rugby matches along with off-the-pitch meetings and team dinners. The trip fostered team unity around an impressive senior class and has motivated all of the returning players to prepare for a huge 2013-14 campaign.” Scott Cara, President, Duke Rugby
