Accreditation Visits Completed! Catherine Kuhn, MD

One of the most important aspects of running a training program is maintaining its accreditation with the Accreditation Council on Graduate Medical Education (ACGME). In the past year, all of our accredited programs have gone through site visits. This requires an enormous amount of work for preparation of documents, organization of the meetings with the site visitors, and covering the clinical work while the meetings take place. Last week the Core Program, Pediatric Fellowship, and Critical Care Fellowships were reviewed. Earlier in the fall, the Pain Fellowship, and Underseas and Hyperbaric Medicine Fellowship underwent their reviews. The Cardiothoracic Anesthesiology program participated in an experimental review process as well. Many thanks to the program directors, program coordinators, staff assistants, faculty and trainees for their hard work and participation in these important site visits. I also appreciate the assistance of the faculty who covered clinical cases, and the CRNAs who helped with relieving the trainees so that the residents and faculty could meet with the site visitors. We will learn the results of these reviews in the spring, and anticipate that the ACGME will recognize the quality of our programs!

Anesthesia Benefit for Duke CRNA Global Health: Save The Date! The CRNAs will be hosting their 2nd annual benefit on January 28, 2012 at Bay 7 at American Tobacco, Downtown Durham. Proceeds from the evening go to pay for airfare as they send people on medical mission trips to Ghana, Uganda, Haiti, etc.

Annual Holiday Canned Goods Donation Jessica Meyers, MD

The Holidays are soon approaching and at this time of the year, when we all pause to give thanks for all of the amazing gifts that we have, we also think about those in the community that are struggling. Each year, the anesthesia residents/ faculty/staff have collected canned goods to be donated to the Foodbank of Central Carolina. Boxes will placed in various locations around the 5th Floor of the HAFS building. We will be delivering the food on December 17th, 2011. This year, in ADDITION to the Foodbank (via the suggestion of Dr. Wahl), we will be donating to PORCH (People Offering Relief for Chapel Hill and Carrboro Homes) which stocks the shelves of 6 local food pantries and helps those right in our own backyard. We have a wonderful and generous group of residents/faculty/CRNAs/ staff...please donate what you can! For more information on PORCH - www.porchnc.org or the Central Carolina Food Bank - www.foodbankcenc.org.
