Thank You for Another Stellar ASA I would like to thank all of our alumni, faculty, staff and friends who were able to attend Duke Anesthesiology's 24th Annual ASA Alumni Reception in Washington, D.C. Our reception was held in Union Station's Columbus Club where our guests were greeted by a red carpet that was nicely illuminated with our Duke Anesthesiology logo for all at Union Station to see. Formerly the fancy soda fountain room, the Columbus Club's beautiful clerestory windows and brass chandeliers that accented the hand painted traceries of classical Pompeian artwork was the perfect backdrop for our Duke friends and family to reconnect. The evening culminated with an awards presentation given by our Chairman, Mark Newman, MD and the announcement of our 2013 DREAM Innovation Grant (DIG) recipients delivered by our Vice Chair of Research, David Warner, MD. Please enjoy photos from the event here. As we plan for next year's Duke ASA Alumni Reception in San Francisco, CA, we would value your feedback on what you'd like to see at the event or a venue you would like to recommend. Please make your recommendations here! A special thanks to all of the faculty who stayed behind to cover the OR’s and call coverage so that others could attend the ASA and to all of the staff who help me make the ASA Alumni Reception possible: Tiffany Nickel, Gloria Howard, Cheryl Stetson, Irene Kontje, Adam Hartz, and Chris Keith. Thank you again for your support to Duke Anesthesiology! Below are a few highlights from this year's ASA and Alumni Reception that we thought you might enjoy. We look forward to celebrating with you again next year in San Francisco! Sincerely,

Elizabeth Perez, RN, BSN Read online.

NIH Loan Repayment Program You do the research. NIH will repay your student loans. That is the idea behind the National Institutes of Health Loan Repayment Programs (LRPs). NIH wants to encourage outstanding health professionals to pursue careers in biomedical, behavioral, social, and clinical research. If you commit at least two years to conducting qualified research funded by a domestic nonprofit organization or U.S. federal, state, or local government entity, NIH may repay up to $35,000 of your qualified student loan debt per year, including most undergraduate, graduate, and medical school loans. Loan repayment benefits are in addition to the institutional salary you receive for your research.

If you are or will be conducting qualified research funded by a domestic nonprofit institution outside NIH, you may be eligible for one of the five extramural LRPs:

Clinical Research

Pediatric Research

Health Disparities Research

Contraception and Infertility Research

Clinical Research for Individuals from Disadvantaged Backgrounds

You may submit only one LRP application to NIH in any fiscal year, even though your research may be appropriate for more than one of the programs. Important Deadlines and Reminders:

November 15, 2012 Deadline to submit LRP applications to NIH.

Applicant submits directly to NIH.

Duke LRP form is required by ORA, to provide institutional verification to NIH – DEADLINE IS 11/29

Duke LRP form requires dept. business manager & chair signatures, available on ORA website -
