Our eight categorical interns began institutional orientation on Wednesday, June 24th. After three days of rules, regulations, whatto-do’s and how-do-you-do’s, they scattered to the four winds of the medical center, looking to put their four years of medical schooling into practice. Having earned that “M.D.” after their names, they are now earning (and learning) the generalized patient care responsibilities that will help prepare them for their clinical anesthesia training in July 2010. Please welcome: • Jacob Nadler, of Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis • Abimbola “Bola” Opanuga, from Emory School of Medicine • Quintin Quinones, homegrown at Duke Medicine • Elizabeth Malinzak, another homegrown product of Duke Medicine • Miles Berger, from the University of California at San Francisco • Torijaun Dallas, hailing from the great state of Louisiana and LSUNew Orleans Medical School • Christy Crockett, from UNC School of Medicine 9 miles away • Elizabeth Crafts, who earned her MD at the University of Rochester

They are joined by six class members who did their internships elsewhere: • Willem Bok, a Duke med student who did a transitional year at Deaconess Hospital in Spokane, Washington • Weronika “Nika” Crescini, a Mayo product, who interned at Mayo in Minnesota • Jessica Meyers, of Wright State med, and late of a preliminary medicine internship in Columbus, Ohio • Brian Ohlendorf, from UMDNJ-Robert Wood Johnson in the Garden State of New Jersey, and a transitional year with Atlantic Health Systems • Scott Runyon, who hails from Penn State Med, and who did preliminary medicine in Hershey (yes, of chocolate fame) Continues on page 4.

ASA Hotel Room Block Information Mark F. Newman, MD

In order to maximize our impact while minimizing the overall departmental cost, we will again have a hotel arrangement this year that will allow us to consolidate and take advantage of group purchase to reduce our food and room rental expenses. In order to accomplish this we have a room block at the Renaissance Hotel in New Orleans. You will need to book your room by visiting the site listed below. The link includes our reservation code for our room rate. I expect that we will fully reserve in our block first before using any outside hotels. If you have any questions or concerns please see me. The Marriott Renaissance in New Orleans has reduced the Duke Anesthesiology room block rate from $259/night to $215/night which is the ASA room rate. If you have already made your reservation it will be changed to reflect the new $215 rate. If you have any questions or problems contact Gloria Howard at gloria. howard@duke.edu or 681-6493. http://www.marriott.com/hotels/travel/msydt?groupCode=dukduka&app= resvlink&fromDate=10/15/09&toDate=10/22/09
