Duke Blue Devils win SCA Echo Jeopardy Madhav Swaminathan, MD

ASA Hotel Room Block Information Mark F. Newman, MD

In order to maximize our impact while minimizing the overall departmental cost, we will again have a hotel arrangement this year that will allow us to consolidate and take advantage of group purchase to reduce our food and room rental expenses. In order to accomplish this we have a room block at the Renaissance Hotel in New Orleans. You will need to book your room by visiting the site listed below. The link includes our reservation code for our room rate. I expect that we will fully reserve in our block first before using any outside hotels. If you have any questions or concerns please see me. The Marriott Renaissance in New Orleans has reduced the Duke Anesthesiology room block rate from $259/night to $215/night which is the ASA room rate. If you have already made your reservation it will be changed to reflect the new $215 rate. If you have any questions or problems contact Gloria Howard at gloria.howard@duke.edu or 6816493. The Echo Jeopardy event at this year’s Society of Cardiovascular Anesthesiologists Annual Meeting in San Antonio, TX, was marked by an exciting victory for the Duke Blue Devils team represented by Burkhard Mackensen, Jonathan Mark and Madhav Swaminathan. They came from behind to win the Final Jeopardy round, beating the other two teams, including the reigning champions, Little Empire, featuring the New York trio of Jack Shanewise (Columbia), Steven Konstadt (Maimonides) and Nik Skubas (Cornell), and the Gamecocks, featuring Scott Reeves (Chair, MUSC), Tom Burch (MUSC) and Mohammed Mihnaj (Chicago). Congratulations to all three Blue Devils, who stole the show and won bragging rights for Duke Anesthesiology!

Room Change for Anesthesiology Resident Lectures and Grand Rounds

Next month, Duke Appreciation, the annual celebration of faculty and staff, will include several changes that reflect the need to balance the reality of the economic environment with the recognition of our many accomplishments throughout the year. Many of the traditional events such as the Duke Family Fun Run/Walk, Duke Night Out at Local Restaurants and Duke Family Night at Durham Bulls Athletic Park will continue this year. We will also be including a few new events, including a free Family Day at the Nasher Museum of Art and a Duke Gardens Anniversary celebration open to faculty, staff and family members that includes facepainting and live music. A full schedule of events is available on the Duke Appreciation website at: http://www.hr.duke.edu/appreciation/

Due to renovations in Duke North, the Resident Conference and Grand Rounds lectures will move to the Medical Student Amphitheatre in Duke South for the weeks of May 6th and 13th. The amphitheatre is next to the Duke South food court, in room 916. Lectures will be held at the usual time, beginning at 6:30 A.M. for the Resident Conference and 7:15 A.M. for Grand Rounds. Lectures will return to DN 2001 on May 20th.
