World Youth Day (WYD) is an international event organized by the Catholic Church, uniting young people from all over the World who are Catholic, as well as other denominations of faith. The event is presided by the Holy Father and it occurs every two or three years. WYD began in 1984, on Palm Sunday. Pope John Paul II asked youth from all over the world to come to Rome to celebrate the Year of Redemption. They responded with great enthusiasm, surprising all expectations. In 1985, the Pope wrote a letter to all the youth of the world and later that year he officially initiated the World Youth Day.
