RACECOURSE CHARACTERISTICS AINTREE

L.H. Triangular. The Martell Foxhunters' Chase over a flat 23/4 miles is the only Hunters' Chase that takes place over the unique Aintree fences. The course is 21/4 miles long, includes sixteen obstacles, and with many runners each year, good fortune, accurate fencing and stamina are essential on this galloping track. The Mildmay Course is rectangular and consists of eight fences over 1‰ miles. The tight bends on this flat course favour the handy type. Clerk of the Course: Mr A. J. A. Tulloch Tel No: (0151) 5232600 Stabling: 162 boxes allocated in strict rotation. A stable lads Hostel and facilities are available on the course for up to 100 stable staff.

ASCOT

R.H. Triangular. An essentially galloping course of 13/4 miles with ten stiff fences. There are two fences in the straight followed by a stiff uphill run-in, so stamina is of vital importance, particularly in testing conditions. Clerk of the Course: Mr C. Stickels Tel No: (01344) 878502 Stabling: 175 boxes (Free). Wood shavings, straw or paper available. Trainers are requested to book stabling in advance for one day standing and overnight stabling. Free dormitory accommodation for stable lads and girls, which should be booked when reserving stables. Tel: (01344) 625630.

AYR

L.H. Oval. The Course is 1‰ miles in circumference with nine fences to negotiate. It is a flat galloping track with fair fences and a run-in of 210 yards which often suits front runners. Clerk of the Course: Katherine Self Tel No: (0870) 8505666 Stabling: 175 stables filled by rotation. Tel: (0870) 8505666.

BANGOR-ON-DEE

L.H. Circular. Ideal for front runners as the 1‰ mile circuit is perfectly flat and has no straight as such, but instead a host of tight bends. Its proximity to the River Dee means that watering is always available and with the exception of the open ditch approaching the final turn, the nine fences are not difficult. Clerk of the Course: Mr Ed Gretton Tel No: (01978) 780323 Stabling: 82 stables available. Trainers requiring overnight stabling must telephone (01978) 780323 by 12 noon on the day prior to racing with details of their requirements.

CARLISLE

R.H. Pear-shaped. An undulating and very stiff track of 1 mile 5 furlongs which suits the long-striding galloper, particularly in testing conditions. The track comprises of nine fences and an uphill run-in of 300 yards, suiting those who need a good test of stamina. Clerk of the Course: Mr J. E. Fenwicke-Clennell Tel No: (01228) 554700 Stabling: 98 boxes at the course allocated on arrival. Early arrivals must be notified in advance. For overnight stabling accommodation please telephone (01228) 554700.

CARTMEL

L.H. Oval. A very tight circuit with six stiff fences, over a distance of 1 mile 1 furlong. The run-in of about four furlongs is not surprisingly the longest in the country. The approach to the finish is mainly on the turn, similar to the remainder of the track, thus enabling the handy type to hold an advantage. Clerk of the Course: Mr A. J. A. Tulloch Tel No: (0151) 5232600 or Cartmel (01539) 536340 (Racedays) Stabling: Stabling and lads/lasses accommodation is limited so prior booking is advised. Tel: (01539) 536494.

CATTERICK

L.H. Oval. A sharp, undulating circuit of 1 mile 1 furlong which undoubtedly favours the handy, front-running type. There are nine fences which are comparatively easy and a run-in of 240 yards. Clerk of the Course: Mr Jonjo Sanderson Tel No: (01748) 811478 Stabling: Overnight accommodation should be booked. Boxes are bedded with paper, shavings and straw and filled in rotation upon arrival. Tel: (01748) 811478

CHELTENHAM

L.H. Oval. The Old and the New course are both undulating. The former is a 1‰ mile course with nine fences whereas the New course is a furlong further with an extra fence. Both circuits are very testing and ability to stay the trip is essential. The fences are stiff but well-constructed. The final half-mile is all uphill and even with drainage improvements reducing the chances of soft ground, stamina and courage are often the deciding factors. Clerk of the Course: Mr Simon Claisse Tel No: (01242) 537664 Stabling: 203 boxes, paper or shavings. Trainers are asked to reserve overnight stabling by 12 noon the day before racing, stating bedding preference and the accommodation required for lads/girls. Apply Stable Manager on (01242) 537602 or 521950

CHEPSTOW

L.H. Oval. A 2-mile circuit with eleven fences comprising of two long straights and two sharp turns. The course is undulating but there are few obstacles that continually catch horses out. The home straight is five furlongs long with five fences to negotiate culminating with a 250 yard run-in. Chepstow favours the long-striding front-runner, particularly when underfoot conditions are testing and stamina becomes essential. Clerk of the Course: Mr Tim Long Tel No: (01291) 622260 Stabling: 106 boxes, allotted on arrival. Limited accommodation for lads/lasses. Tel: (01291) 622260

EXETER

R.H. Oval. The circuit is 2 miles comprising of eleven fences and an uphill run-in of 300 yards. It is a very undulating course which will suit the well-balanced type, though when conditions are testing, the home straight and run-in provide a real test of character. Clerk of the Course: Mr B. Johnson Tel No: (01392) 832599 Stabling: 90 boxes on course allocated on arrival. Overnight stabling at course must be booked on Tel: (01392) 832599 by 12 noon on the day before racing.

FAKENHAM

L.H. Square. A very sharp, undulating track of just 1 mile in circumference with six easy fences. There is only one fence in the straight followed by an uphill run-in of 200 yards. The handy, front-running individual is particularly suited to this course. Clerk of the Course: Mr D. J. Hunter Tel No: (01328) 862388 Stabling: 70 boxes available. Tel: (01328) 862388 for overnight accommodation for horses and staff by noon the day before racing.

FOLKESTONE

R.H. Oval. This undulating circuit comprises of eight fences over a circumference of 11 furlongs. The obstacles are not difficult and the course would not be ideally suited to the long-striding galloper. Clerk of the Course: Mr Neil Mackenzie Ross Tel No: (01342) 831720 or (01303) 266407 on pre-racedays Stabling: 93 stables are available. Tel: (01342) 834800 before 12 noon on the day before racing.

FONTWELL

Figure of eight. The chase course features seven fences, with an open ditch, all constructed on the `x' of the figure-ofeight. The run-in is 230 yards long, uphill and slightly to the left. An undulating course with tight turns which unquestionably favours the nippy, front-runner. Clerk of the Course: Mr G. Stickels Tel No: (01243) 543335 Stabling: Trainers are not required to order stabling but the 90 boxes will be filled in rotation on arrival. If horses are to arrive the day before racing and lads/lasses accommodation is required please telephone: (01243) 543335.

HAYDOCK

L.H. Oval. The track covers 13 furlongs including ten stiff drop fences. Haydock is a galloping course with a long runin that patently suits the safe jumper and long-striding individual. Clerk of the Course: Mr K. Tellwright Tel No: (01942) 725963 Stabling: 124 boxes, paper and shavings available. Tel: (01942) 725963 by 12 noon the day before racing to reserve overnight stabling, stating preference of bedding and the accommodation required for lads/girls.

HEREFORD

R.H. Square. There are nine fairly stiff fences to negotiate on this 1‰ mile circuit. The course is relatively flat with easy turns with a 300 yard run-in that would tend to suit the handy type. Clerk of the Course: Gemma Charrington Tel No: (01432) 273560 Stabling: 105 boxes allotted on arrival. Tel: (01432) 273560 on the day before the meeting if overnight stabling is required.
