The last year has seen a lot of changes, firstly I have moved to a new studio, the old Spode factory, in Stoke on Trent. This has been a great step forward for my work. They have kept some fantastic features of the old business, my personal favourite being the clocking in card machine, with the old time cards just around the corner of my studio. The whole decor is really inspirational and suits my style of art perfectly. Also to see other creative businesses, who are also located in the building is fantastic, not only for creative inspiration but shows that Stoke is a hub of creativity and culture. If you have yet to come over to say hello, come over, see the work getting made and immerse yourself in a real creative buzz in this iconic factory. On top of this, I am also collaborating with some other artist on a new project to exhibit in late 2018. This is something completely different from my usual work, and not to give too much away the exercise is to see the colour in the world.

Experimental Paintings

This a painting based on a particular world map. That map is from a board-game I played as a child, exploring the ‘magic’ of the second world war stripped of context and violence. ’Indoctrination’ is an attempt to realize the relationship betweenchildhood innocence and the cynical adult, by questioning the values that would frame warfare in such a way. This work is part of a larger philosophical analysis of the values of modern western society, I challenge the notion that a war that involved the deaths of millions should be re-contextualized and packaged in ‘user-friendly’ fashion and subsequently marketed at the most impressionable of us. marketed at the most impressionable of us. lack discernment and are incapable of questioning there validity.

2015-2017 Experimental Paintings

This image has been reworked and is somewhat of an experimental painting, very different to my usual style. Alan Flock was intended to be an alter-ego, designated to work in an alternative style (with numerological significance). The name Alan comes from my Granddad who was also an artist. After he died I inherited a few canvases from his house. This painting was painted on one of those very canvases. The second name Flock is in reference to the band ‘A Flock of Seagulls’, who’s music I listed to constantly while painting the two Alan Flock paintings. Everything down to the colour pallet was deliberately different to my process. The final layer is oil over resin, the end result will be unknown.

There was a previous incarnation to this painting which was damaged during an exhibition in London. I chose to rework the painting rather than repair it. I was never truly happy with the first incarnation, which I began work on back in 2013 just after finishing my University course. The work has now taken on an ironic disposition bearing in mind the title, the legendary Firebird has returned to symbolise rebirth, this is quite relevant to my current practice when you consider the stylistic changes I have made since 2013. Imagine that the boundaries of, what we think of as reality, are not always constant. perceived constants are influenced by the movement phases of astral bodies and cyclic patterns of decay and rebirth. This triptych is an attempt, by me, to better comprehend the ever shifting relationship between perception and the forces which act upon it. Each painting is named in reference to 3 of the 4 Yuga’s in Hindu belief.
