THE INTERCONTINENTAL ADVERTISING CUP IS A VAGABOND

Jure Apih We have applauded the temperamental flamenco in Valencia, Spain, we have almost got lost in fog on the sunny Chief Executive side of the Alps in Bled, Slovenia, we have been through a »No Problem!« adventure in the hospitable, but still Officer, ICAC scarred Sarajevo, and we were so amazed by the capital of civilizations Istanbul and its potent cultures-cocktail that we have remained there for three years in a row. And it was expectations what took us to Belgrade now. There is no other city that I would have so many memories of, both sweet and bitter. We had to leave it a quarter of a century ago in order to come back and to begin a new story. The idea behind the Intercontinental Advertising Cup has grown out of experience. Since the world has split into Anglo-Saxon and everybody else’s halves, it has been out of joint by default. We can only communicate, if we speak Americanese and as a consequence we are at a disadvantage every time when we wish to express or defend ourselves. The Cannes juries have less than 4 seconds to rate any single entry. It augurs poorly for stuff they do not know, or even do not understand the language and culture an entry is based on. The globalization’s tsunami has enveloped the world and the general truisms have travelled happily with it – so that now only those with firm roots in their land and culture can still manage to stand up to it by using the idiom that is exclusively their own creative heritage. Genius loci, the spirit of the place, is the leading light of the Intercontinental Cup, and in spite of all the global greats it dares to celebrate those heroes who, like legendary Achilles, know how to draw their creative strength from the soil under their feet. I really have no idea, if there is another comparable place, that is so small, yet so blessed with inspiration and spirit, or that has composed so many heart-breaking songs, gave birth to countless tragic and heroic tales, nonrepeatable curses and jaw-dropping practical jokes. The Romans, who called Singidunum a home, too, knew well that every peopled place has its unique spirit, the Genius loci, that protects and preserves its unique identity and that inspires artists who create there. From the Schwarzwald and from under Mount Triglav (Tricorno in Italian, and theTriple Head in clumsy English) spring two major waterways, the Danube – die Donau (German), Dunaj (Slovenian), Duna (Hungarian), Dunav (Croatian), (»Dunav«, Serbian and Bulgarian), la Dun rea (Romanian) and (»Dunai«, Ukrainian) – and the Sava, two immense rivers with endless tributaries that all collect and transport the memories of European places and cultures. As they merge under the huge wooden rafts in the heart of Belgrade, gipsy trumpets salute their joint might. Genius loci, the inspiration streaming from five continents will set house there this time around. A year from now, the river flow may take it forward, but it may also choose to stay a while. Michael Conrad began his career in advertising as copywriter at Young & Rubicam Frankfurt in 1968, became Creative Director at Ogilvy & Mather Frankfurt in 1970 and started with some partners TBWA Frankfurt in 1972. He co-founded Lürzer, Conrad Frankfurt in 1975 and merged in 1980 with Leo Burnett Germany. In 1982 the agency was re-named Michael Conrad & Leo Burnett. He moved in 1986 to Chicago as President and Chief Creative Officer of Leo Burnett International and was named in 1996 Vice Chairman and Chief Creative Officer of Leo Burnett Worldwide. Under his leadership 27 Leo Burnett agencies were named “Agency Of The Year” in their countries. In 2000 Advertising Age named Leo Burnett Worldwide “Global Agency Of The Year”. In 2001 Leo Burnett Worldwide was the “Most Awarded Agency In The World” at the Gunn Report. Michael retired from Leo Burnett in 2003. He chaired many juries of local, regional and global advertising festivals and is honorary member of the Art Directors’ Clubs of Germany, Austria and Europe. With the ADC Germany he founded the “Berlin School of Creative Leadership” at Steinbeis University and serves as its President. He lives in Zürich, does some consulting in marketing and communication.

SANTOSH PADHI Chief Creative Officer & Co-Founder, Taproot India, Mumbai

Popularly known as ‘Paddy’, Santosh Padhi started his advertising career 2 decade back. An art graduate from Mumbai, he started his carrier with DDB, than a good fruitful 10-year stint at Leo Burnett, where he was an Executive Creative Director and the National Head of Art. 5 years ago he start his new creative venture ‘Taproot India’. Paddy holds the record for the most number of Cannes Lions (20) by an individual Indian creative from India. With over 200 international and over 300 local awards as well as multiple Grand Prix titles under his belt, He is in top 10 Creative’s in the world according to the 2013 Cannes survey 2013 and top 40 Asians to look for, according to Campaign Asia’s survey in 2013. Couple of months back he was nominated as the South Asian »Creative Person Of The Year« by Campaign Asia.

ALEXANDRA TAYLOR Member of D&AD Board, consultant freelance Art Director

She has over 200 entries in D&AD Annual, including 7 silver D&AD pencils, and 8 D&AD silver nominations. In ’92 she picked up best overall TV ad at Cannes. She also has a further 2 golds and 3 silver Cannes Lions. Appointed by her mentor Paul Arden to succeed him as head of art at Saatchi & Saatchi London. Followed by being made joint CD of Saatchi & Saatchi. She has also served time at Weiden & Kennedy as Creative Director. Alexandra is listed in D&ADs master class Art Direction book, which represents the best art directors of all time. She was the first woman in advertising to be nominated onto the D&AD Executive board (1998) and voted again onto the Board 2010. 2014 was asked by D&AD to join their bespoke programme with her Art of Art directional master classes. She is currently running a series of master classes through D&AD and is a consultant freelance Art Director.

SOPHIE SCHOENBURG Copywriter, AlmapBBDO, Brazil

Half Austrian, quarter Argentinean, the other quarter Brazilian, Sophie was also a mix of wills on leaving school: architecture, fashion design or restoration? By chance she opted for ad school and got her first internship at the best agency of the time. A career she had stumbled upon almost by accident became a passion. And then a solid career that made her mum and dad proud (at the end of the day isn’t that what really matters?) After working in several agencies she began at Almap BBDO where she has been for the past 19 years, which is rare, if not bizarre, for the ad industry. One of the most prestigious national copywriters she’s also proud of her international performance: 17 Cannes lions, 10 Clios, 2 Grand Prix at Fiap, London, El Ojo, Yellow Pencil at D&AD among others. In 2009 was a jury member at Cannes in the film category.

MARTIN SPILLMANN Chief Creative Officer, Leo Burnett Continental Western Europe

Martin started his career in advertising at the Zurich University of the Arts (ZHdK) where he received his degree as graphic designer. After that he went on to work for various creative advertising agencies as Art Director/Creative Director in Switzerland and New York. In 2002, together with his business partner Peter Felser, he founded the agency Spillmann/Felser/Leo Burnett, which became one of Switzerland‘s leading advertising agencies, both in size and reputation. In 2013 the agency made a name change to Leo Burnett Schweiz AG, and with that Martin took on a new position in the Leo Burnett Network as Chief Creative Officer for Leo Burnett Continental Western Europe. He is a Board Member and former President of the Swiss ADC and the Art Directors Club of Europe. Besides that he is a lecturer at the ADC/BSW-Creative School, Zurich. Martin has judged and won all major awards, including the Cup, Gold at the Cannes Lions, Clios and the Art Directors Club of Europe.

NAOKI ITO Chief Creative Officer & Founder of Party Tokyo

Born in Shizuoka, Japan, in 1971. He graduated from Waseda university. Ito has worked on clients such as Nike, Google, Sony and MUJI for creative direction. His solution for communication design involving physicality and experiment is highly regarded world-wide with many awards to his name. Ito has won over 200 awards at home and abroad. Ito’s most recognized work, the real-time interactive documentary for Sagami Condom ‘Love Distance’ won Gold in Film Lion for the first time in 13 years as Japanese creative. Besides from being responsible for winning awards, he has also served as a judge at over 10 domestic and international awards including D&AD and NY ADC. Recently he has worked on “OMOTE 3D SHASHIN KAN”, the world first 3D printing photo booth, »mini to Go”, the global campaign for MUJI to Go and “PARTY Not There”, the exhibition at Ginza Graphic Gallery. In 2011 and 2012, The Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) appointed Ito as the Creative Director of the Cool Japan Strategy Promotion Program. Ito is appointed as Professor at Kyoto University of Art and Design.

MILKA POGLIANI Creative Consultant and Advisor

Milka started her career by joining a group of directors with RAI (Italian State Television) as a screen-writer. After a few years she accepted a job offer as a copywriter in advertising. She reaped her experience by working for international networks, such as JWT and Benton & Bowles. In 1979, she started to work with McCann Erickson as a senior copywriter, then as Executive Creative Director and then in her current role. Until 2011 she was a member of McCann Worldgroup Management Board. She has taken part on the Juries of the most important international advertising festivals (Cannes, Clio, Cresta, Andy Awards, Eurobest, New York Festivals and Golden Drum). As a Creative Director she has won many international awards including the Grand Prix, gold, silver and bronze Lions at Cannes Festival and other awards including the New York Festivals, Cresta International, London International Advertising Awards, Art Directors Club of New York, Art Directors Club of Europe, Eurobest (London), besides prestigious Italian creative awards. From 1999 to 2002 Milka was Chairman of the Art Directors Club of Italy and until 2010 Chairman European Creative Council EMEA (Europe, Middle East, Africa).

JOHANNES NEWRKLA Founder & CEO, Bluetango, Austria

Johannes is CEO of Bluetango, a Viennese advertising agency he set up upon completion of his studies in architecture, advertising and marketing. As a Consultant and Creative, Johannes is a true European and bordercrosser, and a founding member of the ADCE, which he presided over for eight years. Today he is a board member and treasurer. For twenty years Johannes worked as a partner with Demner, Merlicek & Bergmann, the most awarded agency in the country at the time. He introduced the “networking” idea to small agencies that worked together with his Vienna-based team. Johannes has won many national and international awards for his campaigns, including the Golden Venus – Austria’s highest creative award – several times.

JUAN SÁNCHEZ Chief Creative Officer, TBWA/Spain

With a degree in Advertising from Universidad Complutense of Madrid, he began working as a copy-writer in TBWA’s Madrid agency in 1997. In 2001 he joined DDB Madrid as Creative Director. He rejoined TBWA as Creative Executive Director in 2006 and took over as Chief Creative Officer of the TBWA Group, Madrid in 2009. Over these years he has worked for clients such as Sony PlayStation, Canon, Telefonica, Philips, McDonald’s and Adidas, winning awards in all the international festivals, like Cannes, One Show, D&Ad, El Sol, FiAP, Eurobest, Epica, Clio, etc. He has been a jury member in festivals such as the Club de Creativos, El Sol, New York Festival and El ojo de Iberoamérica. Since his re-entry in 2006 as chief creative director for TBWA, it has been named one of the three top Spanish agencies. According to the magazine “Anuncios”, TBWA succeeded in being the most awarded Spanish agency in all national and international festivals in the years 2012 and 2013.

DUŠAN DRAKALSKI Regional Creative Director New Moment New Ideas Company Y & R, Macedonia

Dušan started his career in 1997 working for S Team Bates Saatchi & Saatchi, and currently holds the position of Regional Creative Director in New Moment New Ideas Company Y&R. Dušan’s work has been recognized at many award shows and festivals, including the Cannes, Eurobest, New York Festival, Epica, Golden Drum, Moscow International Advertising Festival and many other regional award shows. Dušan has been a member of different juries and is considered as one of the most creative and most experienced communication specialists in the Balkans who managed to create award-winning and memorable campaigns in this extremely challenging region, where the most recent one is a Titanium Lion at this year’s 60th Cannes Lions. Throughout his career he always strived for extremely high standards in his work and believes that passion must exist within every piece. His second calling is film directing.

As an executive creative director of Pristop, Aljoša Bagola has been creating the largest marketing communications projects in Slovenia and in the region for fourteen years. He has received over one hundred awards and recognitions at international and domestic advertising festivals. He is a lecturer at the Faculty of Social Sciences in Ljubljana, a columnist for Slovenia’s leading marketing magazine MM and a regular member of distinct advertising juries.

VANJA BLUMENŠAJN Creative Director, Señor, Croatia

Insisting on excellence since 1979. Over a decade in advertising. Seven years in national advertising festival jury (two of those as its President). Won probably all Croatian national and a nice record of international awards (Festo, idejaX, Effie, ADCC, Outward, ADCE, Red Dot, Golden drum, Eurobest, MIAF, SEMPL…). He's most proud of being voted Creative of the year (Sudnji dan) and winning the Creative agency of the year award in 2013 with Imago agency that he creatively led. In 2013 he decides it’s time for new challenges, quits Chief Creative Director position and starts an independent agency for communication and branding – Señor.

SLAVIMIR STOJANOVIC´ designer, Founder and Partner, Designis, Serbia

Slavimir was born in Belgrade, Yugoslavia in 1969. He studied at Design Higschool in Belgrade, at the Academy for Applied arts and Design and at HDK in Gotheborg, Sweden. Between 1992 and 1999 he worked at S Team Bates Saatchi & Saatchi. From 1999 to 2007 he lived in Ljubljana, Slovenia working at Kompas Design, Arih Advertising and his own Futro Creative Service Unit. From 2010 he works as a creative director at Communis DDB, Belgrade. More recently, he became a partner at Designis, design and branding agency, also in Belgrade. His work in the domain of visual communication, design and advertising has brought him more than 200 international awards, including: Epica, Cresta, Clio, Eurobest, Golden Drum, ADC, TDC, Brumen, Grifon, Global Award and numerous others. His work has been reviewed in prestigious world magazines, among which are Graphis, Print, Communication Arts, Computer Arts, How, Media Marketing, MMKreativ, Novum and others. His acts are in the collections at the Museum of Art and Advertising in Hamburg and the Museum of Posters in Warsaw.

ANJA RADULOVIC´ Creative Director, Leo Burnett / Belgrade

Upon returning from the United States where she gained a Bachelor of Arts in Theater Acting and Directing, Anja entered the world of advertising. Since then, Anja has relentlessly pursued creative, peoplecentered ideas. She started her creative directorship at Leo Burnett in 2009. Soon after, in 2010, Leo Burnett Belgrade became the Best Agency of the Adriatic Region at the Golden Drum. The agency continued with success, and helped Leo Burnett become the Best Network at the 2012 awards. Anja has won numerous international awards, including several Grand Prix, Gold, Silver, and Bronze Awards at award shows such as Eurobest, Golden Drum, Epica, London FAB Awards, The Cup, AICP Next Awards, EACA, etc. Anja has served as a member of the Multi Channel Jury at the Golden Drum, as well as at the New York Festivals.

BOJAN HADŽIHALILOVIC´ graphic designer, Creative Director, Fabrika, Bosnia and Herzegovina

Bojan was born 1964, is a Sarajevo based graphic designer and creative director of a Bosnia and Herzegovina design company called Fabrika. He graduated from the Sarajevo Academy of Fine Arts in 1989 and with his colleague Lejla Mulabegovic formed the designer group called TRIO Sarajevo in 1989. From its founding until April 1992, they have designed some 50 important projects, including record covers of some of the most popular rock bands from Bosnia and Herzegovina, numerous design projects at many festivals in the former Yugoslavia, design of books, newspapers and film posters. They have also taken part in numerous exhibits in the country and abroad (Moscow, Berlin and Sarajevo). During the siege of Sarajevo Bojan romaine in the city. With TRIO Bojan designed a serial of propaganda posters »The Aggression Against Bosnia« and designed the uniforms for all Bosnian athletes who competed at the Summer Olympics in Barcelona in 1992. Bojan currently works as a creative director of a marketing agency called Fabrika and often collaborates with East West Theatre Company for which he designed a large number of posters.

VLADIMIR C´OSIC´ Creative Director at McCann Belgrade

Vladimir graduated Dramaturgy at the University of Dramatic Arts in Belgrade. He is Film, TV and comic book writer and dramatist. He has worked in the advertising industry for the past eight years, three of as the Creative Director of McCann Beograd. Vladimir was member of the Grand Jury at the New York Advertising Festival in 2013. He is a winner of numerous local and international creative awards, including the first (and so far the only) Cannes Lion for Serbia, for the “You’re Not Alone” campaign in 2011. Director of feature-length documentary, »Rokumentarac«. Screenwriter of feature movie »Made in Yu.«

MILOŠ SIMIC´ He was born in 1971 in Belgrade where he finished his primary and secondary education. Miloš graduated at President of Communication Studies at the University of Malta. Between 1997 and 2004 he worked with several advertising IAA Serbia agencies, S Team Bates Saatchi and Saatchi, Communis and Emotion. In 2004 together with his partners Miloš established an event and video production company, Cyber Entertainment. In 2007 Miloš joined Grand Casino Belgrade as Marketing Director. In his career Miloš worked on several positions giving him a full insight on the whole communication process in marketing and advertising field. He was involved in public relations, event production, client service and creative direction. From 2013 Miloš is the President of IAA Serbian Chapter.

MARIJANA AGIC´-MOLNAR Managing Director at GfK Serbia

Born in 1973 in Belgrade. Graduated at Economic Faculty in Belgrade, specialized in Marketing, EMBA student at Sheffield University. Educated at Luton University with support of British Know How Fund scholarship. Started career just after graduation in 1996 in Mark-Plan. After two years, she switched to The Coca-Cola Company. At beginning of 2000, Marijana founded marketing research company Focus MR which was acquired by GfK at 2002. She leads GfK as of foundation. From 2013, Marijana is responsible for Adriatic region. At 2004, Marijana was selected to global GfK Excellence team – selected group of best GfK managers. Lecturer in Mokra Gora School of Management, Vicepresident of IAA Serbian Chapter. She stills love being marketer which allows her to observe the problem from many angles and provide the best marketing advice to the client. Still idealistically believe that faith in people is crucial to develop them to their maximum.

INTERCONTINENTAL ADVERTISING CUP ICAC, the Intercontinental Advertising CUP was established in 2007 by organizers of the world’s three biggest regional advertising festivals: Asia Pacific’s ADFEST, Ibero-American FIAP and New European Golden Drum. From the first year onwards the ADC*E, Art Director’s Club of Europe, is also a member.

DEDICATED TO GENIUS LOCI IS THE LEADING PRINCIPLE OF THE CUP The mission of The CUP is the affirmation of locally inspired creativity. The CUP is a global festival embracing local culture. The purpose of The CUP is not competition with any other advertising show, but a very new international concept that makes it possible for local creativity to be judged on a global scale by its local merit. Michael Conrad, former President and Chief Creative Officer of Leo Burnett Worldwide, and then founder and President of the Berlin School of Creative Leadership, nurtured The Cup all the way from its beginning to this year’s 7th edition.

ALL THE CUP FINALISTS HAVE BEEN PRE-SELECTED BY REGIONAL JURIES The Intercontinental Advertising Cup has a very special judging system in which only the best of the best get to compete; it judges only awarded and short-listed entries at participating continental festivals. The Cup jury therefore judges the shortest and at the same time probably the strongest selection of locally inspired creativity from all over the world. The Cup jury members come from regional festivals and are some of the world’s most awarded creative directors. They are able to recognize the local spirit of the best entries, too, and they have the authority to relate it to the others. The judging process is therefore fairer and guarantees equal opportunity to every entry regardless of its origin.

THE CUP COMPETITION All entries are grouped in 18 Best of Product and Service categories and at first judged regardless of their initial media appearance. In the second group Best of Media the jury selects the best work regardless of its product or service category. And in the third group Best of Ad making the craft skills are awarded. In every category 5 nominees are selected in each of 38 categories. At the end there are 38 winners of The Cup and one winner of The Grand Cup. The trophy is The CUP made of stainless steel with engraved names of jury members and also with the name of the winning agency.
