New homes for Christmas NEWS that Dublin City Council has taken ownership of over 90 housing units at Hampton Wood in Finglas will mean the Christmas gift of a home for 30 local families. The council agreed to take the 92 social housing homes after acquisition was facilitated by the National Housing Agency and funding was provided by the Department of Housing. It’s expected that 30 of the homes will be ready within weeks, allowing families to move in before Christmas. The units were bought for a reported €35 million and comprise 32 houses - eight four-beds and 24 three beds - and 60 apartments.

The apartments comprise six one-beds, 33 two-beds and 21 threebeds. The homes, some of which are still under construction, are believed to be earmarked for families currently on the Ballymun housing list. Dublin Lord Mayor, Nial Ring, said the news showed that Dublin City Council was leading the way in tackling the housing crisis. “Although the naysayers may scoff at 92 housing units, it's a fantastic positive message of hope to those on the housing list," he said. "These homes are currently under construction with nearly Continued on page 2

Local man’s artwork gets stamp of approval WHEN a Northside man visits his local post office these days he can be excused for having a broad smile on his face when he steps through the door. Brian Palm’s painting of the ‘RMS Leinster Exploding’ is being used on the current Irish postage stamp commemorating the sinking of the Mailboat Leinster on October 10, 1918, only one month before the First World War ended. Brian, who is originally from the US, said his regular visits to his local post office in Drumcondra have taken a “lively turn”. “I am now bringing my own stamps in to be hand franked by staff who all know me,” he told Northside People. “It has created a lot of good humour and laughter for all of us.

“I have lived in Drumcondra for 15 years and I am originally from America. I regularly send cards, letters and parcels abroad from the post office in Centra, Drumcondra, where I am very well known. I am the first American to have my artwork used on an Irish postage stamp. I recently attended the launch of the stamp as a VIP, and also attended several commemoration ceremonies in remembrance of the disaster. “The sinking of RMS Leinster off Dun Laoghaire is still the worst Irish maritime tragedy, despite being over shadowed by the more famous Titanic and Lusitania disasters.” The day after the stamp was launched, Brian had a solo exhibition in the Duke Street Gallery

about the RMS Leinster. “It did quite well, particularly in what is still a very bad market for contemporary art sales,” he said. “I will have two paintings exhibited in

the United Arts Club in an exhibition which opened on November 23 and I am currently working towards the Christmas Exhibition in the Duke Street Gallery, which will be opening

on December 6. “For 2019 I will continue as Artist-inResidence at the Ireland Institute for Cultural and Historical Studies, 27 Pearse Street, Dublin 2.”

THE GRANBY STORY Nearly a century ago there was a handful of traditional sausagemakers in Dublin proudly making by hand, mouth-watering sausages that had a distinct taste you could only find in the city. Library on the Glasnevin campus, the third floor of the Cregan Library on St Patrick’s campus and the Apple Loft on All Hallows campus. Earlier this year, DCU was recognised as the world’s first Autism-Friendly University by AsIAm, the autism advocacy charity, following an 18-month research project to better understand the challenges that may be facing autistic students. The research was carried out by researchers from AsIAm.ie and DCU’s School of Nursing and Human Sciences and the findings show that autistic students in third level often experience greater levels of difficulty settling in and adapting to university life than do their peers. Frequently cited issues were discomfort in noisy environments, difficulties in managing schedules, deadlines and workload, challenges with participating in group work and unease in new social situations and extracurricular activities. Loneliness and anxiety also featured strongly. The sensory pods will give students on the spectrum a designated space to manage their sensory environment if they are feeling overwhelmed, allowing them space to de-stress before returning to the busy pace of campus life. Speaking at the unveiling of the sensory pods, Frank O’Donoghue,

Pictured with Lions Club represenatives is Adam Harris, CEO ASIAM (extreme left), Frank O’Donoghue, District Governor, Lions Clubs Ireland (second from left) and Professor Brian McCraith, President DCU (fifth from left). District Governor, Lions Clubs Ireland, said funding of the project reflected the Lions core value of service to the community. “Lions Clubs from North Dublin and its environs recognised the work of DCU in becoming the world’s first AutismFriendly University and responded to an opportunity to provide funding for three sensory pods,” he said. “Ten Lions Clubs joined in the funding project, which is a fine example of clubs working together to achieve a worthwhile goal.”

Claire Bohan, Director of Student Support & Development at DCU, expressed gratitude to the Lions Clubs for their support. “The university’s campuses are vibrant spaces with lots of activity and interaction taking place, and this is so important to allow our students grow and flourish,” she added. “We need, however, to be able to offer the balance of a quieter space so that students can take some time out as needs be, to allow them cope better throughout those busy

days. “It was critically important to us from the outset of this project that we would be able to offer this space on all three campuses, so that students would have the facility close to hand irrespective of where their learning was taking place. “Through the generosity of the Lions Clubs Ireland, this is now a reality. We’re very much looking forward to hearing from the students about the impact these sensory pods have on their daily experience as a student in DCU.”

Barbara has that winning feline A PERFECT Northside pussycat has been announced as one of four regional winners in the Mackle Petfoods ‘Crown your Cat’ face of Cat Club 2019 competition. Finglas feline ‘Jillian’, owned by Barbara Mulreany, is now in with a chance of featuring on Cat Club packaging throughout Ireland next year. Jillian can now look forward to a year’s supply of Cat Club food from Mackle, a prize worth over €2,000, as a reward for being a regional finalist. Barbara from Jamestown Road explained how Jillian became part of her family. “We got Jillian as a fourmonth-old rescue,” she said. “She was so sickly as a kitten that there were fears she might lose both her eyes, but thankfully a kind and dedicated fosterer nursed her back to health

so we could adopt her, and she’s been with us ever since! “She fit right in, and definitely isn’t the shy kitten we brought home. She’s always chirping and meowing, but when you live with two dogs, a snake and a bearded dragon it’s important to make your voice heard! “Because we live in a busy, built up area she goes for walks on a harness and lead, and she’s learned from the dogs how to sit, beg and give the paw for treats. “She’s still a cat at heart though and in the winter she lies on top of the reptile enclosure, taking full advantage of the heat lamps!” Barbara came up with Jillian’s name after watching a Hollywood blockbuster movie. “She’s named after Jillian

Holtzmann, a character in the recent Ghostbusters film,” Barbara revealed. “It’s always very funny watching her strutting around like one of the dogs. For such a little cat, she’s a huge part of the family.” As part of the competition, Mackle Petfoods has also been making monthly donations of food to Co Down animal shelter, Almost Home, helping to take care of their rescue cats (and dogs) until they find a new home to be king or queen of! Laura Rafferty, Marketing Manager at Mackle Petfoods said entries for Crown your Cat came in from all over Ireland and competition to be the face of Cat Club was “fierrrrce”. “We’re down to our four finalists, Pedro from Crossgar, Co Down, April from West Belfast, Pantha

Mulhair came home with a gold and a bronze medal in the individual events. Overall the Irish team placed second, narrowly beaten by the defending champions Wales, with English opposition taking the bronze. “These swimmers train regularly each week, learning the skills to save lives from drowning,” said All-Ireland Team Manager, Sheila Mulhair. “Most of the competitors have been practising for many years now, and it was great to see such dedication paying off with so many medals. “The Leeds event brings together the very best lifesavers from Ireland, England and Scotland and Wales. “It was a great chance to showcase our talents, and tremendously satisfying to see that the standard of our swimmers is right up there with the best from other nations.”

How to care for older dogs get shorter. • If your dog hasn’t been neutered already, there may still be benefits in doing so at an older age. Please seek veterinary advice on this. • Your dog’s coat may change in condition. Daily grooming will be good for his coat and is a great opportunity for you to check him over for any new lumps or bumps that may indicate a problem. • Twice yearly veterinary checkups are essential for an ageing dog.

DOGS over the age of seven are considered to be senior by some, but this depends a lot on the breed. The ‘average’ life expectancy of a dog is 13 years, however smaller breeds tend to live longer than larger breeds. Old age brings many changes, some sudden, others gradual, and you will need to be on the lookout for those that signal problems. By preparing for their later years, you can really enhance the quality of life that your dog has that they deserve. FEEDING • As they become less active, older dogs can be prone to putting on weight but switching to a complete senior diet food that may be lower in protein or fat will help keep extra weight off. Speak to your local vet for advice about this. • If your dog suffers from neck or back pain raising the food and water bowl will help reduce discomfort. EXERCISE • Older dogs can become less energetic and sleep more, so out on walks, try to let your dog set the pace. Try to go for frequent, short walks instead of one long one. • Your dog may not want to go on long hikes as he gets older but it is

to help them navigate the stairs and accessing your car too. HEALTH • Older dogs may struggle with their sight and hearing. • Your dog’s eyes may appear cloudy, which could mean that he has old age changes or cataracts. Please seek veterinary advice on this. • Most dogs adjust to failing sight,

AS the economy approaches full employment, small businesses can struggle to attract and keep good staff for their growth, as they compete with larger companies and multinationals for talent. That’s according to the Fingal Local Enterprise Office, which has recognised that the needs of small businesses are changing with continued economic growth. Focusing on the importance of the need to attract good staff, some 80 small businesses from around Fingal gathered recently for a breakfast networking seminar, ‘Hiring and Holding onto the Best Staff for Your Business’, at Dublin Airport, to learn how they can best compete for the right staff for their business. An impressive panel of experts and distinguished entrepreneurs from various backgrounds gave delegates a series of helpful and practical tips on how a small business can make itself attractive as a place to work. The line-up included Bernard Brogan, Dublin footballer; Michael Dawson, managing director at One4All; Alan Hickey, Commercial Director, WeBringg; Ann McGee, managing director, MIAS Pharma; and Annmarie Browne, Talent Acquisition, Wachsman Ireland.

Chambers Ireland President Siobhan Kinsella, Dublin GAA star Bernard Brogan, Mayor of Fingal Cllr Anthony Lavin, Head of Enterprise in Fingal Oisin Geoghegan, Dr Mary Collins, Senior Executive Development Specialist and Fingal County Council chief executive Paul Reid at the event. PHOTO: ORLA MURRAY Mayor of Fingal Cllr Anthony Lavin emphasised the importance of meeting the changing skills needs for business. “It is positive that we are continuing to see growth across many different sectors and the availability of job opportunities in Fingal is to be welcomed,” he said. “However, this success brings new challenges for our employers as they compete for talent. It is very important for our small

businesses to position themselves so that they can compete for the skills mix that they need for their continued growth.” Fingal County Council chief executive Paul Reid highlighted the importance of this topic to businesses and public sector organisations. “As our economy moves closer to full employment, all employers are facing challenges in the recruitment and retention of

staff,” he said. “At Fingal County Council we are conscious of the need for businesses to fill their future staffing and skills needs. “To that end, a new Fingal Skills Strategy has been developed by Fingal County Council. We believe the adoption of a strategic approach to ensuring the provision of the right balance of skills is in the long term interests of our economy and our citizens.”

ITB graduate at Digital Hub AN EMERGING artist who graduated from the Institute of Technology Blanchardstown has had her innovative work featured as an exhibit in The Digital Hub. Riona Long’s RESONATE was on public display from November 9-17 in the hub, which is home to Ireland’s largest cluster of digital media, technology and internet businesses. Riona’s three-screen video installation delves into the experiences and influences of top electronic music producers and DJ’s. The video artist and motion graphics designer combined interviews, live footage and generated digital graphics to vividly illustrate the raw emotion and sense of community that electronic music has the power to induce in both listener and creator. Riona opened the exhibition with an artist talk during which she discussed the inspiration, motivation and ideas around the piece.

“The idea stemmed from wanting to express the emotional power of electronic music,” she said. “Visually, I wanted the installation to feel as immersive, emotive and diverse as this music itself is. The aim was to create something that went past the amazing technology and club culture and delve into the human aspect, to explore how producers and listeners alike are emotionally connected and influenced by sounds generated by machines. “The concept itself could not have been better supported by the incredible insights from the four Irish DJs and producers involved, who truly understand and related to where my heart was with this project. “I’m particularly grateful to The Digital Hub for the opportunity to share this with a wider audience and enthusiasm for the visual arts.”

Soccer pals team up for Ireland in South Africa A FIVE-A-SIDE football team from Dublin 15 has helped raise the profile of a local mental health organisation through their participation in a Five-A-Side World Cup in South Africa. The eight friends participate every year in the Gerry Whelan Memorial Football Tournament, which is a major fundraiser for Suicide Awareness Dublin 15. After winning this year’s competition they qualified for the All-Ireland Fivea-side Finals, which they also won to book their place as Ireland’s representatives at the recent World Cup Finals in South Africa. Prior to their departure to Cape Town earlier this month, the team visited Fingal County Council’s civic offices in Blanchardstown along with representatives of Suicide Awareness Dublin 15 where they met the Director of Housing and Community Margaret Geraghty as well as local councillors. “They participate every year in the Gerry Whelan Tournament, which is a major fund-raiser for the charity, and they are to be commended for using their qualification for the World Cup to raise

awareness of Suicide Awareness Dublin 15,” said Geraghty Sue Philips of Suicide Awareness Dublin 15 said the Gerry Whelan Tournament is a major source of fund-raising for the group. “It is all voluntary work on the ground,” she continued. “Everyone involved is voluntary, and mostly fundraising because we’re not funded by anybody. The fundraising that’s done, especially by the annual Gerry Whelan Memorial Day, is greatly needed as it pays towards counselling for people in the area.” Cllr Lorna Nolan (IND), who was a founder member of Suicide Awareness Dublin 15, explained the significance of the team going to Cape Town. “One of the key things that needs to be taken from the football tournament is that Suicide Awareness Dublin 15 is the only team going to the World Cup that is representing mental health and connecting the two will raise awareness of sport for mental health,” she said. “The work that the lads have done in reaching this tournament needs to be acknowledged.” The team is made up

Member of the Suicide Awareness Dublin 15 football team prior to their departure to South Africa. of manager Brendan Murphy, captain Eoghan Aspin, Mark Curtis, David Colgan, Darragh Perdisatt, Karl Walsh, Gavin Herbert, and Thomas O’Rourke. The Gerry Whelan Memorial Football Tournament was established to raise awareness of suicide after the tragic passing of Gerry Whelan in 2012.

Eoghan Apsin, who will captain the Suicide Awareness Dublin 15 team in South Africa, said: “Gerry was taken from us tragically a couple of years ago and ever since his close family and friends have organised this well run tournament up in Corduff in the Aquatic Centre. The aim of Suicide Awareness Dublin 15 is to

raise awareness for the charity.” Team manager Brendan Murphy said the team have being playing with one another for nearly 20 years, so know each other very well. “We’re a well-oiled unit,” he said. “Suicide Awareness Dublin 15 is a very important charity, we’ve

all probably been touched by suicide in one way or another. We think it’s a very important charity and we’re happy to represent it to bring about awareness and publicity for the great cause that it is.” The Five-a-side World Cup in Cape Town, South Africa is the largest amateur Five-a-side

football tournament in the world with 32 countries participating. Suicide Awareness Dublin 15 was set up in 2011 by a group of parents who had lost their sons to suicide and after extensive research settled on a model that they felt would be best for Dublin 15 which is prevention, intervention and post-prevention.

Mulhuddart at Draíocht A MAJOR exhibition reflecting the experience of people, groups, clubs and agencies in Mulhuddart has opened at Draíocht. Mulhuddart Satellite by Michael McLoughlin features a number of mappings of Mulhuddart through drawings, soundscape, audio recordings and radio broadcasts. McLoughlin is at the mid-point of a three-year residency at Draíocht and Mulhuddart Satellite and his longerterm relationship with Mulhuddart exemplifies Draíocht's local participation focus in its new 2018 to 2022 Strategy ‘Space for the Arts'. The exhibition highlights the community involvement central to the work of the Mulhuddart Priority Task Group and the recently published Mulhuddart Strategic Development and Implementation Plan. With this exhibition, Draíocht aims to present visions of Mulhuddart as presented by clubs, community networks and

groups of friends who help define this continually developing vibrant area. The role McLoughlin was asked to take on was that of ‘diviner’ (as coined by Sharon Murphy, Draíocht’s Curator in Residence), to spend time in Mulhuddart developing an understanding of the communities within it and in turn begin to suggest possible linkages between Draíocht, Mulhuddart residents and the participations that could build potential points of connection. The Mulhuddart Satellite exhibition presents a number of ‘mappings’ of Mulhuddart, each presented as an installation in the gallery, drawings or as public radio broadcasts. One piece, for instance, consists of a bank of wall mounted loudspeaker cones and was made from McLoughlin’s door to door calls to every home in Mulhuddart, in an attempt to record the names of every resident. In the Ground Floor Gallery an installation that takes the name of the exhibition ‘Mulhuddart Satellite’ features spatial recordings of conversations between community groups in Mulhuddart and is made from banks of speakers hanging from the gallery ceiling through which the audience negotiate their way through conversation, chat and stories. As part of the Mulhuddart Satellite exhibition program, there is a series of events, workshops and screenings that you can find out more about in the

Draíocht brochure, or on www.draiocht.ie. They include an exhibition in Riverdale Community College made in collaboration with students from the school, screenings of filmed work by young people from the area and we will be collaborating with 92.5 Phoenix FM to broadcast live from Draíocht’s artist studio. “Overall the exhibition explores place, belonging, friendships and the connections we have to the people around us,” said a spokesperson from Draíocht.

The team developed a platform for sellers to pay to advertise their unwanted goods and receive donations from ‘buyers.’ This offers a number of payment options, without involvement from ALONE, and ensures that all funds go to the charity. Anthony Rafferty, Director of EMEA Merchant Operations, PayPal spoke about the hackathon. “At PayPal, we are passionate about giving back to the wider community and supporting our teammates in their careers,” he said. “We want to help everyone reap the benefits of technology and that is what the hackathon is all about: it is a fun way to help charities harness digital and mobile funding for deserving causes, while providing PayPal

Hybrid version of Ireland’s favourite car is on the way FANS of Ireland’s favourite car, the legendary Corolla Saloon, will get an opportunity to see the brand-new hybrid version next month before its official arrival in Ireland. On December 13, in the Clayton Hotel in Dublin, the Corolla Saloon, along with the rest of the next generation Hybrid models, will be available to view. The car had its world premiere at the China Motorshow earlier this year, which marked the launch of the 12th generation Corolla Saloon. Globally renowned, the Corolla has sold more than 46 million units in over 150 countries since its introduction in 1966. And, for the first time ever, the Corolla Saloon is arriving as a self-charging hybrid and will feature

a 1.8-litre self-charging hybrid powertrain. There will also be a petrol variant, however, Toyota Ireland predicts that 90 per cent of the sales here in 2019 will be in hybrid. Building on the sleek and dynamic design that characterises the new Corolla model line-up, the new Saloon features the same wide and low stance inherent in the Toyota New Global Architecture (TNGA) platform. However, its own individuality within the Corolla family is reflected in its unique front and rear styling. To the front, Toyota's Under Priority Catamaran design philosophy has been further evolved. A more striking, two-step execution of the fender front corners flank the powerfully projecting lower grille, a common design theme of the new

Corolla family. The slim upper grille has a threedimensional design and connects with the top of the sharply designed headlamps, wrapping around the corners to emphasise the car’s low and firmly planted appearance. The rear design mimics the frontal execution through the dynamic shape of the bumper and the inversed trapezoid design of the trunk lid. The saloon-specific rear lamp clusters are connected through a chrome ornamentation, further highlighting the model’s wide stance. Furthermore, the unique signature of the front and rear LED light guides make the new Corolla Saloon instantly recognisable. Like the other Corolla models, the all-new Saloon features a spacious

and ergonomically excellent cabin hallmarked by its high sensory quality and advanced technology. Steve Tormey, Chief Executive of Toyota Ireland said: “The Toyota

Corolla Saloon has long been Ireland’s favourite car, and we’re delighted to launch a self-charging hybrid on the back of unprecedented demand. “Completely redesigned inside and out, we’re

confident that Irish customers, both current and new, will appreciate significantly more attractive, dynamic and modern design aesthetic of the new model.” The Corolla Saloon

self-charging hybrid prices start from €26,820 (excluding delivery and related charges) or from €208 monthly price on PCP. Further details are are available from all Toyota dealerships.

The Corolla Saloon, along with the rest of the next generation Hybrid models, will be available to view at the Clayton Hotel in Dublin.

NORTHSIDE PEOPLE WEST 28.11.18

Dress the home for Christmas NOW that December has almost arrived there’s no excuse for not embracing the Christmas spirit and with some early preparation you can ensure that this year your home is full of festive ambience throughout the holiday period. Of course Christmas is all about going over the top, but with some thought you can avoid tacky and get tasteful with your seasonal decorating. While living in Santa’s grotto for over a month might be some people’s idea of heaven you might feel more relaxed and your guests more welcome in a home with a stylish, classy look. Set a plan or a theme for your Christmas decorating. It doesn't cost anything to have a good

plan and when you’re working with budget ideas this is what pulls your ideas together. As with any interior design project the trick is getting the colours right. Red, white and silver might spring to mind for Christmas but you can transform you home into a cosy winter wonderland by harmonising your festive décor with existing colours. If your home is done in warm tones of gold and red, don't fight it by trying to use icy silvers and whites in holiday decor. Or, if you have a contemporary interior in black and silver, don't put up a rustic tree with twig garlands and blue cloth angels. Enhance your own interiors by choosing

decorations that play up existing colours, themes, and motifs. Different colours evoke different moods and in winter we often gravitate towards warmer tones of reds, warm yellows and golden colours. However, if your favourite decorations are snow themed you might want to use icy cool colours such as blue, lilac, silver, and white. Whenever possible, coordinate your holiday decorations in related spaces. The easiest way is to repeat colours - but vary their use from room to room. For example, in a scheme using red and gold use more red (with gold accents) in the living room and more gold (with red accents) in the

adjacent dining room. Coordination keeps decorations from getting boring while adding continuity throughout. Ribbons can be a great unifying element and is more classy than having tinsel everywhere. Use the same ribbon all around the home but buy it in contrasting colours. For example, you could use a gold ribbon with red stripes in one room and a red ribbon with gold stripes in another. Buy varying widths of the same ribbon so you can use narrower pieces around candlesticks and wider ones on wreaths. Christmas décor is all about accessorising. It’s the subtle touches that help create the magical festive ambiance and you don’t have to spend a

fortune getting it right. Take down your pictures and wrap them like a gift, then hang them back on the wall Drop a tealight candle in your cleaned out glass mayonnaise jars, tie a holiday ribbon around the neck and you have a beautiful candle with Christmas charm. If you are looking to do a captivating Toyland theme try searching out teddy bears and dolls at your local charity shops. Wash them in a pillowcase, put them in your dryer for 20 minutes and dress them up with ribbons and holiday fabrics. Group them under your tree, on the mantelpiece and on windowsills. For extra Christmas cuteness stack small squares of

cardboard together, wrap as a tiny present and tuck them under a teddy's arm. For many of us the main focus at Christmas is the dinner but the table is often overlooked when it comes to decor. You don’t have to rely on Santa napkins and Christmas crackers for a tasty atmosphere. Candles are a traditional must so use them to evoke a romantic seasonal glow while you enjoy your meal. Group various sizes and styles of white or cream coloured candles together and decorate with a simple wrap of gold ribbon. A Christmas garland makes a great table centrepiece. Use cuttings from garden hedgerows or evergreens to give your table a look of

extravagance and place in the centre of the table. You can emphasise your garland by adding small baubles, acorns or berries, or secure several candles along its length. Finally, remember Christmas only lasts a few weeks so it’s a good time to venture into new territory with your home décor. Now is your chance to be brave. Since the changes are temporary consider charging forward into a new style with bold colours and textures. Take a look at your furniture and drapery colours. What colours have you always wanted to try that will enhance your decor? But whatever you decide to do with your décor make sure you have fun. After all, it’s Christmas.

You don’t need to go full tilt to get a festive vibe going.
